NiSource beats first-quarter profit estimates on robust power demand

Reuters07-05-2025

May 7 (Reuters) - U.S. electric and gas utility NiSource (NI.N), opens new tab beat Wall Street estimates for first-quarter profit on Wednesday, driven by strong demand for power.
Utilities continue to benefit from rising electricity usage - expected to reach record highs in 2025 and 2026, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration - driven by surging power demand from data centers looking to match Big Tech's AI ambitions.

In addition to the data centers, residences and commercial businesses have been using more electricity for transportation and heating, which has further increased demand for power.
"Despite market conditions and other forces beyond our control, the longevity of our plan is enduring and our investments are resilient," said CEO Lloyd Yates.
Across six states, the utility company serves natural gas to around 3.3 million customers through its Columbia Gas unit and electricity to 500,000 customers through its NIPSCO unit.
Quarterly total operating revenue for NiSource was $2.18 billion, compared with $1.71 billion a year earlier.
Its total customer revenue, which includes residential, commercial and industrial buyers at its electric and gas segments, increased 30.8% from a year earlier to $2.15 billion.
However, persistently high interest rates increased borrowing costs for power companies, which often require substantial capital for expenses such as maintaining and upgrading the electric grid.
NiSource said interest expenses rose 14.2% from a year earlier to $132.8 million in the reported quarter, while operating expenses were up nearly 27%.
The company reaffirmed its forecast for adjusted earnings to be between $1.85 and $1.89 per share. Analysts' average estimate was $1.87 per share.
The Merrillville, Indiana-based company reported a quarterly profit of 98 cents per share, compared with analysts' average estimate of 90 cents according to data compiled by LSEG.

Village Bakery MD Honoured for Industry Contribution at Wales Food and Drink Awards

A top baker has been honoured for his 'outstanding contribution' to the Welsh food and drink industry. The accolade was bestowed on Robin Jones, who has led the Wrexham-based Jones Village Bakery through a period of growth, at the Wales Food and Drink Awards. The ceremony to recognise the best of the best in the sector was held at Venue Cymru in Llandudno and was hosted by former BBC journalist and TV presenter Sian Lloyd, who also hails from Wrexham. It was the latest in a long line of awards Robin has received, having previously been named Baker of the Year at the bakery industry Oscars and winning the Enterprise category at the Welsh Government's annual St David's Awards. Last month the Village Bakery was given a King's Award for Enterprise after achieving record overseas sales over the past three years. Robin said that receiving the Outstanding Contribution award was special because he was among his peers in the Welsh food and drink industry. He is a third generation master baker at the Village Bakery which was bought by his father, Alan Jones, and his grandfather, Harry Jones, in 1964. As a teenager, he helped out at the bakery every weekend and in the school holidays and after qualifying as a baker he joined the firm full time, later becoming managing director. He and his brother Christien, an engineer by trade, formed a team at the top of the company as it expanded rapidly over the past two decades. Robin said: 'The outstanding contribution award came as a big shock. We went there to celebrate the success of one of our apprentices, Tilly Squire, who was one of the finalists, which was fantastic. 'I was quite humbled because the success of the Village Bakery isn't down to me per se. It was an award for Christien, for Dad, all the staff and everyone who's worked at the Village Bakery and has put a lot of effort in. 'We've worked very hard with some amazing people and we've seen the bakery grow but without Christien we wouldn't have built such a successful business. 'We've got complementary skills. He's the engineer and I'm the baker – I think that's the ethos of a small business when it comes to growth. We make a good team. 'My Dad always said to me that you don't create a legacy by standing still and I think we have created a heck of a legacy thanks to everybody involved, past and present. It's been one hell of a journey.' Among the major highlights for Robin was the opening of their ground-breaking gluten free bakery in 2008 and the opening of a new, state-of-the-art bakery in 2015 by the then Prince of Wales, and the then Duchess of Cornwall, now Queen Camilla. But tough times lay ahead when their flagship bakery was destroyed by a devastating fire but, most importantly, all the staff evacuated the building without anybody being hurt.. Robin added: 'The fire on the 19th of August in 2019 was a terrible shock but I think it showed what was in the DNA of the people at Village Bakery. 'We turned it around. We've gone from strength to strength and have never looked back. Our darkest day became our finest hour. 'I'm very proud of what we've achieved. The Village Bakery is now recognised as one of the best bakeries in the UK. 'I recently attended a bakery exhibition in Germany and we had a lot of positive feedback from people across Europe which was great. 'We have built our business on innovation and sheer quality and we have more exciting plans in the pipeline so the company keeps evolving and growing – it's great to be part of that. 'The secret of our success is that we never stand still – it's one of things I insist on and that will be in our DNA forever.' Liz Brookes, co-founder of the Wales Food and Drink Awards, said: 'Robin Jones has not only helped drive incredible growth in the family firm over the past 30 years, he has also inspired others through his passion to upskill local young people and his contribution to the wider Welsh food and drink sector. 'Jones' Village Bakery is now one of the biggest employers in the Welsh food and drink industry and its successful export story is flying the flag for Wales.'

