The deal signed between the provincial company and an Italian yacht management company could help unlock billions of rand in the province's ocean economy while positioning KwaZulu-Natal as an ideal location for yacht building.
This is according to the provincial government which said KZN Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli had signed a landmark agreement with Italian marine industry leader Navigo International.
The province has described this as a new era for KZN's ocean economy. It said the partnership marks a bold step in unlocking the province's R100 billion maritime potential, leveraging its 820 km coastline, world-class ports, and emerging marine manufacturing sector.
The highlights of the agreement include: Superyacht Manufacturing Hub : KZN to co-develop and export luxury vessels in partnership with NAVIGO, competing with global players like Italy and France.

Premier Ntuli declared that the agreement is about launching KZN into the global superyacht industry. 'We are turning our ocean into jobs, innovation, and sustainable growth,' he stated.
The premier's office said the province has the potential to be a "giant" in the ocean economy. It noted that KZN is strategically located as a gateway to the Indian Ocean trade routes, with existing infrastructure such as Dube TradePort, Richards Bay IDZ, and major port expansions.

'We are building on the R85.5 billion pledged at the KZN Investment Conference. We are not just building boats — we are building a new economy. From uMlazi to uMhlanga, this sector will create intergenerational wealth while preserving our coastal heritage,' he added.
Musa Zondi, the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, said Navigo's interest in KZN marked a significant endorsement of the province's strategic vision.
'What we envision together is not just economic growth, but growth with a purpose, growth that upskills young people, growth that partners with local business. Growth that places KwaZulu-Natal on a global map as a yachting and refit destination.'
Commenting on the agreement, Dr Sabelo Gwala, Special Advisor to the Premier, said the agreement is a fulfilment of a long-held ambition.
'Today marks a decisive shift from vision to reality in KwaZulu-Natal's blue economy. For too long, the potential of our oceans has been spoken about in conferences and policy documents — but Premier Ntuli is transforming rhetoric into tangible action. This partnership with Navigo International is the foundation of a new industrial ecosystem that will redefine our coastline.'

ECB expected to hold rates as Trump tariff uncertainty lingers
GERMANY - The European Central Bank is set to hold interest rates for the first time in almost a year when policymakers meet this week, despite concerns over the potential impact of higher US tariffs on the eurozone economy. The 26 members of the ECB's governing council will meet just over a week before an August 1 deadline set by US President Donald Trump for the imposition of his government's punitive tariffs. Trump has threatened to triple a basic tariff on imports from the EU to 30 percent if Brussels does not cut a deal by the end of the month, casting uncertainty over the future of transatlantic trade. But the ECB was expected to hold tight on rates instead of preempting the outcome of negotiations, pausing a series of cuts that goes back to September. The central bank has reduced its benchmark rate a total of eight times since June last year and at each of its last seven meetings, bringing it down to two percent. The rapid reduction in rates has come as eurozone inflation has fallen back towards the ECB's two-percent target from the double-digit highs seen in 2022. In June, eurozone inflation sat exactly on the ECB's target and was forecast by officials at the central bank to even out at two percent for the year. - 'More clarity' - The ECB would "almost certainly leave interest rates unchanged" at the conclusion of its monetary policy meeting on Thursday, analysts from Italian bank UniCredit said in a note. "The central bank will now want to have more clarity on the trade outlook before it considers adjusting its policy further," they said. Despite the murky outlook, the ECB was in a "good place" to deal with what comes next, executive board member Isabel Schnabel told financial news service Econostream Media this month. And with the euro area economy showing some signs of life despite Trump's threats on tariffs, "the bar for another rate cut is very high", she said. Euro area factory output has grown four months in a row and the bloc's manufacturing PMI - a survey-based measure of manufacturer's overall health - rose in June to its highest level since August 2022. The improving picture painted by recent indicators could, however, be shattered were Trump to follow through with additional tariffs on top of steep existing levies on auto manufacturers, steel and aluminium. - Euro strength - The sabre-rattling from the Oval Office over trade - and Trump's repeated attacks on the US Federal Reserve's independence - have otherwise had the impact of weakening the dollar against the euro. Were the euro to rise much further it would make matters "much more complicated", ECB Vice President Luis de Guindos told Bloomberg TV this month. A stronger single currency brought with it the risk of undershooting the ECB's inflation target by making imports cheaper and cooling the economy, while making European exports more expensive. Already, the ECB's forecasts published last month predict inflation to fall to 1.6 percent in 2026, before recovering to two percent the following year. A strong euro meant rate cuts later in the year were a matter of "when and by how much and not if", ING bank analyst Carsten Brzeski said. The question would get "more attention" at forthcoming ECB gatherings, Brzeski said, but the uncertainty over US tariffs argued in favour a "wait-and-see approach". Trump had upped the threatened level of tariffs on EU exports to the United States since the ECB's last meeting but where they would land after August 1 was uncertain. With the EU locked in talks with Washington to avoid higher tariffs, the necessary "clarity is unlikely to emerge by next Thursday", UniCredit analysts said. A pause was likely before another cut later in the year, perhaps already in September, the first meeting after the summer, they said.

