Andy Pages delivers in 10th, Dodgers edge Padres 8-7 in rivals' first meeting of the season

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Andy Pages led off the 10th inning with an RBI double before scoring on Tommy Edman's single, and the Los Angeles Dodgers hung on to open their season series against the San Diego Padres with an 8-7 victory Monday night.
Will Smith homered and drove in three runs in the first of seven meetings in 11 days between the Southern California rivals. It's also a rematch of their NL Division Series last October, when the Dodgers rallied from a 2-1 deficit to eliminate San Diego with back-to-back shutouts in what proved to be their toughest playoff test on the way to a World Series championship.
After Pages delivered yet another clutch hit off Wandy Peralta (3-1), Edman brought him home with a fortunate bouncer that ricocheted off second base.
Jackson Merrill slugged a one-out RBI double in the 10th for San Diego, but Tanner Scott finished for his 12th save.
Kirby Yates (4-2) struck out two in a hitless ninth.
Tyler Wade had a three-run triple for the Padres, who have lost four of six.
Nick Pivetta yielded five runs and eight hits over just four innings in his second straight rough start for the Padres, while Dustin May gave up six hits and four walks over five innings for LA.
Shohei Ohtani led off with a 111-mph double and scored on a double by Freddie Freeman, who had three hits. Manny Machado had an RBI double for San Diego in the first.
Smith put the Dodgers up 5-3 in the third with a two-run homer, his sixth. Wade cleared the bases for the Padres later in the third with a two-out drive that Teoscar Hernandez couldn't catch while sliding in right field. Key moment

Ohtani pitched three simulated innings against live minor league batters at Petco Park Tuesday afternoon prior to the NL West tilt between his Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. But it's another encouraging sign for the Dodgers and their fans eager to see the two-way superstar pitch in Dodger blue for the first time. Tuesday's simulated innings were Ohtani's first on the mound since a May 31 session that went two innings. It was his third time overall throwing a live batting practice session and the first time he's exceeded two innings. Advertisement Ohtani's pitching work was previously limited to bullpen sessions that didn't involve batters. So when will Ohtani actually pitch? There were no immediate updates from the Dodgers after Ohtani's session on Tuesday. Roberts previously said after Ohtani's May 31 session that he'll need to reach "five or six" simulated innings before the Dodgers consider putting him into an actual baseball game. Ohtani signed with the Dodgers the following offseason and earned his third MVP after a historic 50-50 season at the plate. The Dodgers went on to a World Series championship, Ohtani's first. Ohtani's off to another sensational start at the plate that includes an NL-best 23 home runs through Monday. But his return to the mound is still unclear as his absence approaches the two-year mark. But, in 2025, they've been struggling immensely and at this rate, won't even make the playoffs. Torey Lovullo's ball club sits in third place in the NL West with a 32-34 record. To make matters worse, the Diamondbacks just lost Corbin Burnes to season-ending Tommy John surgery. There is the possibility Arizona will sell at the trade deadline if things don't improve, but starter Zac Gallen made it clear there's really no panic in the locker room. They remain optimistic about a turnaround. Via Sports Illustrated: 'We have a good vibe in the clubhouse. Everybody's fine with where we're at. We just know we need to play better,' Said Gallen. 'I think the only concern is that we're just not playing up to the standard that we expect of ourselves, really.' Gallen believes the Diamondbacks can make a late-season surge like they have before: 'We weren't over .500 until game 90-something last year… I think you guys have seen what this team can do from a win-loss standpoint from when we've backed ourselves in the hole. 'One of the big things that Torey talked about is winning the inch. So I think just being a little bit more consistent… I think a lot of teams thought 2023 was a fluke, and then 2024, I think teams realized that '23 wasn't a fluke,' Gallen said. 'I think we've just got to take it up a notch and, like I said, just be a little bit more consistent.' Gallen does make a valid point. They're only two games below .500 as we speak and didn't move above .500 until late in the 2024 campaign. There's no question the Diamondbacks have the talent to be a playoff team. Many of the same players remain from the Fall Classic run, and the reality is that many of them simply aren't living up to expectations. That includes Gallen, who has an ERA over five so far. Merrill Kelly is the only consistent starter right now outside of Burnes, who is done for the year. Gallen, Brandon Pfaadt, and Eduardo Rodriguez all need to be a whole lot better if this group is going to be competitive. On a more positive note, the Diamondbacks ended a three-game skid on Monday night as Josh Naylor hit a walk-off Grand Slam. Offense has been a strength — pitching just needs to catch up. They will face the Seattle Mariners again on Tuesday evening. Both teams lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2024 MLB Postseason and are trying to improve their lineup to make another run this time around. Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. is a player to keep an eye on ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline. There is quite literally no point in the White Sox keeping him on the roster, and a change of scenery is best for both sides. The Mets and Padres are two teams who could make a move for the outfielder, and according to ESPN, are urged to do so. Robert Jr. is not having a good season with the White Sox, but he has the potential to be a very good player. Injuries have taken over his career, and he has yet to really play a full season in the majors. In 2023, he played 145 games, which is the most in his career by a ton. The only other time he played at least 100 games was last season in their historically terrible campaign. This year, Robert Jr. is batting just .177 with five home runs and 24 RBIs. His Slugging Percentage is just .281, and he has a WAR of -0.1. He desperately needs a change of scenery. The Cuba native could be a great fit for the Padres. Bradford Doolittle of ESPN broke it down: 'The Padres have rolled out a motley collection of non-producers in left field, which has yielded them an overall slash line of .200/.248/.286 with four homers at the position. Upgrade opportunity! Luis Robert Jr. might work if the Padres are convinced he has nowhere to go but up, as his .546 OPS is barely above that of the Padres' left fielders. However, A.J. Preller handles it, San Diego can't leave this hole unfilled.' As for the Mets, they need a center fielder. Doolittle thinks Robert Jr. could be a good fit for them, and he would play on the East Coast closer to home. 'Center is an obvious position of need for New York, which seems like a great landing spot for Luis Robert Jr.' It's unclear if the White Sox are motivated to want to move him right now, so closer to the deadline makes more sense. For now, the Padres aim to even the series against the Dodgers on Tuesday, and the Mets begin a series against the Washington Nationals.
