The Pride Parade Marches On: Loud, Proud And Unbought

With Pride Month concluding, the LGBTQ community has seen brands such as Target, Visa, Walmart, Amtrak, Boeing, Citi, Nissan and Pepsi pare their donations and sponsorships. The cuts resulted from risk assessment by corporations responding to political pressure after the Trump administration halted federal diversity, equity and inclusion programs.
Still, the parades have continued, some say with a renewed sense of fervor and purpose. 'The corporate exodus that has sent Pride organizers scrambling for alternative funding sources could be a blessing in disguise, paving the way for more meaningful celebrations,' said Slate senior writer Christina Cauterucci in her article, 'The End of the Rainbow.'
'Queers in big cities are already hosting massive events with minimal operating costs and no sponsors,' Cauterucci continued. 'They're called Dyke Marches, and they run on volunteer labor, community fundraising, and a lot of nerve.'

Observed annually in June, Pride Month commemorates the June 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City, a pivotal moment in the LGBTQ rights movement. The Christopher Street Liberation Day March, held on June 28, 1970, marked the event's first anniversary in New York City. The event was also celebrated in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Chicago.
This year's New York City Pride March will be held on June 29—it's among the world's largest. The theme, 'Rise Up: Pride in Protest!', harkens back to Stonewall's origins, when demonstrators fought back against a police raid. The New York City event will also hold Youth Pride on June 28, a 'block party-style, queer-affirming celebration of LGBTQIA+ youth and their families and allies,' according to the event website.

Not all corporations have cut associations with Pride Month. Not surprisingly, upscale clothing lines are largely on board. The 2025 Levi Strauss & Co. campaign, 'Meet You In The Park,' enlists musicians, chefs, artists, and entrepreneurs to help roll out its Levi's Pride collection, parade sponsorships and donations to organizations. Calvin Klein's 'This is Love' clothing collection includes a denim jacket with rainbow stylings.

Diesel and the Tom of Finland Foundation have teamed up for their fourth annual Pride collection. It includes the Finnish artist's works of masculinized homoerotic art, and 'polaroids from the foundation's parties and events, come to life on genderless pieces,' states the Diesel website. Selections include t-shirts, underwear and hoodies.

Avani Hotels & Resorts, a brand with properties in over 20 countries, has chosen five locations to celebrate Pride. On June 7, Avani+ Riverside Bangkok hosted a 'Drag Up The Past' event, paying tribute to queer musical artists. The hotel is also hosting a Pride Month art exhibition through June 30. Also in Bangkok: the Avani Sukhumvit and Avani Ratchada have hosted events. The hotel brand will close out the month with music, fashion, and live shows on June 28 at its Avani Chaweng Samui property in Koh Samui, Thailand, followed by a drag gourmet event on June 29. Avani's Amsterdam and Milan properties are also taking part.
"Pride isn't just a celebration, it's a celebration of progress,' says Rebecca Hall, Avani's PR and communications director. 'At Avani, we support every person's right to be seen, loved and celebrated exactly as they are.'
Rounding out the year, Pride celebrations are being held in Toronto (June 26-29), which is Canada's largest such festival, Madrid (June 27-July 5), Taipei (October 25-26) and Johannesburg (October 25), among others.

This year, EuroPride was held in Lisbon, Portugal, from June 14-22. Tens of thousands from across Europe gathered in the coastal capital for the parade, the week's highlight. EuroPride is hosted by a different European city each year. Amsterdam will host EuroPride 2026, and Turin (Torino in Italian) will host in 2027—'a loud signal to the Italian government' given recent pushback against LGBTQ rights, according to the European Pride Organizers Association. The northern Italian city captured more than half of votes, with the UK's Gloucestershire coming in second.
'Pride organizations from across Europe have sent a strong message to the Italian government led by Georgia Meloni, that the rollbacks on LGBTI+ equality and human rights must be stopped,' stated the European Pride Organizers Association.

