Ample evidence against SAD leader lodged in Nabha jail, says Punjab CM

Hindustan Times2 days ago
Chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday said that ample evidence had been found against the former Akali minister in Nabha jail, arrested on drug trafficking charges. Without naming Bikram Singh Majithia, the CM, who was addressing members of newly formed defence committees in an event in Ludhiana, said the evidence would be presented in court, and the matter would be taken to a logical end. Targeting several senior leaders of the Congress and the BJP for 'speaking in favour of the SAD leader', Mann said it exposed the 'collusion' between the Opposition parties. 'They've covered up each other's wrongdoings when they were in power. They should make it clear whether they are with the drug traffickers or against them,' said the chief minister.
Blaming the Opposition for the drug issue, Mann said had the previous governments restrained drug traffickers, the current government wouldn't have been compelled to conduct anti-drug campaigns. 'Governments usually form development committees, not defence committees,' he said.
According to Mann, the state government, which launched the anti-drug campaign on February 4 this year, had achieved success in breaking the backbone of the drug supply chain. 'To keep villages and cities free of drugs, the government has formed defence committees which will act as generals in this war against drugs,' he said.
Each village or ward defence committee will be formed with four core members, including village sarpanch or ward councillor, a representative from the anti-drug campaign, the BDPO or his/her representative and the SHO or his/her representative. He said these committees will include 10 to 20 members depending on the population of an area. Each committee will be notified by the local SDM and committee members will be issued government identity cards. Villages and wards will have 24X7 surveillance to ensure no trafficker dares to operate, he highlighted.
The CM envisioned that committee members would also assist in drug rehabilitation efforts and help reintegrate former addicts into society. He said any village or ward that achieves 100% drug-free status would receive formal recognition and certificates of appreciation from the government. Mann said these committees would raise awareness through street plays and door-to-door campaigns, adding that schools would also conduct awareness programmes for children.
He noted that more than 10,000 village-level meetings have already been held, and many panchayats have passed resolutions to declare their villages drug-free.
In another announcement, he said that after the monsoon season ends, the government would begin extensive repair work on 20,000 km of link roads across the state, describing them as Punjab's economic lifelines.
Health and family welfare minister Dr Balbir Singh, housing and urban development minister Hardeep Singh Mundian, chief secretary KAP Sinha, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav and others were present.

Sanjay Singh: ‘Support INDIA bloc only on SIR as it is a bid to kill democracy in India'

While the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has walked out of the INDIA bloc, the party's national general secretary and MP Sandeep Pathak participated in the Opposition alliance's joint press conference in Delhi Wednesday to sharpen their demand for a discussion in Parliament on the Election Commission (EC)'s ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar. AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh spoke to The Indian Express on the party's position on the SIR exercise and its ties with the INDIA bloc, among other issues. Excerpts: Sanjay Singh: We have clarified repeatedly that the AAP is not a part of the INDIA bloc and our position remains the same. We only offered support to the Opposition over the SIR, which is an attempt to kill democracy in India. Sanjay Singh: Only time will tell. If there are similar issues of national importance which emerge in the future, we will take a call at the time over extending support to the Opposition. Sanjay Singh: The SIR is a matter of grave importance. More than 65 lakh voters have been deleted from Bihar's electoral rolls… It is an attempt to stifle the democratic set-up of the country. Why should the Opposition step back from its duty of calling for a discussion on it? Sanjay Singh: We will take it to the people. There is no other way. We will tell the people how their votes are being robbed by a particular party and make them aware of the BJP's intent as well as the consequences of lakhs of voters being disenfranchised. Sanjay Singh: The SIR will certainly be a core issue around which the party's Bihar campaign will revolve just like how we have made quality of education a part of our campaign in Uttar Pradesh. Both the campaigns are on the right track and are doing well.

