Singapore woman quits S$6k job to escape toxic boss, ends up struggling on half the pay

SINGAPORE: Many employees leave their high-paying jobs to escape the stress of a toxic work environment or difficult bosses. However, a man recently shared on social media that such moves do not always lead to happier outcomes.
Posting on Reddit's Ask Singapore forum, he said his sister experienced this firsthand.
According to him, she left her S$6,000-a-month job because of a 'toxic boss' and an 'overly demanding' workplace. She eventually took on a job paying S$3,000, hoping that her mental health would improve and that she would enjoy a better work-life balance.
Unfortunately, things did not turn out as she had imagined.
The man said his sister recently complained that her new role remains stressful and tiring. On top of that, she is now struggling financially.
'She walked away from S$6k to earn S$3k, and now she complains she's got no money,' he said. 'It's the very decision she made for herself, yet she's resenting it.'
He also shared that when he tried to offer practical solutions to improve her situation, his sister dismissed every suggestion outright.
'I talked to her about upgrading her skills to ease into finding a different job with a higher salary, [but she said] it's 'so time-consuming' and that 'those institutions are just out there to make money, not really professional in teaching,'' he wrote.
'OK, then I suggested self-learning, [but she said she had] 'no time,' and 'I can't follow if I have no structure.''
The man said it has been frustrating to watch his sister remain in a cycle of dissatisfaction without taking any steps toward change.
Beyond the emotional strain, the situation has also had a tangible impact on their family finances. Since his sister stopped contributing a monthly allowance to their parents, he has been forced to shoulder more of the household's expenses on his own.
Feeling stuck and unsure how to help, he turned to the Reddit community for advice.
'How do you advise someone like this? She's got years of working ahead of her, but she seems stuck and unwilling to make any change,' he said.
'What kind of counselling service or career advisor in SG can I send her to? I can't just leave her like that because she's my sister, and I want her to be happy, whether she's earning S$3k or S$6k. I want her happy and healthy, not complaining and stuck.' 'Every time she complains, you have to shut her down.'
In the discussion thread, one commenter bluntly told the man that his sister needed to take responsibility for her choices.
'Your sis is a working adult. She has to learn to resolve her own issue and make her own decision,' they wrote. 'You can help advise her, but that is all. She has to work it out herself. The more you help her, the more she will take for granted and ignore you.'
Another echoed this sentiment, writing, 'No, you can't do anything but advise nicely once. Subsequently, the best you can do is just listen. Because if she didnt listen the first time, no matter what you say is not going to work. So let her rant if she needs it.'
A third suggested, 'You have to be honest with her that she cannot complain if she doesn't want to try and put in the work. Every time she complains, you have to shut her down.'
In other news, a part-time worker has publicly criticised a 'drink stall chain' in Singapore for making her and other employees pay for any incorrectly made beverages.
In a post on the r/SGexams subreddit, the worker wrote that she found the policy both 'unnecessary' and 'unreasonable,' especially since they are only paid S$9 per hour.

