Blue Jays place bullpen stalwart Yimi Garcia on injured list with shoulder impingement

Yahoo24-05-2025

The Blue Jays bullpen, for much of the season a strength for the team, was dealt a potentially significant blow in Tampa on Saturday.
The team announced that Yimi Garcia, a hard-throwing, late-inning specialist for the Jays, has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a right-shoulder impingement.
Manager John Schneider told reporters at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, where the Jays were scheduled to face the Rays in the second game of a weekend series on Saturday night, that the issue had been building over a number of weeks.
Garcia has had an excellent season to date, pitching to a 3.15 ERA over 20 innings. He has two saves in the 21 appearances thus far, striking out 24.
If the injury is for any length time — or has lingering effects — it could be a devastating development for the Jays pitching staff, which already has been short-handed on the starter side, operating on a four-man rotation. That shortage in manpower has put added strain on the bullpen, among the most-worked units in the majors.
Garcia saw two lengthy bullpen stints in 2024, both with elbow issues. The first was with the Jays and the second after he was dealt to the Seattle Mariners at the MLB trade deadline.
The loss of Garcia, for however long it will be, plus the recent struggles of closer Jeff Hoffman, creates some uncertainty at the back end of the Jays bullpen. Hoffman has struggled to a 16.71 ERA in his nine appearances in May, allowing four home runs this month.
Right hander Paxton Schultz was recalled from triple A Buffalo on Saturday and was active for the game against the Rays.
The Jays, who are in the middle of a 13-games-in-13-days stretch, are hoping to get an influx of healthy bullpen arms soon with both Erik Swanson and Nick Sandlin working on minor league rehab assignments.
Meanwhile, outfielder Anthony Santander, who has battled hip and shoulder injuries for much of the month, was back in the lineup and playing right field for Saturday's middle contest of the three-game weekend series against the Rays.
The Blue Jays lost Friday's series opener 3-1.

Former Notre Dame catcher Carson Tinney could land at Florida

Former Notre Dame catcher Carson Tinney could land at Florida Former star Notre Dame catcher Carson Tinney may soon have a new home. Per Baseball America's Jacob Rudner, Florida is in the mix for the former Fighting Irish backstop, who hit .348 with 17 home runs and 53 RBIs as a sophomore with the Fighting Irish. He is one of the more intriguing players currently in the transfer portal. This past season, the Gators used Luke Heyman and Brody Donay behind the plate. An injury to Heyman near the end of the year forced Donay to become the full-time catcher the rest of the way, but his defense was an issue. Could the Gators shift him to first base or designated hitter? UF did bring in JUCO catcher AJ Malzone, but landing Tinney would be a real coup. It helps the cause that the Gators landed former ND pitcher Ricky Reeth, whose pitches were caught by Tinney in South Bend this past season. Losing Tinney was a tough blow for the Irish. He was the team's best player and a centerpiece of Shawn Stiffler's rebuild in South Bend. US Open '25: Oakmont's par-3 8th hole requires removing a head cover

OAKMONT, Pa. — Maybe no one would complain about the eighth hole at Oakmont Country Club if the term 'par' had never been created in championship golf. But there it sits in the middle of the this tough U.S. course, the longest par 3 in major championship history, 289 yards on the scorecard and certain to top 300 yards in actual distance for one round, just as it did in 2007 at Oakmont.

Brian Snitker Predicted to Leave Braves After Season Hits 'Rock Bottom'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. After a brutal loss, the Atlanta Braves could be headed toward the end of an era. Sitting at 27-34 going into Friday and in fourth place in the National League East division, the Braves are at serious risk of missing the playoffs for the first time since 2017. And after an astounding blown lead against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday, it seems all but assured that manager Brian Snitker won't be back after this year. "If you were looking for rock bottom, this might be it," former Braves pitcher turned broadcaster Tom Glavine said of the performance, per The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. The Braves blew a six-run lead over the Diamondbacks in the ninth inning after Snitker pulled starter Grant Holmes from the game in the early innings and jump-started the reliever carousel. It turned out to be one of several missteps this season that suggest it's time for the team to move on without their legendary manager when his contract comes to an end this year. (Photo by Tim Clayton/Corbis via Getty Images) More Clayton/Getty Rosenthal predicted this season would ultimately mark the end of Snitker's tenure. "Snitker isn't blameless," he wrote. "The Braves aren't going to fire him after all he has achieved, but this sure looks like his last season." In his 10th campaign with the Braves, Snitker could log just his third losing record as the team's skipper if he is unable to turn it around. Despite his success and the fact that plenty of blame lies with the front office as well as harsh injuries to some star players, it's hard to imagine a 70-year-old Snitker coming back to lead the Braves after the last season of his current contract. If Thursday's debacle comes to define this season, losing Snitker won't be the only major change the Braves see.
