Ravichandran Ashwin and Dindigul Dragons cleared of ball tampering allegations after TNPL finds no evidence

Minta day ago

Ravichandran Ashwin, former India offspinner, and his team Dindigul Dragons have been cleared by the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) from the ball-tampering charges. Earlier, Siechem Madurai Panthers accused Dindigul of using towels treated with chemicals to alter the ball's condition during the match in Salem on June 14, 2025.
Shijit Chandran, Madurai's coach lodged a complaint, stating, 'The ball's condition deteriorated rapidly during our innings, affecting our batsmen's performance. You can hear the sound of every shot our batters played after the powerplay, which were as if they were hitting hard stone instead of a cricket ball.'
The complaint, originally sent to Madurai's CEO Pooja Damodaran and later forwarded to the TNPL, further alleged, 'We are of the view that the Dindigul Dragons team used foreign substances to alter the ball's condition, including using special towels with a pre-applied roughening agent, which is unacceptable and against the spirit of the game, and amounts to cheating.'
TNPL CEO Prasanna Kannan announced that no evidence supported the claims. 'The towels in question were TNCA-issued and equally available to both teams,' Kannan stated.
'The Playing Control Team, including umpires and the match referee, maintained full oversight of the ball throughout the match. No concerns were raised during play, and no verifiable evidence has been provided. The claims appear speculative and post-facto in nature.'
Kannan also noted procedural violations by Madurai, as their complaint was filed over 24 hours after the match and not directly to the TNCA honorary secretary, rendering it 'inadmissible.' However, in the interest of 'transparency and fairness,' the TNPL reviewed the matter after forwarding it to the honorary secretary and Dindigul.
Madurai has until 3 PM on June 17, 2025, to submit credible evidence, such as video, photographic, or testimonial material, for an Independent Commission of Enquiry. Failure to provide proof could lead to sanctions under the TNCA's code of conduct and operational rules.
In the match in question, Dindigul Dragons chased down Madurai's 151 in under 13 overs, led by openers R Ashwin and Shivam Singh.
The defending champions, who won their first TNPL title last season, secured their second victory in TNPL 2025, showcasing their dominance.

Ravichandran Ashwin receives clean chit in ball-tampering charges in TNPL

Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been cleared of ball-tampering allegations made during a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2025 match involving his team, Dindigul Dragons, and the Siechem Madurai Panthers. The charges stemmed from Madurai's accusation that foreign substances were used to alter the condition of the ball during their clash in Salem on June 14. However, after a comprehensive internal review, TNPL officials confirmed that there was no breach of rules or evidence of malpractice. Ashwin, who captains defending champions Dindigul Dragons, played a key role in his side's dominant victory in that match, partnering Shivam Singh in a successful chase. Madurai Panthers raise concerns over ball condition The controversy began when the Siechem Madurai Panthers submitted a formal complaint, claiming the ball had deteriorated unusually during their innings. Coach Shijit Chandran alleged that the Dindigul players may have used chemically treated towels to tamper with the ball. He noted that the batters experienced difficulty after the powerplay, describing the sound at contact as similar to hitting "a stone instead of a cricket ball". The complaint was initially directed to the Madurai franchise's CEO before reaching TNPL authorities. TNPL officials find no wrongdoing Responding to the complaint, TNPL CEO Prasanna Kannan dismissed the accusations after reviewing match-day reports. He clarified that the towels in question were standard issue from the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) and available to both teams. According to him, match officials, including the umpires and referee, monitored the ball consistently and had raised no concerns during play. He described the complaint as speculative and lacking any verifiable proof. Kannan also offered Madurai the option to escalate the matter, requesting them to provide concrete video, photographic or testimonial evidence by June 17 if they sought an independent investigation. Ashwin-led Dindigul stays focused amid noise Despite the off-field drama, Ashwin's Dindigul Dragons continued their strong title defence. The side chased down a target of 151 in under 13 overs, thanks to an explosive start from openers Ashwin and Shivam Singh. With back-to-back wins under their belt, the Dragons look well on course for another deep TNPL campaign.

R Ashwin of ball tampering charges, TNPL warns disciplinary action for ‘baseless or defamatory allegations'

Ravichandran Ashwin and his Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) side Dindigul Dragons have been cleared of ball-tampering by the league. It also gave the Madurai Panthers, who made the accusation, the option of requesting an independent enquiry into the incident while warning them that they will face disciplinary action if their allegations turn out to be baseless. Madurai had alleged that Dindigul used towels treated with chemicals that resulted in the ball getting heavier and produced metallic sound when it came into contact with the bat. 'The towels in question were TNCA-issued and equally available to both teams,' the TNPL CEO Prasanna Kannan said in a statement. 'The Playing Control Team-including umpires and the match referee-maintained full oversight of the ball throughout the match. No concerns were raised during play, and no verifiable evidence has been provided. The claims appear speculative and post-facto in nature.' The match in question started after a brief delay following a short downpour in Salem, following which Madurai batted first and made 150/8 in 20 overs, which Dindigul overhauled in 12.3 overs and 9 wickets to spare. Ashwin had gone wicketless with the ball before scoring 49 as an opener. The tournament itself has been hampered by rain as it coincides with the monsoon season in Tamil Nadu. Factoring in the damp conditions, The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association provides towels to each of the franchises and players are allowed to use it to dry the ball only in front of the umpires. 'They have to dry the ball only using the towels provided by TNPL. And every time the ball is hit for a six or immediately after a dismissal and over-break, umpires regularly check the ball and they didn't find any issue with the ball during the said match,' Kannan had earlier told the Indian Express. If the franchise still wants to pursue the matter, the TNPL said that they can go for an independent enquiry but a formal request for the same has to be raised by 3pm IST on Tuesday. 'Should the franchise possess credible and verifiable evidence, they may submit a formal request for an Independent Commission of Enquiry by 3 PM on 17th June, along with supporting material (video, photographic, or testimonial),' it said. It then stated: 'TNCA cautions that baseless or defamatory allegations may lead to disciplinary action under the TNCA Code of Conduct and Operational Rules.'
