
Emm-negative: A new blood type found in only one person
In June 2025, the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) officially recognized the world's 48th human blood group system: Emm-negative. Informally referred to as 'Gwada negative,' after the Guadeloupean heritage of the only known individual with this blood type, the classification is unique. As French biologist Thierry Peyrard noted, 'She is the only person on the planet compatible with herself.'
The discovery dates back to 2011, when a 54-year-old woman underwent routine pre-operative screening. An unidentified antibody in her blood puzzled doctors. At the time, without the advanced genetic tools available today, the case was archived. Nearly a decade later, next-generation DNA sequencing uncovered a previously unknown mutation affecting the gene responsible for producing the EMM antigen, a molecule present on almost all human red blood cells.
The absence of this high-incidence antigen posed a significant challenge in transfusion medicine. Confirming the rarity and clinical implications of this finding required six additional years of peer-reviewed research. In June 2025, ISBT delegates in Milan unanimously agreed to classify Emm as a new and independent blood group system, now officially known as ISBT042.
Most people recognize their blood type by its ABO classification and Rh factor—positive or negative. However, red blood cells are adorned with dozens of other markers, or antigens, made from proteins, lipids, or sugars. The ISBT categorizes these into blood group systems, including the well-known Rh system and lesser-known groups like Vel.
The EMM antigen is considered a high-frequency antigen, meaning more than 99.99% of the global population has it. When this antigen is absent, as in the case of the Paris patient, the immune system may react aggressively to donor blood, potentially causing life-threatening hemolytic shock.
For the patient, this rare blood type means extreme caution. Any transfusion must be precisely matched to avoid immune complications. Her only option is autologous donation—banking her own blood ahead of planned medical procedures. This mirrors the situation for people with the Bombay blood group, another ultra-rare type first identified in 1952. While Bombay patients can sometimes find compatible donors globally, no such network yet exists for Emm-negative individuals.
The breakthrough came with next-generation sequencing, which allowed researchers to identify the exact gene deletion responsible for the missing EMM antigen. This technology, combined with expansive DNA databases, is rapidly accelerating the discovery of rare blood types—at least five new systems have been classified since 2012.
Rare blood types present serious logistical challenges. In the U.S., a unit of red blood cells typically costs around $225, excluding testing. For rare units, especially those deep-frozen for long-term storage, costs can soar to ten times that amount. Emergency situations involving rare blood types can incur thousands more in international shipping and delays that jeopardize lives.
The American Rare Donor Program already tracks about 100,000 individuals with uncommon antigen profiles. The addition of Emm-negative highlights the need for further expansion.
In response, French researchers have begun screening archived blood samples from Caribbean populations, hoping to identify additional Emm-negative donors. Even a small donor pool could provide essential reserves for future transfusion needs and emergencies.
In the long term, scientists are exploring lab-grown red blood cells made from stem cells engineered to match rare antigen profiles. Clinical trials are underway, with hopes of broader application within the next decade.
For now, the Paris woman who helped reveal the Emm-negative blood group continues her daily life — marked by a routine existence, yet with an extraordinary and singular designation on her medical record.

The recent auction of a Martian meteorite -- for a record-grabbing $5.3 million at Sotheby's New York -- has sparked questions over its provenance and renewed debate over who gets to claim rocks fallen from the heavens. For American paleontologist Paul Sereno, who has worked closely with Niger's authorities for years, all signs suggest that the stone left the country 'illicitly.' 'Everybody's anonymous -- from the person who found it, the dealers, the guy who bought it, everybody's anonymous,' he told AFP, making no secret of his frustration. 'If they had put on baseball gloves and caught the meteorite as was hurtling towards Earth before it landed in any country, they could claim it... but I'm sorry, it landed there. It belongs to Niger,' he said. The 54-pound Martian meteorite NWA 16788, the largest known piece of Mars ever discovered on Earth, is displayed during a Sotheby's auction preview in New York. 'We should respect it' Laws governing the ownership of meteorites vary based on their point of impact. In the United States, for example, if a rock falls on private land, the property owners have ownership rights. In Niger, however, a law governs 'national cultural patrimony,' which includes rare mineralogical specimens, according to Matthieu Gounelle, a professor at France's National History Museum, and his father Max Gounelle, a French university professor. Both are specialists in regulations governing the collection and sale of meteorites. 'In our opinion, there is no doubt that meteorites should be included among the rare mineralogical specimens' protected by Nigerien law, they told AFP. Beyond the legal battle and the possible involvement of a trafficking network, the sale of the meteorite also raises science ethics questions. The rock, named NWA 16788, has unique scientific research value. Much larger than other Martian meteorites that have been recorded to date, it offers a unique insight into the geological history of the Red Planet. Like other Martian meteorites, it is believed to have been ejected into space when an asteroid slammed into Mars. 'This is nature's heritage. In many ways, it's world heritage, and it's telling us things about the cosmos. We should respect it,' Sereno said. Potatoes can be healthy, but cooking holds the key: Kuwaiti researcher
