Expat Villa fan in Paris excited for the team's match in her current home city
A British expat living in France says she will do whatever she can to try to watch her favourite football team play up close after years of supporting them from afar. Liz Medcraft used to be an Aston Villa season ticket holder after falling in love with the team when she was 12, before moving to Paris."I became fan when I watched David Platt score the last minute, extra time goal against Belgium in the 1990 World Cup", the former Stourbridge resident said. Aston Villa will play Paris St-Germain in the Champions League quarter-final with the first leg in Paris on 9 April.
"I wasn't born and bred a Villa fan", she told BBC Radio WM. But after watching Platt score, she said she was adamant to go and watch him play in real life. "I was 12 at the time. I thought I love him. I want to go see him and then my dad took me to Villa Park the following season," Ms Medcraft said."I saw two games that season and the second game I saw he scored a hat trick against Tottenham and I was hooked."After moving to Paris, Ms Medcraft said she was resigned to watching her team play on French TV on Saturday afternoons. "I was a season ticket holder until I moved to France. I followed them home and away - and now I follow them from far away", she added. But with Villa continuing their Champions League exploits with a trip to her current home city, Ms Medcraft said the excitement was starting to build. "Its going to be quite complicated but I'm going to try and get tickets," she said."It's quite exciting - I've started to get messages from all my French friends."Some are season ticket holders so I'm going to try to wrangle it!"

The Telegraph were first to report that the 35-year-old former Real Madrid and Wales forward was part of the group seeking to buy Argyle. The PA news agency understands the group featuring Bale has registered an interest in buying Argyle, but the process is at a very early stage. Bale featured for Wales at the 2022 World Cup – their first appearance at the global finals since 1958 – and at the Euros in 2016 and 2020.

The 37-year-old - who was also part of the coaching staff for the last Women's Rugby Word Cup in New Zealand - joins Sean Lynn's team as collision coach and will play a key role as the squad prepare for a two-Test match tour to Australia and their 2025 World Cup campaign in England later this summer. Cardiff-born Flower represented the Welsh-based Crusaders as well as Super League sides Wigan Warriors and Leigh Centurions during a glittering career that saw him win the Challenge Cup, three Super League titles and the World Club challenge with Wigan. Al Nassr set transfer fee for Arsenal and Aston Villa to sign Aymeric Laporte
Arsenal and Aston Villa have expressed interest in signing former Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte from Al Nassr, according to reports in Spain. Laporte was a mainstay in Pep Guardiola's Man City team for half a decade, making 180 appearances for the Etihad club and lifting five Premier League trophies. The Spain international completed a £23.6m move to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr two years ago in a summer which saw several high-profile players move to the country. Laporte was linked with a return to Europe last summer and similar speculation looks set to continue during this summer's transfer window. Spanish outlet AS say Laporte's former club Athletic Bilbao are showing serious interest in the 31-year-old, who has one year left on his lucrative contract with Al Nassr. It was at Bilbao that Laporte established himself as a top defender and caught the eye of Man City, who brought him to the Premier League in 2018 for £57m. It is claimed Athletic Bilbao boss Ernesto Valverde has asked the club to seal a return for Laporte but that the finances involved are beyond the La Liga club. Laporte would have to agree to take a significant pay-cut to return to Europe, while Al Nassr will insist on recouping most of the cash they spent on the defender 24 months ago, putting his price tag at around £20m. While the numbers involved make a move to Bilbao unlikely, the Spanish side will try to play on Laporte's ties to the club to welcome him back this summer. AS say Athletic Bilbao, who finished fourth in La Liga last season and reached the semi-finals of the Europa League, are not the only European club interested in Laporte. Premier League rivals Arsenal and Aston Villa have both registered interest along with French outfit Marseille and Italian giants Inter Milan and Napoli. Aston Villa, meanwhile, have also welcomed one new defender to Villa Park this summer, young Turkey star Yasin Ozcan joining Unai Emery's squad. Speaking during his first season in the Saudi Pro League, Laporte suggested several players who had made the switch were unhappy. 'They haven't made it easy for us,' Laporte told AS. 'In fact, there are many players that are dissatisfied. 'They do look after us but not enough for my liking. That is to say, in Europe they pay you a good salary, but they take better care of you. Al Nassr, who also boast all-time great Cristiano Ronaldo, endured a disappointing 2024-25 campaign, failing to win any silverware and finishing third in the Saudi Pro League. As well as picking up a number of domestic trophies, Laporte also helped Spain win Euro 2024 last summer, starting the final as Luis de la Fuente's side beat England.
