49ers' Fifth-Round Draft Pick Could Surprise Many in 2025
The San Francisco 49ers had a sneaky need at safety this offseason, and, after focusing on offense in the later rounds of this year's draft, general manager John Lynch selected Kansas State's Marques Sigle in the fifth round at No. 160 overall.

He'll bring some speed to the position, as evidenced by his 4.37-second 40-yard dash and the NFL Scouting Combine this year.
Sigle will immediatley add some depth to the safety room and could have a chance to be a part of the rotation.
USA Today's Bucs Wire named Sigle the 49ers' candidate to surprise as a rookie.
"Marques Sigle's path to snaps was opened significantly with news that second-year safety Malik Mustapha is dealing with a knee injury he sustained in the 2024 season finale," wrote Niners Wire's Kyle Madison. " It's unclear what Mustapha's timeline for return is, but it opens a starting safety spot alongside Ji'Ayir Brown whose job is also not safe.

"Sigle brings a ton of athleticism to a safety room that doesn't have enough of it. If he winds up starting in Robert Saleh's defense, he has the tools to become a Swiss Army knife defender who causes havoc in the secondary."
NFL.com's Lance Zierlein noted Sigle's aggression in his NFL Draft profile.
"Two-year starter at Kansas State after transferring from North Dakota State. Sigle is well built and plays the game with ideal aggression," Zierlein wrote. "He's a physical run defender who can blow up plays in the backfield but is in too big a hurry as a tackler, resulting in a higher miss rate. He might lack the necessary speed and instincts to make plays in coverage from man or zone.
"Sigle is listed as a safety, but he will need to play near the line of scrimmage or as a big nickel with coverage limitations. He has NFL backup potential with good special teams traits."