‘60s teen heartthrob dies at 81 following Stage 4 cancer diagnosis
Bobby Sherman, a well-known singer and actor from the 1960s, has died at age 81. Brigitte Poublon, Sherman's wife, announced her husband's death in a joint Instagram post with close friend John Stamos on Tuesday, June 24. 'Bobby left this world holding my hand — just as he held up our life with love, courage, and unwavering grace through all 29 beautiful years of marriage," Poublon wrote. 'I was his Cinderella, and he was my Prince Charming. Even in his final days, he stayed strong for me. That's who Bobby was — brave, gentle, and full of light.' 'He lived with integrity, gave without hesitation, and loved with his whole heart,' she continued. 'Though our family feels his loss profoundly, we also feel the warmth of his legacy — his voice, his laughter, his music, his mission.' While no official cause of death was disclosed, Sherman was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in March. Poublon told Fox News in April that her husband was fighting kidney cancer that had 'spread everywhere,' adding he was 'terminally ill.' 'He's just sleeping more and his body's not working anymore,' Poublon told Fox News. 'Everything's shutting down.' She also told Fox News that the outpouring of love and support from Sherman's fans has 'been overwhelming.' This was something Poublon reiterated in her tribute post to Sherman. 'As he rested, I read him fan letters from all over the world — words of love and gratitude that lifted his spirits and reminded him of how deeply he was cherished. He soaked up every word with that familiar sparkle in his eye. And yes, he still found time to crack well-timed jokes,' she wrote in the Instagram post. 'Thank you to every fan who ever sang along, who ever wrote a letter, who ever sent love his way. He felt it. Rest gently, my love.' The singer and actor has also received support from several industry friends, including John Stamos who met Sherman at the Brigitte and Bobby Sherman Children's Foundation a few years ago, according to Fox News. 'We've been best friends ever [since],' Poublon told the outlet. 'John's been very great about giving support the last few years too.' Born in California, Sherman became a teen idol in the 1960s and early 1970s, according to PEOPLE. He had a series of successful singles, including 'Easy Come, Easy Go,' 'Julie, Do Ya Love Me' and 'Little Woman,' which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold more than a million copies. Sherman's big break came when portrayed Jeremy Bolt, a charmer and romantic, in the western TV series, 'Here Come the Brides.' Sherman left show business in the 1970s and became a certified medical emergency technician and instructor for the Los Angeles Police Department, according to his wife. 'He was a man of service,' Poublon wrote. 'He saved lives. He showed us what real heroism looks like — quiet, selfless, and deeply human." Bride and groom reveal clever way of deciding whose last name to take — while still at the altar: ‘This is incredibly cute'

While the bride traditionally takes the groom's last name, one creative couple has devised an egalitarian new method of deciding whose family name takes center stage — by playing rock, paper, scissors for it. In the tradition-bucking video posted to Instagram, the bride and groom were seen engaging in the 'high stakes' roshambo at the altar, with the loser of the best-in-three bout having to adopt the winner's last name. The groom, surnamed Pearce, won the first round, eliciting oohs and aahs from the crowd. However, his fiancée, surnamed the Hunter, evened the score during round two, prompting a nail-biting tie-breaker match. She then won a rock, paper, scissors rubber match, which meant that 'Hunter' would become the official family name. Their unorthodox name game split viewers on social media, with some bemoaning the fact that Pearce's likely longstanding surname was gone in a flash. 'Just like that a family surname just vanishes lmao,' lamented one critic, while another wrote, 'I'm sure his friends won't ridicule him for taking his wife's name.' However, others defended the couple's decision with one fan writing, 'Everyone going like 'omg no a lineage will end,' as if that isn't what has been happening for centuries every time a woman has to step away from her last name…' 'I say [the] cooler last name wins,' chimed in another person. Tom Cruise on Publicly Supporting 'Sinners': ‘When One Movie Wins, We All Win'
Tom Cruise's social media is a far cry from an endless promotion of various movies that recently hit theaters. While Cruise posts clips, photos and unique tidbits about his own films on his X account, one specific post in late-April stood out from the rest. The Mission: Impossible star had one message in the middle of wild clips from his upcoming film—a photo of himself holding a movie stub in front of a banner for the Ryan Coogler-directed film Sinners. The caption was the highest praise for Coogler, star Michael B. Jordan and the rest of the Sinners cast and crew. "Congratulations Ryan, Michael, and to the entire cast and crew. Must see in a cinema and stay through the end credits!" Cruise posted on X. Unsurprisingly, Cruise's message and post went viral quickly, as he threw his support behind the movie on social media and also by seeing it in theaters. Sinners became a box office juggernaut, currently ranking No. 10 among all R-rated movies on the cumulative domestic box office, pulling in $277.3 million, per The Numbers. While Sinners is an undisputed hit with fans, it excelled at IMAX theaters, as the movie was filmed with IMAX cameras. Cruise's support of the movie led to IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond texting him a thank-you message for supporting it. As The New York Times reported, Gelfond said Cruise responded quickly with a candid reply. "When one movie wins, we all win," Gelfond revealed Cruise said. Cruise's support of Sinners and his mindset in doing so are telling. Especially considering that Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning was nearing its debut at the time of his social media post.