Former CAG chairman heads 2025 National Day Awards list

SINGAPORE: Former Changi Airport Group (CAG) chairman Tan Gee Paw has been conferred one of Singapore's top honours. He leads this year's list of National Day Awards recipients, having been awarded the Order of Nila Utama, or Darjah Utama Nila Utama, for his contributions in advancing Singapore's development on multiple fronts, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) said in a citation. Instituted in 1975, the honour is accorded by the president on the advice of the prime minister. Mr Tan is one of 7,210 people who have been recognised for their contributions to Singapore in this year's National Day Awards list. The recipients are made up of 6,460 civilians and 750 members of the military. VISIONARY LEADERSHIP Mr Tan played a significant role in augmenting Singapore's air hub competitiveness, water security and rail reliability, according to MOF's citation. From October 2020 to March 2025, he was the chairman of CAG. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, he kept CAG focused on Changi Airport's core mission as an airhub, enabling it to quickly achieve full traffic recovery post-pandemic. Mr Tan also contributed to the Changi East project and the design of Terminal 5. "Under his leadership, CAG advanced its innovation and sustainability efforts, enhanced operational efficiency and made significant infrastructure upgrades," read his citation. Mr Tan also served as the chairman of PUB, Singapore's national water agency, between 2001 and 2017. He enhanced Singapore's water security through initiatives such as NEWater and long-term water infrastructure projects, including the Marina Barrage. As an advisor to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Ministry of Transport, Mr Tan "provided guidance to resolve complex technical issues" on rail projects and advised LTA on critical organisational issues. He also urged Singapore's rail operators to achieve a common rail reliability target by 2020. DISTINGUISHED SERVICE ORDER This year's National Day Awards will see two individuals being conferred the Distinguished Service Order, or Darjah Utama Bakti Cemerlang: defence scientist Lui Pao Chuen and late artist Lim Tze Peng. Prof Lui is conferred the Distinguished Service Order for his contributions to Singapore in numerous domains. A citation issued by MOF referred to him as "a pioneering advocate of systems thinking". He served for 41 years in the Ministry of Defence, including spending 22 years as its first chief defence scientist. Prof Lui is the inaugural Temasek defence professor at the Temasek Defence Systems Institute and chairman of the Singapore Nuclear Research and Safety Institute. Since retirement, he continues to contribute to education, science, technology, urban development, defence and infrastructure, the citation read. He served as an advisor to several agencies, including the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of National Development, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Research Foundation. He was also a board member of the Economic Development Board. "Prof Lui has been instrumental in advancing Singapore's research capabilities and technologies across multiple spheres, from nuclear science, water sustainability, national security, underground cavern development, to the establishment of Singapore's space capabilities," according to his citation. As chairman of MOF's development projects advisory panel, Prof Lui provided "strategic leadership" in the review of major public infrastructure projects, achieving cost-effective outcomes. He also guided the planning of Changi Airport Terminal 5, Tuas Port and the island's coastal protection. Mr Lim will receive the honour posthumously for his contributions to Singapore's cultural heritage and visual arts landscape. The iconic artist, known for his innovative approach to Chinese ink and calligraphy, died earlier this year at the age of 103. Mr Lim, whose artistic career started in the 1950s, was the first Singaporean to hold solo exhibitions at the National Art Museum of China and the Liu Haisu Art Museum, according to his award citation provided by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. The self-taught artist's works have also been showcased outside of Asia, including at the Saatchi Gallery in London and the Grand Palais in Paris. Mr Lim's citation highlighted the importance of his Old Singapore Series, describing it as "an invaluable visual archive of Singapore's heritage" which masterfully captured Singapore's transformation through depictions of Chinatown and the Singapore River. "These works preserve memories of kampongs, shophouses and bustling river life, connecting generations of Singaporeans to their cultural roots," it said. In 1949, Mr Lim became a teacher at Xin Min School, before going on to become its principal in 1951 – a position he held until 1981. In 2014, he established the Lim Tze Peng Art Gallery at his alma mater, Chung Cheng High School (Main). The gallery was officially opened by then Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Jul 10, 2014. In 2022, Mr Lim opened The Art Abode: Lim Tze Peng on Ubi Road, a dedicated space showcasing his life's work. Twelve individuals have been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, or Pingat Jasa Gemilang. Among them are social scientist Dr Noeleen Heyzer; PAVE CEO Sudha Nair; and Singapore International Arbitration Centre chairman Davinder Singh. The full list of 2025 National Day Award recipients was announced on the on Saturday (Aug 9).

