Farmers' forums in Mandya announce boycott of meeting on Cauvery Aarti
The meeting was called to discuss the proposed Cauvery Aarti and amusement park projects at the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) dam.
The decision was made during a meeting on Tuesday at the Mandya city guest house, chaired by Sunanda Jayaram, organising secretary of the Mandya District Farmers' Welfare Committee. Leaders criticised the decision to hold discussions in Bengaluru, calling it "inappropriate" and insisting that the matter must be resolved in Mandya itself, as decided earlier.

"We stand firmly opposed to both the Cauvery Aarti and the amusement park projects, which pose a threat to the safety and sanctity of the dam," the leaders stated. They emphasised that a wide range of groups—including farmers, Dalit organisations, labour unions, women's rights groups, Kannada language advocates, and progressive forums—are united in their opposition.
The leaders recalled a prior meeting on June 6 in Mandya, chaired by the minister, where farmers and civil society members outlined the environmental and structural concerns linked to the proposed projects.
At that time, the minister assured attendees that their concerns would be conveyed to the chief minister and deputy chief minister and promised a follow-up based on their response. However, the farmers now express dissatisfaction with the lack of concrete action and view the new meeting in Bengaluru as a disregard for the previous assurances.
Prominent farmer leaders, including Kempu Gowda, Indavalu Chandrashekhar, Borayya, KS Sudhir Kumar, MB Nagannagowda of the Karunada Sevaka Organisation, Karave district president HD Jayaram, and Raita Sangha's Muddegowda, were present and reaffirmed their united stance against the projects.

"RSS Was Against Independence, Women's Voter Rights": Mallikarjun Kharge
Sasaram: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's effusive praise of the RSS, the BJP's parent body, in his Independence Day speech drew strong criticism from Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, who, on Sunday, claimed that the outfit had been "opposed" to freedom from the British. Kharge was delivering a speech at Sasaram in Bihar, where a 'Voters' Adhikar Yatra' was launched in the presence of Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, besides other senior alliance partners such as RJD president Lalu Prasad. "Modi claimed, from the ramparts of the Red Fort two days ago, that the RSS is the greatest NGO, has been working selflessly for the nation for nearly 100 years and deserves credit for Independence. Our freedom fighters must be turning in their graves," exclaimed the Congress president. "These RSS people should tell us what role did they play in the struggle for Independence. They were opposed to Independence. They were also opposed to Mahatma Gandhi and his followers, who gave up their academic careers and went to jail, fighting for freedom," Kharge said. "In those days, all that the RSS people did was to convince the British imperialists of their loyalty, begging for mercy to evade arrest. And Modi said what he said... I therefore say Modi is such a dangerous man. People must vote him out if they want to keep their right to vote safe," he said. Modi has been winning elections by stealing votes and while in power, he has been stealing the jobs meant for the youth and the maximum support price that farmers should be getting. All that his government seems to be interested in is changing the syllabi of schools and colleges, Kharge alleged. "They have also been harassing opposing parties through all possible means. Governors appointed by the Centre have become cronies of the Union government. Election Commission, too, has become their agent," he added. Kharge also claimed that the RSS and its sympathisers were opposed to universal adult suffrage, particularly women getting the right to vote, and they had "warned Jawaharlal Nehru that empowered females will vote him out". "But Nehru, with associates like BR Ambedkar, took a progressive stance. Women and deprived sections were given their due. People of Sasaram may recall that this is a Lok Sabha seat which Dalit icon Babu Jagjivan Ram represented several times on a Congress ticket," the AICC president said. "After Jagjivan Ram, the mantle was passed on to his daughter Meira Kumar, who also became the first woman to be elected as the Lok Sabha Speaker. I would request the people of Bihar to keep these things in mind. "The rights of voters here are under attack. The names of 65 lakh people have been deleted from the electoral rolls in the name of special intensive revision. Most of them are said to be Dalits, OBCs, poor migrant labourers, women and those belonging to the minority community," Kharge claimed.

Massive crowd welcomes Rahul Gandhi as 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' kicks off in Bihar
A mammoth crowd turned Sasaram into a sea of Tricolour on Sunday as Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi launched the 16-day, 1,300-km-long 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' across Bihar. Senior INDIA bloc leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav, and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, joined Rahul Gandhi at the historic launch that drew thousands of supporters lining the roads. Addressing the rally, Kharge called upon the people of Bihar to resist 'vote theft' allegedly being carried out by the BJP. 'This yatra is not just for winning an election, it is to save the Constitution, democracy and people's right to vote,' he said. Kharge accused the Election Commission of deleting 65 lakh voters from the rolls, largely from Dalit, Adivasi, minority, and other backward communities. Rahul Gandhi, in a sharp attack on the BJP and RSS, said the fight was to protect the Constitution from being 'wiped out' through electoral manipulation. 'Elections are being stolen in Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha across the country,' he said, citing Bihar's Special Intensive Revision of voter lists as 'a conspiracy to disenfranchise millions ahead of state polls.' He also pointed to Maharashtra, where, he claimed, the INDIA bloc swept the Lok Sabha elections but lost ground in the Assembly polls due to the sudden addition of one crore new voters, 'all favouring the BJP.' Gandhi further cited the Mahadevapura Assembly segment in Bengaluru Central, where Congress alleged over one lakh fake votes had swung the outcome in the BJP's favour. Reiterating his party's commitment to social justice, Gandhi said the Congress would conduct a nationwide caste census and push to remove the 50 per cent cap on reservations. He accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of making false promises on the issue and warned that the government would not act sincerely. The event was attended by INDIA bloc leaders including K.C. Venugopal, Bhupesh Baghel, Krishna Allavaru, Rajesh Ram, Shakeel Ahmad, Dipankar Bhattacharya, and Akhilesh Pratap Singh.