2025 NFL, CFB, MLB Best Bets, Predictions By Chris 'The Bear' Fallica
"Bear Bets" are real wagers that Chris "The Bear" Fallica is actually making. There's something incredibly special about fall sports. Between college football, NFL and MLB postseason, there is fun to be had for all — particularly when it comes to laying a few wagers. That's where I come in. One of the wagers below features Kyle Shanahan, and it's what I believe to be a really solid bet. Let's take a look at where I'm sprinkling my cash this week. Penn State to make the CFP This is my favorite bet in college football this season. No team in the sport is more predictable or trustworthy than Penn State, which usually hammers the teams it is supposed to, and loses to top-five, top-10-type teams. This puts the Nittany Lions at a 10-2 floor, as they have both Oregon and Ohio State on the slate. The Oregon game is at State College, so let's say PSU wins that game. Maybe the game at Iowa is tricky? Potentially lose at Ohio State? That's it. Even the detractors of Drew Allar have to think Penn State is returning to the College Football Playoff behind a powerful running game and elite defense, even without Abdul Carter. Some people do not like laying a price like this, but I have no issue doing so. A 10-2 record and a CFP berth for Penn State — book it. PICK: Penn State (-290) to make the CFP Kyle Shanahan to win Coach of the Year Just about everything that could go wrong for the 49ers last year did. Injuries to Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams and others. Blown late leads. It was just one of those years in the Bay after another agonizing Super Bowl loss. There isn't a ton of depth here, but injury luck doesn't tend to repeat itself in consecutive years, meaning expect the Niners to be healthier this season. The schedule is about as easy as could be coming off a 6-11 season, and, with a win total of 10.5, the Niners are supposed to be good. Robert Saleh returns to San Francisco to coach a defense that has played as if it missed his leadership over the last couple of seasons. Maybe Shanahan doesn't fit the mold of a young head coach or a head coach from a team that's going to surprise, but there's a chance the Niners could post something like 12-5 and win the division, given that schedule, especially if the concerns over Rams QB Matthew Stafford are realized. I just don't get how guys like Aaron Glenn are shorter-priced in this market, given how the Jets are going to win like six games. PICK: Kyle Shanahan (20-1) to win Coach of the Year Clayton McCullough to win NL Manager of the Year Okay, by now we've all made the joke, "Can you name the Marlins manager?" But Clayton McCullough and the Marlins might be getting the last laugh. The former Dodgers first-base coach has Miami on the cusp of a .500 record after sweeping the Yankees. While it might be a little too much to ask him to reach the playoffs given the strength of the current NL wild cards, it's not unreasonable to think he's in the mix for NL Manager of the Year consideration. This has been a lineup and rotation in flux all season and if Miami actually got some decent pitching from Sandy Alcántara in the first half of the season, it might actually have a legit chance at a wild card. Brewers manager Pat Murphy is a big favorite here, and I guess he should be. But in terms of doing more with less, McCullough certainly deserves consideration if the Marlins finish with a winning record. Obviously, I'm late to the party here in terms of the number, but I'll jump in now in case they continue this hot streak. PICK: Clayton McCullough (23-1) to win NL Manager of the Year Chris "The Bear" Fallica has covered sports for nearly three decades. While college football has been his focus, he also enjoys the NFL, Soccer, Golf, Tennis, MLB, NHL and Horse Racing, with an "occasional" wager on such events. Chris recently won the inaugural Circa Football Invitational and finished in the Top 10 of the Golden Nugget Football Contest. He's a multiple-time qualifier for the NHC Handicapping Championship. Kyle Shanahan explains why 49ers are cutting down joint practices vs. Broncos
The San Francisco 49ers are making a significant change to how they execute joint training camp practices this season. Instead of their typical two-day sessions leading up to a preseason game against that opponent, the 49ers will have only one joint practice before facing that opponent in an exhibition bout. At first it seemed like a strange decision by head coach Kyle Shanahan. He has consistently during his time as the 49ers head coach talked about how much more he values joint practices than preseason games. This year he determined quality is better than quantity. He explained the cut down from two practices Monday during his post-practice press conference. 'Whoever does better the first day," Shanahan said, "usually they get killed the second day and everyone ends up fighting and it just ends up not being worth it. So, I think one day should be a little easier.' Still, despite moving to just one practice, Shanahan's belief in the value of joint practices remains. 'I think it's really valuable," Shanahan said. "Sometimes you can't do it. I'd always would like to do it. I'm more excited just going against someone once. In the past I've always done two days, and I'm always really excited by the end of the first day. I'm always wishing we didn't have to go the second day. So, kind of glad we're ahead of that on this. It's always good to go against different schemes too. Different players. We're going against each other every day. Same guys, same scheme. It gets a little bit old and it's a good way to switch it up.' The 49ers and Broncos will practice Thursday at 10:25am Pacific Time, have Friday off, and then square off in Week 1 of the preseason Saturday at Levi's Stadium with kickoff slated for 5:30pm Pacific Time. Why Ricky Pearsall should be 49ers' top-ranked fantasy WR
Yahoo Fantasy analyst Matt Harmon and contributor Ray Garvin explain why San Francisco's second-year receiver should have plenty of fantasy value in an already banged up offense. Hear the full conversation on the 'Yahoo Fantasy Forecast' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript For Ricky Pearsall, the first few weeks he was out there, you could definitely tell that there was rust. He was not in football shape, he was not in regular shape because he had been shot in the chest in August. However, by the end of the season, the last four weeks for his reception perception sample, this is a guy that was absolutely smoking man coverage, he was winning as a flanker, he was winning as a slot receiver, running vertical routes from the slot, running a lot of whip routes, options, screens, things we don't normally see in this 49ers offense. He really has a singular role here, Ray. Like, is he gonna be stepping into the vacated targets and the vacated routes that Deebo Samuel leaves behind? For sure, but he fits a very different skill set and one that Brock Purdy and him, once they got on the same page, really had a lot of trust. Obviously, Brandon Aiyuk is likely to start the season on PUP with Jauan Jennings having a calf slash contract injury right now in training camp. I think Ricky Pearsall should be the number one ranked 49ers wide receiver in fantasy right now. So he's someone that in the double digit rounds is gonna be available for a lot of the drafts that are coming up for people. I know that others are more hip to him, but man, he's somebody where he's ranked right now, expert consensus wide receiver 44. I'd like to be ahead of the market on that one. Listen, there are levels to the sleeperness, right? There are levels to this, and I absolutely believe that at cost Ricky Pearsall is still a sleeper. You, the graphic with the whole team, the offense that was on the screen, the producer, they just need to put, the medical tent around Isaac Bindo, Jauan Jennings, Brandon. You, it's Ricky Pearsall and it's George Kittle. They just paid Brock Purdy $200 million. You think they're gonna give him any sort of, you know, it's no big deal, Brock. You don't, you don't have IU. Jennings isn't, no, throw the damn ball, get the ball to Ricky Pearsall, your former first-round pick, get the ball to George, George Kittle. I, I don't, I don't wanna, I don't wanna diminish anything here, but a byproduct of just being available, it's Ricky Pierson, and this is a team in San Francisco. This is not a, we've got a couple of years and we, you know, we'll, we'll figure it out. No, we need to go get it now. Brock Purdy, we paid you to be the guy. We drafted you Ricky Piersall. You've got one of the best, if not the best tight end outside of Brock Bauer in football and George Kittle. Yes, Piersall is going to outproduce his 44. I'm not taking 43 wide receivers over, over Ricky Piersall. So whether you want to say, well, that's not that deep of a sleeper, you're still, to be wide receiver 44, that's outside of wide receiver 3 territory, he is going to return far more fantasy value than his current ranking.