Indian PM Modi says he had ‘good' conversation with Putin

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday (Aug 8) that he had "a very good" conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which they discussed Ukraine and ways to strengthen bilateral ties. The call came as Modi, leader of the world's most populous nation and its fifth-largest economy, faces difficult decisions over New Delhi's purchase of Russian oil. US President Donald Trump has given India, one of the world's largest crude oil importers, three weeks to find alternative suppliers or face new import tariffs of 50 per cent, up from the current 25 per cent. "Had a very good and detailed conversation with my friend President Putin. I thanked him for sharing the latest developments on Ukraine," Modi posted on social media. "I look forward to hosting President Putin in India later this year." OIL IMPORTS UNDER PRESSURE Buying Russian oil has saved India billions of dollars on import costs, keeping domestic fuel prices relatively stable, but that benefit is now under threat because of Trump's tariffs. The oil purchases are a key source of revenue for Moscow's war in Ukraine. Russia is also one of India's top arms suppliers, and the warm ties between the two countries date back to the Soviet era. Putin last visited India in December 2021. The Kremlin has criticised calls to "force countries to sever trading relations" with Russia as "illegitimate", without directly mentioning Trump. Putin also met India's national security adviser Ajit Doval in Moscow on Thursday, but no details were provided about their discussions. PEACEFUL RESOLUTION Ukraine's Western allies have sought to cut Russia's export earnings since Moscow launched its military assault in February 2022. However, Russia has been able to redirect energy sales away from Europe to countries including India and China. India has argued it began importing more oil from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the conflict began. The Kremlin has said a summit on Ukraine between Trump and Putin is planned for the coming days, although no time or venue has been announced. During his call with Putin, Modi reiterated India's consistent position of seeking a "peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict", a government statement said. TRADE TENSIONS WITH WASHINGTON The Indian leader, facing major political and economic consequences at home and abroad from Washington's tariff measures, has not spoken directly about Trump. However, he said on Thursday that "India will never compromise" on the interests of its farmers. Agriculture employs vast numbers of people in India and has been a key sticking point in trade negotiations with Washington. India had earlier hoped for special tariff treatment after Trump said in February that he had found a "special bond" with Modi.

High-profile Chinese dealmaker Bao Fan released from detention after two years, source says

BEIJING: Bao Fan, the star dealmaker and founder of boutique investment bank China Renaissance Holdings has been released more than two years after being detained by Chinese authorities, a person with knowledge of the matter said on Friday (Aug 8). China Renaissance shook the country's financial sector in 2023 when it announced it was unable to contact Bao, who founded the bank in 2005 with two other partners and still owns nearly 49 per cent of its issued shares. Bao was among several high-profile executives in China, mostly from the finance industry, who went missing in recent years with little explanation during a sweeping anti-corruption campaign spearheaded by President Xi Jinping. His disappearance unsettled professionals in the financial industry of the world's second-largest economy, as Beijing pressed its campaign to rein in what it described as the lavish lifestyle of the financial elite. BOOSTING BUSINESS CONFIDENCE Bao's release comes as Beijing seeks to bolster business confidence, particularly among the country's tech entrepreneurs, whose companies have been hit by a years-long crackdown. China is looking to restore confidence in the private sector, which has been struggling with weak domestic consumption and a prolonged debt crisis in the property sector, set against a backdrop of heightened trade tensions with the United States. "This is certainly a positive signal, as Bao was the most high-profile financier detained in recent years," said Christopher Beddor, deputy China research director at Gavekal Dragonomics. "Still, it will not change the fact that the anti-corruption campaign continues to churn through the financial sector, and the common prosperity campaign has led to sweeping pay caps and even clawbacks," Beddor said. "China's financial sector remains a long way from its heyday only a few years ago." HIGH-PROFILE DEALS Bao, widely regarded as one of China's best-connected bankers, was released from detention earlier this week, the person said, declining to be identified because the information was not public. He had been involved in major deals including the mergers of ride-hailing firms Didi and Kuaidi, food delivery companies Meituan and Dianping, and travel platforms Ctrip and Qunar. Neither China Renaissance nor Bao immediately responded to Reuters' requests for comment. Chinese media outlet Caixin first reported Bao's release, citing unidentified sources. China Renaissance's shares jumped 17 per cent on Friday to close at HK$6.87 (US$0.8752) before the news of his release became public. DETAINED IN 2023 Bao, who previously worked at Credit Suisse and Morgan Stanley, went missing in February 2023. Trade in China Renaissance shares was suspended in April 2023 after the bank delayed publication of its audited annual results due to mainland Chinese authorities detaining Bao as part of an investigation. A Chinese financial publication reported in May 2023 that he was detained by disciplinary and supervision officials. Authorities have not provided any explanation. China Renaissance shares plunged 72 per cent on the day trading resumed last September. Sources previously told Reuters that Bao was taken away to assist in an investigation into a former colleague. Xie Yi Jing, who co-founded China Renaissance, replaced Bao as chairman in February last year.
