Fit and healthy Edinburgh entrepreneur diagnosed with cancer after routine check
An Edinburgh entrepreneur who was given a cancer diagnosis after a medical check at work is urging others to "keep talking".
Peter Proud, 55, was diagnosed with prostate cancer at the start of the year despite having no symptoms and being "fit and healthy".
A PSA level of 3.6 was detected and Peter was told he had stage two cancer - but is thankful it was picked up.
The CEO of Forrit underwent brachytherapy for prostate cancer in May and is on the road to recovery, but is now hoping to help others get diagnosed early and "save lives".
Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Peter said: "I had no symptoms whatsoever and it was picked up at a standard medical at work.
"They picked up my prostate cancer quickly and my tumour was small. It was growing but I was lucky to get caught really early.
"If I didn't get annual medical at work, it might have been too late. I think this is the important thing here — in Scotland 22 percent of people are caught too late with prostate cancer. How do we close this gap so people don't get diagnosed at stage four?"
Peter said he went straight into "solution mode" after he was given the news.

He added: "I was really grateful it was caught early and there was time to fix it. I went straight to solution mode immediately rather than feeling sorry for myself.
"I got the operation around two months ago - it was weird. I went through a honeymoon phase and it didn't really bother me, I just kept going with things.
"But after two weeks I just reached absolute fatigue - it felt like someone had turned the energy supply off. You just can't fight the tiredness."
Peter is now raising money for Prostate Cancer UK and will be taking part in Chris Hoy's Tour de 4 2025.
The GoFundMe description reads: "I'm sharing something deeply personal.
"At the end of May, I underwent Brachytherapy for Prostate Cancer. Thanks to early detection, I'm now on the road to recovery.
"But not everyone is as fortunate. In Scotland, 35% of men are diagnosed too late—at stage 4—when treatment options are limited and outcomes are far more serious.
"That's why I'm raising funds for Prostate Cancer UK—to help more men get diagnosed early and save lives. If you can, please sponsor me.
"Every donation, no matter how small, makes a real difference. Together, we can change the stats and give more men a fighting."

I couldn't work out why I always looked so ‘ugly' in selfies then realised my dream £300K home was slowly killing me
Plus, how the issues have put a strain on her marriage too TOXIC HOUSE I couldn't work out why I always looked so 'ugly' in selfies then realised my dream £300K home was slowly killing me A WOMAN discovered her dream home was slowly killing her - thanks to TikTok sleuths suggesting hidden mould could be causing her 'ugly' selfies. Sara Smith and her husband, Colin Smith, moved into their first dream $400,000 (£297,962) home in April 2024 after saving up for years. 12 Sara Smith discovered her dream home was slowly killing her due to the mould Credit: Kennedy Newsand Media 12 Sara and Colin moved into their first dream home in April 2024 Credit: Kennedy Newsand Media 12 Mould Sara discovered in her home Credit: Kennedy Newsand Media But just two days after they moved in, the 28-year-old started experiencing severe sinus congestions, which she put down to a cold. Six months later Sara noticed her eyelids and skin surrounding her eye turned pink, became itchy and started bleeding. The raw skin was dry and was sore when she used face wash or sweated while working out and initially believed it might be caused by allergies or eczema. Baffled, the procurement analyst posted videos on TikTok about her condition and claims commenters saved her life after saying the rash could be caused by mould. Following an inspection by a mould dog, the couple were shocked to find there was hidden water