Mohit Suri opens up on Awarapan's box office failure and fan calls for re-release

India Today10-07-2025
In the age of film re-releases, fans of Emraan Hashmi are rallying on social media to demand a theatrical re-release of 'Awarapan' (2007). Directed by Mohit Suri and starring Emraan Hashmi and Shriya Saran, the film failed to make a mark at the box office upon release, despite gaining a cult following over the years -especially for its music, which continues to resonate with fans.In an exclusive conversation with India Today, director Mohit Suri reflected on the possibility of re-releasing 'Awarapan' and the emotions tied to its initial reception.'It didn't do well when it released, and I was really upset because I genuinely felt the film was good. So I felt like maybe my perspective was off,' Suri recalled. 'I remember my friend Tanuj Garg, a distributor at the time, calling me and saying the film had too much violence. But he and many others still love the music and songs of 'Awarapan'."Suri also shared a personal anecdote involving filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. "At that time, when the film didn't do well, Mr Bhatt called me over. He poured me a drink and told me how when he did 'Saransh' it was an average hit and didn't make money either. He said, 'Son, I'm telling you that you know your job. And, this film will never go away.''He added, "The fact that they are making a sequel of a film today which at that time didn't do well at the box office, I don't know too many film directors who've had that opportunity."advertisementMohit Suri is currently gearing up for the release of 'Saiyaara', which marks the debut of Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda. The film hits theatres on July 18.- EndsYou May Also Like

Pallavi Joshi Says Halt On The Bengal Files Trailer Launch In Kolkata Was An "Assault On Democracy"

Days after the trailer launch of The Bengal Files in Kolkata was put on hold by the local police, actor Pallavi Joshi on Monday criticised the West Bengal administration for stopping the event in the capital city last week. On August 16, 2025, filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri claimed the trailer launch of The Bengal Files was stopped at a five-star hotel in Kolkata. Kolkata Police sources later told NDTV that the director had not sought any administrative permission for public view of the trailer of his upcoming film. Visuals of policemen entering the venue had gone viral on social media. Pallavi Joshi, who stars in her husband Vivek Agnihotri's movie The Bengal Files, described the action by the state government as "unconstitutional". "Since the story is rooted in Bengal, we felt it would be most appropriate to launch the trailer in Bengal in August, but the government silenced us. We feel it is an act which is not only arbitrary but also unconstitutional," the actor said during the trailer launch event of The Bengal Files in New Delhi on Monday. "What happened that day was not merely an assault on the film, but an assault on democracy itself. The voices of people and the voice of Bharat were suppressed and censored. The absence of dignity and the absence of the value of human life are the themes of our film. The government proved our theme is correct," she added, as quoted by India Today. Pallavi Joshi said the launch event of The Bengal Files was halted on "laughable grounds". "They said we didn't have municipal permission... The videos are about the chaos that followed. Many women journalists got hurt. I was also very uncomfortable. Thanks to Vivek, we managed to get out. We feel the police and the government are forgetting their basic duty, that is protecting its citizens, especially women, and their modesty. That should have been the sole priority of women," the actor said. Vivek Agnihotri likened stopping the trailer launch of a CBFC-approved movie like The Bengal Files to "anarchy, dictatorship". "Police had come so that we could not show the movie, the police are being used in Bengal because of some people's political ambitions. The film talks about demography change, and they don't want to show it because the state itself empowers demography change. I cannot be silenced," he told reporters on Saturday. The ruling Trinamool Congress's spokesperson said Vivek Agnihotri's allegations were baseless. The Bengal Files, based on the 1946 Great Calcutta killings, also stars Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, and Saswata Chatterjee. The film is set to release on September 5, 2025.

After Saiyaara, Ahaan Panday's Barbaad gets a Kishore Kumar AI version; divided netizens say ‘Let the OG be OG'

Every Friday a new movie is released in theatres. While some are forgotten by the next week, a few leave an indelible mark on the audiences. In this day and age, it was quite refreshing to see how real the craze for Mohit Suri's Saiyaara was. Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda's adorable chemistry, intense performances and the heartwrenching story made sure that their debut film becomes a milestone in Bollywood's history. Meanwhile the music touched millions of hearts! The title track of Saiyaara even got an AI version in late legend Kishore Kumar's voice. Well, another song from the album has now been recreated using AI. Ahaan Panday-Aneet Padda's Saiyaara song Barbaad and the new AI track We are talking about the soulful love song Barbaad, originally helmed by Jubin Nautiyal, which plays when Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda realise that they are falling in love. The AI version of Barbaad in Kishore Kumar's voice has been created by musicians RJ Krishna and Anshuman Sharma, who were also behind Saiyaara's recreated title track. This time, the duo have used Ahaan and Aneet's Barbaad in the backdrop of Amitabh Bachchan and Smita Patil's song Jane Kaise Kab Kahan from the 1982 film Shakti. Well, much like the previous remixed version, Barbaad's AI version in KK's voice has left the internet divided. Some fans were blown away! For instance, a social media user shared, 'Therapy is expensive, so I listen to "Barbaad" in Kishore Kumar's voice!!,' whereas a comment read, 'Why is this better than the original!!!! Love it.' An internet user called it, 'Another Banger ✨,' whereas another netizen stated, '👏👏👏👏👏 ye saiyara k gaane old vibes mein hi smjh aye mujhe toh.. isse phle toh dhyan hi ni gya lyrics pe😍.' However, others seem to have had enough of the AI versions, and believe these recreations are taking away from the originals. For instance, a netizen claimed, 'I'm sorry but the ai version is not better than the original. Please stop making everything using ai. Let the og be og,' whereas another internet user opined, 'Honestly, recreating today's songs in old singers' voices might be fun for a moment, but it takes away the originality. Every era has its own magic — and what's new deserves to be celebrated in its own fresh sound. Every generation creates its own sound. Why force old voices on new songs when the beauty lies in originality?' A comment read, 'I really think this isn't ok... Making every viral song in Kishore Kumar's voice using AI,' whereas a netizen shared, 'I don't know why but I hate these type of AI songs 😤.' What are your thoughts on the recreated versions of songs from Saiyaara's soulful album?
