Portion of 78 highway in Imperial Valley closed after alfalfa spill catches fire
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Both directions of the 78 highway in Imperial Valley were closed Monday afternoon after alfalfa plants spilled and caught fire.
Fire crews were battling the fire that started around 4 p.m. Monday on SR-78, just east of Midway Well, near the Arizona border.
Caltrans posted a traffic alert that both directions of SR-78 were closed as of 4:10 p.m. Monday because of the fire.

Caltrans crews continue work on desert, mountain highways in San Bernardino County
Caltrans will continue its road improvement project on state routes in Hesperia and the San Bernardino Mountains. Road work will be done from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Monday, June 9, through Friday, June 13, depending on weather conditions or availability of materials. Slurry seal, traffic striping and pavement marker work will be completed in the following locations: East and westbound SR-138 from Route 18 junction to Summit Valley Road towards Hesperia. East and westbound SR-189 from Route 18 to Route 173. One of two lanes will remain open, with alternating lane closures on the highways. Commuters are reminded to reduce speed in and around the work zone and be advised that weather and/or other factors may affect the construction schedule. Tornado watch, flash flood warnings issued for DC, Maryland, Virginia
WASHINGTON - A tornado watch has been issued for parts of the D.C. area as severe thunderstorms are expected to move through the area. Tornado watches are in effect until 10 p.m. Sunday night in the following areas: Fauquier County Prince William County Fairfax County Arlington County City of Alexandria City of Fredericksburg City of Fairfax Stafford County City of Manassas Charles County Anne Arundel County Frederick County Montgomery County Prince Georges County District of Columbia Flash flood warnings are in effect for Page and Shenandoah County in VA until 9:00pm Sunday evening. Strong thunderstorms with dangerous winds and heavy rainfall are expected Sunday evening. Isolated hail, and a couple tornadoes are possible with wind gusts up to 65+mph. The highest threat for severe weather is between 4:30 and 9:30 p.m., according to FOX 5 Meteorologist Mike Thomas.