Welsh Games Companies Share £850,000 Funding Boost

Six Welsh games development companies are set to receive an £850,000 funding boost from the Welsh Government. The Games Scale Up Fund for Wales is the first scheme of its kind. It was launched earlier this year by Creative Wales in partnership with UK Games Fund, who managed the applications. Its aim is to help Wales-based developers take their games projects from a pilot to a more substantial and self-sustaining model, by allowing for growth in scope, reach and impact. A total of £850,000 in funding support has been awarded to six companies: Cloth Cat COPA Gaming Goldborough Studios Rocket Science Sugar Creative Wales Interactive The announcement follows a successful trade mission to the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco in March, where five out of the six awarded companies joined the Cymru Wales stand to showcase their projects, meet major industry leaders and build new connections. Osian Williams, Director of COPA Gaming, said: 'Being backed by the Welsh Government through this scale-up funding isn't just a headline for us, it's a true game changer. 'It gives our team the confidence and resources to move forward, grow sustainably and to proudly create uniquely Welsh games for a global audience.' It's been an honour to manage the application process for Creative Wales.' Minister for Culture, Jack Sargeant, said: 'Wales has an incredibly talented and ambitious video games industry that's making its mark on the global stage. This investment is about giving our homegrown studios the financial backing to level up their operations and reach new audiences worldwide. 'I had the privilege of meeting several Welsh developers at GDC in San Francisco, and I was deeply impressed by their creativity and innovation. The feedback they received from international publishers confirms what we already know – Wales is becoming a significant player in the global gaming landscape.' Creative Wales currently has another fund open for applications. The Games Development Fund, closing on Thursday 5 June, offers between £10,000 to £50,000 to Wales-based businesses developing video and immersive games projects for commercial release. Rupee to drop on potential equity outflows, test key support

MUMBAI, June 4 (Reuters) - The Indian rupee is likely to open weaker on Wednesday, weighed down by equity outflows and corporate dollar demand for hedging and payment needs. The 1-month non-deliverable forward indicated an open in the 85.66-85.68 range, versus 85.59 in the previous session. The Indian rupee has been mostly on the back foot in recent sessions, with bankers pointing to sustained dollar demand for immediate payments, muted equity flows, and hedging activity during dollar dips. Foreign investors pulled over $300 million from Indian equities on Tuesday, according to preliminary data, adding to the more than $1 billion in outflows over the prior three sessions. "The price action hasn't been too encouraging lately (for the rupee)," a currency trader at a bank said. "Two things stand out — the rupee appears to be charting its own course, rather than following the broader Asia trend, and the underlying dollar demand remains heavy." Near-term support for the rupee is seen in the 85.60–85.70 range, an area that has attracted buyers in recent days. "The next key level to watch is 86 — a break above could prompt another wave of dollar buying," a treasury official at a bank said. Asian currencies were mixed on Wednesday, mirroring the previous session's tone. The dollar index was slightly lower after Tuesday's advance, with markets focused on the upcoming U.S. jobs report for May and developments in President Donald Trump's tariff negotiations with major trading partners, including China. The question marks around whether Trump and China President Xi Jinping will pick up the phone and have a conversation are an important driver of markets, MUFG Bank said in a note. That said, the market's sensitivity to tariff headlines appears to have waned. Intraday volatility in Asian currencies has come off. KEY INDICATORS: ** One-month non-deliverable rupee forward at 85.76; onshore one-month forward premium at 11.75 paisa ** Dollar index up at 99.22 ** Brent crude futures down 0.3% at $65.5 per barrel ** Ten-year U.S. note yield at 4.45% ** As per NSDL data, foreign investors sold a net $246.4mln worth of Indian shares on June 2 ** NSDL data shows foreign investors bought a net $53.2mln worth of Indian bonds on June 2
