SINGAPORE, May 25 (Bernama) -- The conclusion of the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) upgrade negotiations on Sunday demonstrates the bloc's commitment to building a more seamless and resilient economic region, said Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong.
Gan, who also serves as Minister for Trade and Industry, said it also reflects ASEAN's commitment to preserving a rules-based trading environment to better support business operations in the region amidst an uncertain global economic climate.
'Singapore was pleased to Chair and work with our ASEAN partners to successfully conclude the ATIGA Upgrade negotiations,' he said in a Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) statement on Sunday.
The negotiations were concluded at the 25th ASEAN Economic Community Council (AECC) Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, which Gan attended.
As the next step, ASEAN Member States have agreed to sign the upgraded ATIGA at the 47th ASEAN Summit in October 2025.
Businesses stand to benefit from an improved regional ecosystem for the flow of goods within ASEAN when the upgraded ATIGA comes into force, according to MTI.
Meanwhile, Gan said that Singapore will continue to work with ASEAN and global partners to secure long-term growth, competitiveness, and shared prosperity, as the bloc deepens region-to-region cooperation and harnesses opportunities in digitalisation and sustainability.
'ASEAN's focus on digitalisation, sustainability and expanding global cooperation ensures our region remains open, connected, and future-ready,' he added.

‘No loyalty, no problem': Zahid says Tengku Zafrul's exit won't spark tensions in Umno
Published on: Tuesday, June 03, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 03, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi speaks at a press conference after chairing a pre-meeting with the Malaysian delegation during his four-day working visit to the United Kingdom, which began yesterday. — Bernama pic LONDON: The decision by the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz to quit Umno has not disrupted or raised tension within the party, according to Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Deputy Prime Minister, who is also the Umno President, stated that most grassroots members view Tengku Zafrul's resignation from the party as appropriate given his lack of loyalty to Umno. 'I don't see any indication of 'temperature rising' within Umno. It's better for him to leave if there is no loyalty to the party. Don't disturb him because he is currently performing the Hajj, hopefully, peace will surround his mind,' he said. He made these remarks during a press conference after chairing a pre-meeting with the Malaysian delegation in conjunction with his four-day working visit to the United Kingdom, which began yesterday. Last Friday, Tengku Zafrul announced via a Facebook post that he had submitted his resignation from Umno to join PKR. Meanwhile, addressing the question of a cabinet reshuffle if Tengku Zafrul's position as Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry needs to be replaced, Ahmad Zahid said discussions on the matter should be held internally within the Unity Government. 'The absolute right to appoint ministers rests with the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim), and in this matter, it is better for us to hold internal discussions to avoid various interpretations,' he said. Earlier, Ahmad Zahid was reported to have said that Umno wants its quota of seven full ministers in the Federal Cabinet to be restored to the party following Tengku Zafrul's action. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? [UPDATED] Khaled urges mutual respect in unity government
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said there should be mutual respect among parties in the unity government, following Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz's decision to leave Umno and express interest in joining PKR. Speaking after officiating the Malaysian Skills Diploma, Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL) Programme and Perhebat Certificate award ceremony today, Khaled said that while the party may not stop anyone from quitting, such actions may reflect their character. "However, whatever the case, the current government was formed from a coalition of parties that agreed to establish a unity government, and as such, there should be mutual respect among the parties," he said. He also confirmed that, as far as he was aware, there had been no inter-party discussions about Tengku Zafrul's decision. When asked if Tengku Zafrul might face disciplinary actions upon returning from the Haj, Khaled pointed out that "if he has already left the party, how can disciplinary action be taken against him?" Regarding the Investment, Trade and Industry ministerial position currently held by Tengku Zafrul, Khaled made it clear that such matters are to be discussed within the party and not through the media. On Sunday, Umno information chief Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the party's Legal Bureau has been tasked with reviewing the implications of the Anti-Party Hopping Act, including Tengku Zafrul's status as a senator, to ensure that all subsequent actions are in line with the law. On Saturday, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it was unethical for any party within the unity government to accept membership applications from former leaders or members of its allies. The deputy prime minister, who is also Barisan Nasional chairman, said he was not surprised by Tengku Zafrul's announcement to quit Umno and join PKR, as they had discussed the matter during a parliamentary session three months ago. Meanwhile, Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has also urged party members and supporters to remain calm, focused, and united following Tengku Zafrul's decision to leave the party for PKR.

MIDA: Malaysia Nets RM4.68 Billion In Potential Investments From Japan At Osaka Expo
Malaysia made a strong economic showing at Expo 2025 Osaka as the nation secured RM4.68 billion in potential investments from Japan, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) said. This figure represents a major milestone, accounting for 56.9% of the RM7.39 billion in total investments attracted under Malaysia's Expo participation. The achievement was announced during the opening ceremony of the Malaysia Pavilion, officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and attended by Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Liew Chin Tong. 'Expo 2025 Osaka is the platform for Malaysia to demonstrate its value as a future-ready, innovation-driven and sustainability-conscious partner. 'The investments secured reflect global confidence in Malaysia's green economy and digital transformation agenda,' Liew said. The RM4.68 billion investment milestone follows a targeted investment mission across Kyoto, Kobe, Osaka and Tokyo from April 12-19, 2025, led by MIDA Deputy Chief Executive Officer Sivasuriyamoorthy Sundara Raja. The mission featured high-level meetings with major Japanese corporations in advanced manufacturing, clean energy and technology-driven sectors. MIDA Chief Executive Officer Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim said the investment value underscores Malaysia's strong investment fundamentals and the strategic trust Japanese partners place in Malaysia. 'MIDA will continue to anchor high-quality investments that align with our national priorities,' Sikh Shamsul added. Malaysia is targeting RM13 billion in investment and trade outcomes from the Expo, focusing on seven priority sectors: Sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, smart living, green manufacturing, industrial reform, environmental management and the halal industry.