Punjab BJP march against land-pooling from August 17

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Punjab unit on Thursday announced a state-wide yatra titled 'Save Land, Save Farmers', from August 17 to September 5. This yatra, the Punjab BJP said will go village-to-village, creating awareness among farmers against this scheme and mobilising them The yatra will kick off on August 17 from Patiala, and pass through villages in Malwa, Majha, and Doaba regions before culminating in Pathankot on September 5. This announcement was made by BJP's state vice president, Kewal Singh Dhillon, during a press conference held at the party's Punjab headquarters. He was accompanied by state general secretaries Anil Sareen, Rakesh Rathore, Dayal Singh Sodhi and party spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal. Dhillon stated that during this yatra, the Punjab BJP will go village-to-village, creating awareness among farmers against this scheme and mobilising them. The BJP leaders condemned the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government. 'Through the land pooling scheme, the government seeks to hand over farmers' land to mafias, which is completely unacceptable,' Sareen said. HC has raised valid questions against land-pooling: Bajwa Chandigarh The leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Punjab assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, said that the high court has rightly asked for the social and environmental impact assessments for implementing the land pooling policy. 'This scheme was an outright violation of the Land Acquisition Act. This policy's purpose was to circumvent social and environmental impact assessments, enabling the government to seize farmers' land and threaten the very foundation of our agrarian economy,' Bajwa said. Bajwa said that the high court recognised the serious challenges faced not only by farmers but also by landless labourers who rely on agricultural work, emphasising that the government had provided no rehabilitation plans for them.

Karnataka high court stays legal action against minister

Bengaluru: The Karnataka high court has temporarily halted the legal proceedings initiated against state energy minister KJ George, in connection with the allegations surrounding the state's smart meter tender process. The Karnataka high court has temporarily halted the legal proceedings initiated against state energy minister KJ George in connection with the the state's smart meter tender process. (HT PHOTO) The interim stay was ordered by Justice MI Arun, who was hearing George's plea challenging the maintainability of a case filed in the Special Court designated to handle criminal matters involving lawmakers. The case stems from a private complaint filed by BJP leaders CN Ashwath Narayan, SR Vishwanath and Dheeraj Muniraj. Earlier, on July 23, the Special Court had ordered the registration of a private complaint against George, former BESCOM managing director Mahantesh Bilgi and engineer Ramesh HJ. The complaint alleges irregularities in the awarding of the smart meter contract, alleging that the minister colluded with BESCOM officials to favour a particular company— Rajashree Electricals—by diluting eligibility norms and undervaluing the contract. The complaint pertains to a tender floated by BESCOM on September 26, 2024, for smart meter services. The BJP leaders allege that the contract was awarded to Rajashree Electricals, a company described in the petition as a shell entity based in Davangere, in violation of the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (KTPP) Act, 2000, and the rules of the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC). The petitioners claim that instead of issuing separate tenders for each power supply company across regions, the entire contract was routed through BESCOM, bypassing norms meant to ensure competition and transparency. Appearing for George, senior advocate Shathabish Shivanna contended that the prosecution lacked mandatory sanction. 'Our client is a sitting legislator. Under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, prior sanction from the competent authority is required to prosecute a public servant. In this case, no such sanction was obtained before initiating proceedings. This makes the entire process legally untenable,' he argued. The court took cognisance of the argument and stayed proceedings before the Special Court. George's legal team further asserted that the complaint lacked substance and was politically driven. 'A plain reading of the allegations shows that our client had no direct or indirect role. The complaint is vague, politically motivated, and part of a larger pattern of harassment by BJP legislators,' they said. Advocates Samruddh Sura Hegde and Leela P appeared for the BESCOM officers named in the case. The interim stay drew sharp reactions from politicians on both sides of the political spectrum. 'It is an open secret that minister KJ George through BESCOM looted public money on the pretext of smart meters,' said BJP state media convener K Karunakar. 'A smart meter costs ₹10,000 here while same meter cost is just ₹2,000 in neighbouring states. This is a clear case of corruption and the court will punish him,' he added. The Congress rejected the allegations, with KPCC general secretary Manjunath Bhandari saying, 'This is not a scam. The government is doing all tender proceedings transparently and all the suppliers of meters were allowed to participate in the process.' He added, 'KJ George will come out clean after the probe.'
