Expat Villa fan in Paris excited for the team's match in her current home city
A British expat living in France says she will do whatever she can to try to watch her favourite football team play up close after years of supporting them from afar. Liz Medcraft used to be an Aston Villa season ticket holder after falling in love with the team when she was 12, before moving to Paris."I became fan when I watched David Platt score the last minute, extra time goal against Belgium in the 1990 World Cup", the former Stourbridge resident said. Aston Villa will play Paris St-Germain in the Champions League quarter-final with the first leg in Paris on 9 April.
"I wasn't born and bred a Villa fan", she told BBC Radio WM. But after watching Platt score, she said she was adamant to go and watch him play in real life. "I was 12 at the time. I thought I love him. I want to go see him and then my dad took me to Villa Park the following season," Ms Medcraft said."I saw two games that season and the second game I saw he scored a hat trick against Tottenham and I was hooked."After moving to Paris, Ms Medcraft said she was resigned to watching her team play on French TV on Saturday afternoons. "I was a season ticket holder until I moved to France. I followed them home and away - and now I follow them from far away", she added. But with Villa continuing their Champions League exploits with a trip to her current home city, Ms Medcraft said the excitement was starting to build. "Its going to be quite complicated but I'm going to try and get tickets," she said."It's quite exciting - I've started to get messages from all my French friends."Some are season ticket holders so I'm going to try to wrangle it!"

Gareth Bale part of group seeking Plymouth takeover
The Telegraph were first to report that the 35-year-old former Real Madrid and Wales forward was part of the group seeking to buy Argyle. The PA news agency understands the group featuring Bale has registered an interest in buying Argyle, but the process is at a very early stage. Plymouth will start next season in League One (Nick Potts/PA) Should the deal go through, Bale would be the latest big sporting name to be associated with an EFL club. Bale's former Real team-mate Luka Modric became an investor and co-owner in Championship side Swansea in April, while ex-NFL quarterback Tom Brady has a minority stake in Birmingham. Plymouth declined to comment. Bale retired from football in January 2023 at the age of 33. He won five Champions League titles with Real and is the men's all-time record goalscorer for Wales with 41 in 111 caps. Bale featured for Wales at the 2022 World Cup – their first appearance at the global finals since 1958 – and at the Euros in 2016 and 2020.

Tonight's rugby news as rugby league star joins Wales coaching team and powerhouse tipped for breakthrough
Tonight's rugby news as rugby league star joins Wales coaching team and powerhouse tipped for breakthrough The latest headlines from Wales and around the world Ben Flower has joined the Wales Women's coaching team (Image: Huw Evans Picture Agency Ltd ) These are your evening rugby headlines on Monday, June 16. Rugby league star joins Wales coaching staff Former Welsh rugby league star Ben Flower has been appointed to the Wales Women's coaching team for their summer training camp. The 37-year-old - who was also part of the coaching staff for the last Women's Rugby Word Cup in New Zealand - joins Sean Lynn's team as collision coach and will play a key role as the squad prepare for a two-Test match tour to Australia and their 2025 World Cup campaign in England later this summer. Cardiff-born Flower represented the Welsh-based Crusaders as well as Super League sides Wigan Warriors and Leigh Centurions during a glittering career that saw him win the Challenge Cup, three Super League titles and the World Club challenge with Wigan. On the international stage, he won 17 caps for the Wales rugby league side. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby. Having moved into coaching, Flower has taken charge of the South Wales Jets rugby league side as well as working with Wales Women four years ago. Upon returning to the coaching staff for a busy summer of rugby, he said: "Being involved with Wales is always a privilege and being asked and to have the chance of being involved with my country is an honour you don't turn down. Article continues below 'Having played at a World Cup as a player and to have this chance to play a role as Wales prepare for a World Cup is an opportunity I am looking forward to.' Wales are looking to turn around a poor run of form that saw them lose every match at the recent Women's Six Nations, with head coach Lynn hoping that added focus on their collision work will make a big difference during their upcoming World Cup campaign. Welcoming Flower to his staff, Lynn said: "'Ben is someone who has worked with this squad of players before and the W6N review highlighted the need to improve our collision work and dominance, both sides of the ball, as a real area we can improve on.' Ospreys powerhouse tipped for Wales call-up Departing Ospreys star Adam Beard has tipped teammate James Fender to become a Wales international despite missing out on a place on the summer tour to Japan. The 23-year-old lock has been a consistent performer for the Ospreys, with his no-nonsense style, athleticism and huge physicality seeing him dominate stronger packs, all while getting through a massive amount of work in defence. He had been on Warren Gatland's radar last season, but injuries prevented him from being called into the Wales squad. With Beard and Will Rowlands also not selected for the Japan tour by interim coach Matt Sherratt, Fender could count himself as extremely unlucky not to be picked, with many onlookers viewing it as the perfect time for him to be blooded as an international. Fender has been tipped to win international honours But while he looks set to have to wait to win his first cap, Beard has no doubt that Fender has the ability to thrive as an international second row, with another teammate, Rhys Davies, also tipped to add to his three Wales caps if he can steer clear of further injuries. 