Over 5 million taxpayers auto-assessed as 2025 filing season gets underway
As the 2025 filing season gets underway in the new week, SARS has announced that 5.8 million taxpayers received auto assessments, which is up from last year's 5 million. 'Importantly, 99.6% of auto assessments issued to date have remained unchanged by taxpayers. Equally impressive is that R10.6b in refunds due to taxpayers have already been paid within 72 hours,' SARS said. The successful completion of the Auto Assessment period ran from July 7 to 20, 2025. It will be followed by the tax filing period via eFiling and the SARS MobiApp for individual taxpayers from Monday, July 21 – October 20, 2025. Provisional taxpayers can also file from July 21, 2025 – January 19, 2026. With auto assessment, SARS uses data sourced from third-party data providers to assess taxpayers. This is in keeping with the revenue service's aspiration to 'make tax just happen,' which enables taxpayers to not to do anything when they are issued an auto assessment. For the few taxpayers that may need to update their tax returns with changes in case of outstanding information, which SARS does not have, this can be done via eFiling or the SARS Mobi App. SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter expressed his satisfaction with the auto assessment as it has been a game changer in making tax easy for taxpayers to comply. 'SARS is working hard to give taxpayers the best service. Ultimately, our aim is to make the best service to be no service at all. As we start with Filing Season for those not auto assessed, from July 21, I encourage taxpayers rather to use our digital channels than come queue at our service centres.' He noted that the improvement of SARS's digital platforms is saving taxpayers' time and eliminating the need to travel to SARS service centres. 'For the majority of those who submit a return online, an assessment outcome is issued in under five seconds if all is in order. This world class service is done whilst managing the risk of impermissible or fraudulent refunds with sophisticated machine learning and AI models. 'To avoid penalties, taxpayers must submit accurate information promptly. Taxpayers are using SARS's digital channels successfully. There is no need to visit SARS service centres. If you must, book an appointment first to avoid long queues. 'Taxpayers who owe SARS are urged to make payments as soon as possible or make payment arrangements. Only refunds more than R100 due to taxpayers will be automatically paid into their bank accounts within 72 hours once the assessment is completed,' the revenue service said. Call for vigilance SARS urged taxpayers to remain extremely vigilant and keep their details confidential. 'There have been many attempts by scammers to defraud taxpayers. Taxpayers are reminded that SARS will never ask taxpayers to use any link to engage with it. Taxpayers must protect their eFiling login details and use only registered tax practitioners,' SARS said. Information on the latest scams can be found on the SARS website: To report or request information on phishing, taxpayers can send an email to [email protected]. For smooth Filing Season 2025, taxpayers are urged to use the following communication channels with SARS: SARS Website: visit and click on the 'Individuals' tab. SARS Online Query System (SOQS): SARS WhatsApp: send 'Hi' or 'Hello' to 0800 117 277. AI Virtual Assistant: available 24/7 on the SARS website to answer queries. UCV condemns PRASA fare increases as a direct attack on vulnerable communities
The United Commuters' Voice (UCV) has strongly condemned the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) for its newly announced fare increases, calling them 'a direct attack on the vulnerable community.' PRASA announced the increases on July 16, with implementation set for August 1. Ticket prices will rise by up to R2.50 for single trips and over R100 for monthly tickets in some zones. UCV said the increases are unaffordable and disproportionately affect the poorest members of society who rely on trains as their primary mode of transport. 'These increases represent a severe financial burden on the poorest members of society, undermining the very constitutional mandate that PRASA was established to uphold,' said UCV in a statement.
