How Google's AI mode works as new feature set to hit UK browsers this week
Google is the web browser that many of us rely on when we are wanting to look up new information or find the best activities to take part in while travelling abroad. While the popular web browser can collate an endless variety of information in a matter of seconds, an upcoming update is set to make this experience even smoother.
Set to launch in the UK this week, Google's smart AI mode has been created to make browsing the web a more fluid and faster experience. For those who struggle to find the answers to complicated questions, this new feature will become your saving grace.
First launched in the US back in May, the new AI mode will allow web users to find detailed answers to all of their queries no matter how complicated, unlike the current AI overview service, reports the Express. Most of the UK is expected to have access to this handy feature by the end of the week.
So what differentiates this new sparkly AI mode in comparison to the AI overview feature that many people in the UK have now become acquainted with?
The main point of the new feature is to provide answers to more detailed and conversational questions. Therefore, web users can be more specific about what they are looking for instead of supplying a broad question.
For example, instead of writing "What to do in Glasgow?", web browsers can instead write "Things to do in Glasgow this weekend with friends. We are big music lovers, love exploring the wilderness and enjoy a variety of food."
With this more detailed question, Google will collate a full query search that will include a detailed overview, links to websites and location maps so travellers can easily plan their next trip.
And if you end up having another question, Google users can easily add another search to the question instead of having to start a whole new conversation.
While a useful feature for any queries you have, Google says that this new service will flourish when asked exploratory questions or given complicated tasks. For those wanting to plan a trip, get a further understanding of a confusing 'how-to' or compare two tech products, the AI mode should provide a helpful solution.
Google explained: "We've found that early users of AI Mode are asking questions that are two or three times the length of traditional search queries."
UK Google users will be able to identify when they have access to the new feature as an AI Mode box will appear in your browser window. From here you can easily ask Google questions through your voice, text or camera.
Vice president of product management at Google, Hema Budaraju said: "Starting this week, we are excited to bring AI Mode to the UK. AI Mode expands on what AI overviews can do; it has got more advanced reasoning, thinking and multimodal capabilities from Gemini 2.5.
"You can ask nuanced questions, things that would have taken multiple, multiple, multiple searches before, can actually be one prompt."
While some people may be a bit wary of this new feature as rival companies have experienced issues with AI providing the wrong information, Google is confident that this won't become an issue.
Bubaraju said: "I think for us it's really important to keep the bar quality of Google search. We have 25 years of experience in building stronger ranking systems, strong quality systems, as well as safety systems.
"We do extensive internal testing to find challenges ourselves. And all of that is learning that goes into building up these features and these new technologies.
"And as with any early-stage AI product, we won't always get it right, but we are committed to continuous improvement."

Rollercoaster chaser could still set record despite Storm Floris setback
Dean Stokes, 36, originally organised a trip to go on 120 rollercoasters in 32 theme parks in 16 days across the UK, travelling alongside his friend and former colleague Simon Fasolo, 44. Mr Stokes, from Brighton, East Sussex, worked for five years at Google before leaving the corporate ladder to set up his own business delivering technology training, having grown tired of being unable to try new things. The former UK head of Google for Education believes people should be encouraged to do what they love and has taken time away from work to complete and document the challenge on social media. Dean Stokes with his wife Caroline (Dean Stokes/PA) But he has since run into problems, with Storm Floris closing several theme parks less than a third of the way into his journey. Despite the route not going to plan, Mr Stokes has been contacted by Guinness World Records, who say it could still be possible to set a new record. He said: 'We were scuppered by Storm Floris, as two of the parks we visited did not have coasters operating because of wind and rain. 'The day I was in north Devon, we were meant to get on eight rollercoasters, but I only managed one. 'Most of the rides were shut down for safety reasons, which is understandable but it was really frustrating when we got there. 'I originally didn't reach out to the Guinness World Records because I just hadn't had the time in planning all the trip and I'm not really doing this to break a record, I'm doing it for fun. 'But two days ago, they emailed me asking if I'm interested in it, and I said yes – I would love to hang a world record at my office and have it in the background of my video calls. 'So, despite Storm Floris setting us back on the original plan, we could still break a record. We're just working out what the details are. It may be something like most rollercoasters ridden in a week – I'm trying to work with them to figure out what's a good record that we can set.' Mr Stokes says he has been overwhelmed by the support both on social media and in person at the theme parks. He and Mr Fasolo have been recognised by several fellow thrill-seekers and ride operators. Mr Stokes even had a follower join him for the first ride, the Pinball X at Flamingo Park in Hastings, East Sussex. He said: 'Before Storm Floris, it was going really well. Someone was even there to meet me in Hastings – a kid called Jack and his family. 'I was so surprised when I turned up and there was someone there – he said 'I'm here to ride this with you'. 'Jack said they were planning on going to a different theme park but decided to come to Hastings to join me, which was lovely. 'One of the ride operators recognised me from the videos on social media as well, which has all been so surprising but really amazing. 'I've been going live on TikTok, so when I drive quite I'm often doing quick livestreams talking to people that are joining on there. 'We're starting to build a bit of a crowd for Thorpe Park, which would be the last park of the trip – I think we're going to get a little bit of a group together to ride my last ride together which is fun.' Mr Stokes maintains that it is important to encourage people to follow their passion and not to worry about what others think when pursuing something they enjoy. He said: 'The big reason that I'm doing it is that I really think that people should just get out there and do more of what they love. 'We spend too much time these days feeling embarrassed about things that we want to do, or not pushing ourselves to do something because we're worried about whatever people might think. 'In fact, being confident to go out and do what you want is super important.' A spokesperson for Guinness World Records said they 'would like to wish Dean the best of luck in his exciting rollercoaster record attempt and look forward to receiving his application and evidence'. There is no current record-holder for the most rollercoasters ridden in a week, and Mr Stokes has been set a target of 30 to claim the inaugural title. For the purposes of his attempt, a rollercoaster is defined as a ride which features a car or cars which run along a fixed 'linear' track or rails. This includes so-called 'kiddie coasters', but excludes theme park trains and 'wet' rides, such as log flumes.

Google commits $1 billion for AI training at US universities
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Alphabet's (GOOGL.O), opens new tab Google on Wednesday announced a three-year, $1 billion commitment to provide artificial intelligence training and tools to U.S. higher education institutions and nonprofits. More than 100 universities have signed on to the initiative so far, including some of the nation's largest public university systems such as Texas A&M and the University of North Carolina. Participating schools may receive cash funding and resources, such as cloud computing credits towards AI training for students as well as research on AI-related topics. The billion-dollar figure also includes the value of paid AI tools, such as an advanced version of the Gemini chatbot, which Google will give to college students for free. Google hopes to expand the program to every accredited nonprofit college in the U.S. and is discussing similar plans in other countries, Senior Vice President James Manyika said in an interview. He declined to specify how much Google is earmarking in direct funds to external institutions relative to footing its own cloud and subscription bills. The announcement comes as rivals like OpenAI, opens new tab, Anthropic and Amazon (AMZN.O), opens new tab have made similar pushes around AI in education as the technology pervades society. Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab in July pledged $4 billion to bolster AI in education globally. By evangelizing their products to students, tech firms further stand to win business deals once those users enter the workforce. A growing body of research has mapped concerns around AI's role in education, from enabling cheating to eroding critical thinking, prompting some schools to consider bans. Manyika said Google had not faced resistance from administrators since it began to plot its education initiative earlier this year, but "many more questions" about AI-related concerns remain. "We're hoping to learn together with these institutions about how best to use these tools," he said, adding that the insights could help shape future product decisions.
