BrahMos Primary Offensive Weapon, Akashteer Used For Defence: DRDO Chief On Operation Sindoor
Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) chairman Samir Kamat on Saturday emphasised that BrahMos missiles and the Akashteer defence systems were instrumental technologies that played a key role in Operation Sindoor– India's military strikes against Pakistan in response to Pahalgam terror attack.
While addressing the 14th convocation ceremony of Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) in Pune, Kamat said that the operation was a declaration of its ability to stand tall through self-reliance, strategic foresight, and indigenous technological strength.
'Operation Sindoor was more than a mission. It was a declaration of India's ability to stand tall through self-reliance, strategic foresight, and indigenous technological strength. It was a statement to the world that India has the capability to protect its borders through homegrown technology," he asserted as reported by news agency PTI.
He said the systems deployed for the operation included Akash surface-to-air missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, the D4 anti-drone system, the AWNC airborne early warning and control system, and the Akashteer system — all developed by India's defence R&D ecosystem.
'When it comes to offensive weapons, BrahMos was the primary weapon used, which was launched from our Sukhoi Mark 1 platform. When it comes to defensive weapon systems, the Akashteer system, the anti-drone system and the MRSAM were used," he said as quoted by news agency ANI.
He also explained how the Akashteer system helped in identifying threats coming towards the country, and in deciding what kind of weapon could be used to neutralise such threats.
'All the sensors were networked using the Akashteer, which helped in identifying the threats coming towards us and then deploying the right kind of weapon to neutralise those threats. Advanced early warning and control aircraft were also used for advanced surveillance. This is broadly what I can say without getting into too much," the DRDO Chairman said.
All About BrahMos, Akashteer System
The BrahMos missile is a versatile and formidable weapon, capable of being launched from land, air and sea, enabling strikes from multiple fronts. Jointly developed by India and Russia, it is renowned for its supersonic speed, pinpoint accuracy, and adaptability across a range of military operations.
During Operation Sindoor, the IAF relied on BrahMos missiles to launch a precision strike campaign targeting key Pakistani military installations, including airbases and cantonments. The operation, which was executed with high accuracy and minimal collateral damage, has been hailed within defence circles as a major demonstration of India's growing long-range strike capability.
The Indian armed forces activated the Akashteer system — an indigenous command-and-control air defence platform dubbed India's 'Make in India' Iron Dome — to intercept and neutralise a wave of incoming Pakistani projectiles.
The system integrated inputs from all radar sources — including ground-based radars and airborne early warning systems — and generated a live web of real-time data to precisely track aerial threats. This network enabled Indian forces to intercept and neutralise every missile launched from across the border that night, preventing damage to any intended targets.
Operation Sindoor
In one of the biggest attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, Lashkar-linked terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in Pahalgam on Tuesday, April 22, killing at least 26 people, including foreign tourists, and injuring many others. The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar offshoot, claimed responsibility for the attack.
India responded with Operation Sindoor on May 7, bombing nine terrorist camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in pre-dawn strikes that killed at least 100 militants. The operation sparked four days of cross-border fighting involving fighter jets, missiles and artillery.

Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, and Commander Prerna Deosthalee on Friday offered viewers a rare inside look at Operation Sindoor, India's counterterror mission launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, during a special episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati. Triservice officers offer insight into Operation Sindoor on KBC Wing Commander Singh detailed the precision strikes that crippled terrorist infrastructure. 'We attacked in the interiors of the enemy to break their backs. The hands of those who watered the cactus of terrorism were broken. Twenty-one terror camps were recognised. Nine camps were finalised, and the game was done in 25 minutes,' she said. Colonel Qureshi explained the targets. 'Bahawalpur was the headquarters of the Jaish-e-Mohammed, from where terrorists who attacked Pathankot and Pahalgam were trained; Muridke had the headquarters of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, where Ajmal Kasab and David Headley were trained. Therefore, we had to destroy those places.' Singh added that terrorist camps operated under the cover of civilians. 'We are a peace-loving nation and want to live in synergy with our neighbours. Our next-gen tech weapons were so advanced now that we made the operation possible without any civilian fatalities.' Qureshi emphasised that the mission reflected a whole-of-nation approach involving the government and armed forces. Commander Deosthalee outlined the Navy's role. 'The Navy was battle-ready. We managed the trade routes to stabilise the economy and also ensured deterrence, as a dual job. We also protected the maritime borders as there were anti-national elements that entered in the past. Being part in this mission is a matter of pride and honour.' She described naval warfare as '360 degrees of uncertainty with no room for error in the middle of the endless sea without borders,' adding, 'When we strike, we strike in a manner that the enemy would remember forever.' The officers also credited local citizens for their role in rescue efforts after the Pahalgam attack, recalling the bravery shown despite the loss of Navy officer Vinay Narwal. On the preparedness of the armed forces, Singh said they were in 'offence mode.' Qureshi revealed that Pakistan had sent 300–400 drones, both armed and unarmed. 'They sent unarmed drones to scan India's weapon and defence capability around the Line of Control and the international border. But the Army Air Defence successfully disabled their attempts,' she said. Highlighting women's participation, Qureshi noted that over 100 women are involved in Operation Sindoor, trained on par with their male counterparts. 'This enabled them to handle the operations seamlessly.' Singh added, 'A weapon or a fighter aircraft doesn't distinguish between males and females.'

Sarang condemns ‘I-Day Pakistan' hashtag from Youth Congress account
Khargone: State cooperative department minister and Khargone district in-charge, Vishvas Sarang, on Friday alleged that an Independence Day message on Facebook page of Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress carried a hashtag — 'Independence Day Pakistan. ' The message was apparently deleted soon after the controversy began. Talking to mediapersons after flag hoisting in Khargone, Sarang said, "Rahul Gandhi and Congress always talk as if they are Pakistan-loving people. Gandhi, who opposed Operation Sindoor and questioned surgical strike, is shining up his politics by speaking language of China and Pakistan and defames India after going abroad. Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress social media chairman Devendra Bairagi, told TOI, "On Friday morning, the official Facebook account of Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress was hacked by anti-social elements in which objectionable posts were made. This incident was an attempt to disrupt the activities and communication of the organisation." He said, "Our IT team took immediate action and re-secured the account, and at present, the page is completely safe and is operating normally." A formal complaint in this regard has been given to the Delhi office. The cyber cell will also be informed for an in-depth investigation of this matter, he added.