'There are some good second rows in Wales,' Beard told RugbyPass. 'I know from playing at the Ospreys that they have boys pushing through. "James Ratti is in the squad but they also have Rhys Davies and James Fender. Rhys has had some bad luck with injuries. If he has a run of games, it won't be long before he's wearing the Welsh jersey again. 'James is only 23, but he has all the attributes to be an international second row," he added. "He's had good exposure over the past couple of years, has taken charge of the set-piece and is learning with every game.' Borthwick names England squad By PA Sport Staff England head coach Steve Borthwick has named a 36-man training squad for next weekend's match against a France XV. The squad includes nine Bath and Leicester players – Charlie Ewels, Joe Heyes, Ted Hill, Guy Pepper, Will Muir, Max Ojomoh, Ben Spencer, Freddie Steward and Jack van Poortvliet – that featured in Saturday's Gallagher Premiership final, plus Bath's Sam Underhill, who missed the game due to suspension. However, there is no place for 21-year-old Saracens scrum-half Charlie Bracken, the son of former England international Kyran, one of 16 uncapped players named in the original training group when it was confirmed by England Rugby on Monday. Sale flanker Ben Curry is included among a list of players in rehabilitation along with Northampton duo Fraser Dingwall and George Furbank and Bristol's Harry Randall. Players who have been called up to Andy Farrell's British and Irish Lions party for their tour to Australia were not considered for selection, and neither were Joe Batley, Ollie Lawrence, Alex Lozowski, George Martin or Ollie Sleightholme. An England XV will face a France XV at the Allianz Stadium, Twickenham on Saturday ahead of Test matches against the United States and Argentina. Al Nassr set transfer fee for Arsenal and Aston Villa to sign Aymeric Laporte
Arsenal and Aston Villa have expressed interest in signing former Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte from Al Nassr, according to reports in Spain. Laporte was a mainstay in Pep Guardiola's Man City team for half a decade, making 180 appearances for the Etihad club and lifting five Premier League trophies. The Spain international completed a £23.6m move to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr two years ago in a summer which saw several high-profile players move to the country. Laporte was linked with a return to Europe last summer and similar speculation looks set to continue during this summer's transfer window. Spanish outlet AS say Laporte's former club Athletic Bilbao are showing serious interest in the 31-year-old, who has one year left on his lucrative contract with Al Nassr. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. It was at Bilbao that Laporte established himself as a top defender and caught the eye of Man City, who brought him to the Premier League in 2018 for £57m. It is claimed Athletic Bilbao boss Ernesto Valverde has asked the club to seal a return for Laporte but that the finances involved are beyond the La Liga club. Laporte would have to agree to take a significant pay-cut to return to Europe, while Al Nassr will insist on recouping most of the cash they spent on the defender 24 months ago, putting his price tag at around £20m. While the numbers involved make a move to Bilbao unlikely, the Spanish side will try to play on Laporte's ties to the club to welcome him back this summer. AS say Athletic Bilbao, who finished fourth in La Liga last season and reached the semi-finals of the Europa League, are not the only European club interested in Laporte. Premier League rivals Arsenal and Aston Villa have both registered interest along with French outfit Marseille and Italian giants Inter Milan and Napoli. Premier League – 5EFL Cup – 3FA Cup – 2Champions League – 1Super Cup – 1 PFA Team of the Year – 1 Arsenal's focus at the start of the summer transfer window has been on a striker – talks have been held with Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko – and a midfielder – Martin Zubimendi is closing in on a £55m move. But talk of multiple defenders leaving, including Kieran Tierney, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Jakub Kiwior, means Mikel Arteta may also look for defensive reinforcements. Arsenal have also been contacted over a deal for Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori but reportedly rejected the transfer approach. Aston Villa, meanwhile, have also welcomed one new defender to Villa Park this summer, young Turkey star Yasin Ozcan joining Unai Emery's squad. Speaking during his first season in the Saudi Pro League, Laporte suggested several players who had made the switch were unhappy. 'They haven't made it easy for us,' Laporte told AS. 'In fact, there are many players that are dissatisfied. 'They do look after us but not enough for my liking. That is to say, in Europe they pay you a good salary, but they take better care of you. More Trending 'I speak from my own experience and I don't know what the experience of others is like. 'For my part, what I have seen is that they try to bring you in, but then there is the day-to-day life and that is different.' Al Nassr, who also boast all-time great Cristiano Ronaldo, endured a disappointing 2024-25 campaign, failing to win any silverware and finishing third in the Saudi Pro League. As well as picking up a number of domestic trophies, Laporte also helped Spain win Euro 2024 last summer, starting the final as Luis de la Fuente's side beat England.