damage in nearly every room of the house, with the biggest stain lurking under the carpet. The couple have now moved out and alternate staying between their parents' houses while stumping up $10,000 (£7,452) for a remediation company, claiming their insurance doesn't cover it. They've had to bin most of their belongings, including electronics, due to the mould and also face high medical bills. A GoFundMe page has been set up by a friend to help support the couple. Sara claims the mould caused her to 'look ugly', triggered anxiety and depression and stopped her from seeing friends. Sara, from Columbus, Ohio, US, said: "My husband and I bought the house together, it's our first house. Serious Warning: New Side Effects of Popular Skin Creams Revealed "The market has been super bad, me and my husband Colin have been saving since 2020. It was a really big purchase, it's a lot for an hourly worker like myself. "Two days after moving in I started having severe sinus congestion, which I thought was just a cold. "I went to my primary care provider and she said it's just a cold. I went to an allergist a couple of weeks later and they gave me steroids. That helped for about two weeks but it returned. 12 Just two days after they moved in, the 28-year-old started experiencing severe sinus congestions, which she put down to a cold Credit: Kennedy Newsand Media 12 Six months later Sara noticed her eyelids and skin surrounding her eye turned pink, became itchy and started bleeding Credit: Kennedy Newsand Media 12 The couple were shocked to find there was hidden water damage in nearly every room of the house Credit: Kennedy Newsand Media "Six months in, the eye stuff happened. It started to look like a pink eye shadow and then more like a mask. "The rash was really itchy and it would bleed and crack when dry. "Whenever I worked out the sweat would make it burn so badly. Any type of face wash on it would be the most terrible experience ever." At her wits end, Sara decided to post and see if people had any tips for her issue. She continued: "TikTok told me to get out of there. 12 The raw skin was dry and was sore when she used face wash or sweated while working out and initially believed it might be caused by allergies or eczema Credit: Kennedy Newsand Media 12 They've had to bin most of their belongings, including electronics, due to the mould Credit: Kennedy Newsand Media "It really saved my life, if it wasn't for them commenting I would still believe it was some internal eczema thing. "The mould dog was good at finding the hidden sources. "We did get an inspection before buying the house, some mould was visible in the basement. "The ones that were causing the most issues were stuck between insulation and you couldn't spot it. 12 The couple have now moved out and alternate staying between their parents' houses Credit: Kennedy Newsand Media "The biggest one that was hidden was under the carpet. "My husband ripped off the carpet in the bedroom and it was covered in mould. [At some point someone] painted the ceiling white where the water damage was. "The thing about mould is it makes you really anxious and depressed so I never went to see my friends and I looked ugly so I thought I couldn't leave the house like this. "We had remediation completed last week, the estimate is $10,000. The insurance doesn't cover mould so I'm not getting a dime for this. "I have to get rid of 90% of my items, down to electronics because the mould spores get so deep in there." Living under our parents' roof has been really hard. "My eyes started getting better about two weeks after moving back to my parents' house. "They are fully healed now but because of the amount of exposure they've flared again because I had to go to the house to get rid of my stuff. "I'm so depressed, there has been a lot in my head. Whenever I think of the house, it used to bring me so much joy and now I think of it with such disdain, it makes me sick."

Warning as Edinburgh dogs 'fall ill' at popular walking beauty spot
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info An Edinburgh MP has called the pollution of a local waterway "unacceptable" after several dogs were allegedly made ill. Edinburgh Live reported on dogs developing "bad guts" from a "globular substance" in the Waters of Leith - but following a cleanup effort by Scottish Water, locals claim the problem persists. Now, Scott Arthur, MP for Edinburgh South West, has come forward with his firm position on "debris linked to sewage pollution" in the Waters of Leith. Residents raised the alarm in early August when a fatty substance was discovered along edge of the Waters of Leith in Bogsmill woods area. Scottish Water conducted a clean up on August 5 following the original report and found the material to be fats and grease that had been deposited down the sewer. However, dogs allegedly continued to grow ill as "fatty substances" remained present in the waterway, according to Longstone Community Council members. Scottish Water was again alerted to possible pollution and discovered fats and grease from disposable barbecues on the riverbank, though nothing sewer related. Scott Arthur has since arranged a meeting with Scottish Water to look at long-term solutions. (Image: Longstone Community Council) He told Edinburgh Live: "News that local dogs have been poisoned after ingesting debris linked to sewage pollution along the Water of Leith is deeply concerning. "Scottish Water's own data shows a recent discharge from their combined sewer system near Spylaw Park. "This is unacceptable, and I will be meeting with Scottish Water to push for greater accountability. "We should also be looking seriously at finding longer-term solutions to the overflow discharge problem, such as retrofitting infrastructure to remove rainwater from combined sewer systems, which would mean fewer spills and cleaner rivers. "Our community, and our environment, deserve far better.' A representative from the Longstone Community Council said: "Dogs are still getting ill and the fatty substance is still present. Another dog owner had [come forward]. Their dog had vomiting and bad guts." A Scottish Water spokesperson said: 'Our additional £500million Improving Urban Waters investment is already delivering projects to reduce sewer-related debris and spills on the Water of Leith. 'Customers can work with us by only flushing the 3 p's – pee poo and (toilet) paper – to prevent wipes, plastics and other materials harming the environment, wildlife and pets. 'Scotland's water quality is at its highest level ever and we remain committed to targeting resources and investment to preserve and protect Scotland's water environment.' Overflows are an essential and critical component in the sewer network, protecting homes and businesses from flooding during periods of heavy rain, according to Scottish Water. When spills occur, the overflows are operating as they are designed to stop the system backing up into homes and businesses. Less than 1 per cent of waste water arriving at treatment works come from toilets. When a storm overflow spills during heavy rain, this is diluted even further before entering the water environment. Woman will never be able to talk or walk again after botched Brazilian butt lift
Daidys Pena Garces was left fighting for her life after the Brazilian butt lift, which involves taking fat from the hips, abdomen and other areas via liposuction before injecting it into the buttocks A woman can no longer walk, talk or feed herself after a botched Brazilian butt lift operation. Daidys Pena Garces' procedure was allegedly carried out by an unqualified surgeon and, weeks after it, she suffered a pulmonary embolism that caused severe brain damage. This has left the 50-year-old woman unable to walk or talk, her husband Jorge Fernandez said. Mr Fernandez, who has effectively become his 50-year-old wife's carer, has now filed a lawsuit. He said: "She was my first, like my first love... [Now] she never more will talk or walk or eat by herself." A Brazilian butt lift, known as a BBL, involves taking fat from the hips, abdomen and other areas via liposuction before injecting it into the buttocks. Ms Garces, whose procedure was carried out in Miami, Florida, claims she was not made aware of the risks associated with the surgery. Although experts have long warned of the dangers of BBLs, which can prove fatal, recipients insist on proceeding with the surgery in the hope to get a bigger, more pert behind. Ms Garces fell unwell after her procedure in May 2023 and, after months in hospital, the outlook appears bleak. Her husband's attorney, Lavenia Santos, told WSVN: "This pulmonary embolism occurred because of this surgery... Garces would not have undergone the high-risk plastic surgery procedure had she known that the surgeon was not a trained and board-certified plastic surgeon. "The woman has no idea that she is not being cared for by a board-certified plastic surgeon. That's just wrong. If the public knew that, they probably not be so willing to go, regardless of price. What happened to her shouldn't happen to anyone." But in Florida, there is no legal requirement that a doctor be a board-certified plastic surgeon to perform a Brazilian butt lift. A GoFundMe page has been created for the Miami couple to help Ms Garces perform day-to-day activities she now struggles tio carry out. Her home may need to be adapted to help her manage her challenges. The page reads: "Daidys required emergency medical care and was hospitalized for seven months due to the pulmonary embolism... Now, Daidys is unable to perform any activities of daily living without assistance. Along with facing an extended recovery process, she is now burdened with growing medical bills and ongoing treatments." To donate to the appeal, visit this link. People considering cosmetic procedures abroad will soon be given advice on how to avoid risks by influencers. The Department of Health and Social Care is set to launch a campaign alongside TikTok to help people make safer choices.