KUWAIT: A landmark scientific study by researchers from Harvard University, Cambridge University, and other leading institutions worldwide—featuring Kuwaiti researcher Dr Hala Al-Eissa with support from the Kuwait Heart Association—has revealed that the way potatoes are cooked, rather than the potatoes themselves, is the key factor influencing their link to type 2 diabetes. Earlier research hinted at a possible association between potato consumption and diabetes risk but often lacked details on cooking methods or the impact of replacing potatoes with other foods. This new study, published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), analyzed decades of dietary data, distinguishing between preparation styles and substitution choices. The findings show that eating French fries three times a week is linked to a 20 percent higher risk of type 2 diabetes compared to consuming them less than once a week. In contrast, boiled, baked, or mashed potatoes showed no significant risk increase. Researchers explained that the difference lies in preparation: baking, boiling, or cooking with the skin on are healthier methods, preserving nutrients such as fiber, vitamin C, potassium, and vitamin B6. French fries, however, are typically cooked at high temperatures in unhealthy oils and salted heavily, creating harmful compounds. Notably, replacing three weekly servings of French fries with whole grains—such as whole wheat, oats, brown rice, or quinoa—cut the risk of diabetes by up to 19 percent. Substituting all potatoes, including non-fried varieties, with whole grains reduced the risk by 4 percent. 'Our results confirm that potatoes can be part of a healthy diet if prepared properly,' said Dr Al-Eissa, Assistant Professor at Kuwait University's School of Public Health and researcher at Harvard's Department of Nutrition. 'French fries, however, remain a choice that should be limited as much as possible.' Professor Walter Willett, who supervised the study, stressed that dietary guidelines should move beyond broad food categories. 'Not all carbohydrates—and not even all potatoes—are equal,' he said. 'Preparation and substitution matter greatly when shaping public health policies.' The research analyzed data from more than 205,000 participants over nearly 40 years, making it one of the most comprehensive investigations into potatoes and diabetes risk. It was funded by respected bodies including the US National Institutes of Health, the British Medical Council, and, for the first time, the Kuwait Heart Association. Researchers believe that the Kuwait Heart Association's partnership with global institutions like Harvard will pave the way for further collaborations, advancing nutrition-focused research and tackling chronic diseases in Kuwait.

Sudan refugees face cholera outbreak
TAWILA, Sudan: In the cholera-stricken refugee camps of western Sudan, every second is infected by fear. Faster than a person can boil water over an open flame, the flies descend and everything is contaminated once more. Cholera is ripping through the camps of Tawila in Darfur, where hundreds of thousands of people have been left with nothing but the water they can boil, to serve as both disinfectant and medicine. 'We mix lemon in the water when we have it and drink it as medicine,' said Mona Ibrahim, who has been living for two months in a hastily-erected camp in Tawila. 'We have no other choice,' she told AFP, seated on the bare ground. Adam is one of nearly half a million people who sought shelter in and around Tawila, from the nearby besieged city of El-Fasher and the Zamzam displacement camp in April, following attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), at war with Sudan's regular army since April 2023. The first cholera cases in Tawila were detected in early June in the village of Tabit, about 25 kilometers south, said Sylvain Penicaud, a project coordinator for French charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF). 'After two weeks, we started identifying cases directly in Tawila, particularly in the town's displacement camps,' he told AFP. In the past month, more than 1,500 cases have been treated in Tawila alone, he said, while the UN's children agency says around 300 of the town's children have contracted the disease since April. Across North Darfur state, more than 640,000 children under the age of five are at risk, according to UNICEF. By July 30, there were 2,140 infections and at least 80 deaths across Darfur, UN figures show. Cholera is a highly contagious bacterial infection that causes severe diarrhoea and spreads through contaminated water and food. Causing rapid dehydration, it can kill within hours if left untreated, yet it is preventable and usually easily treatable with oral rehydration solutions. More severe cases require intravenous fluids and antibiotics. Ibrahim Adam Mohamed Abdallah, UNICEF's executive director in Tawila, told AFP his team 'advises people to wash their hands with soap, clean the blankets and tarps provided to them and how to use clean water'. But in the makeshift shelters of Tawila, patched together from thin branches, scraps of plastic and bundles of straw, even those meager precautions are out of reach. Insects cluster on every barely washed bowl, buzzing over the scraps of already meager meals. Haloum Ahmed, who has been suffering from severe diarrhea for three days, said 'there are so many flies where we live'. Water is often fetched from nearby natural sources—often contaminated—or from one of the few remaining shallow, functional wells. It 'is extremely worrying,' said MSF's Penicaud, but 'those people have no (other) choice'. Sitting beside a heap of unwashed clothes on the dusty ground, Ibrahim said no one around 'has any soap'. 'We don't have toilets—the children relieve themselves in the open,' she added. 'We don't have food. We don't have pots. No blankets—nothing at all,' said Fatna Essa, another 50-year-old displaced woman in Tawila. The UN has repeatedly warned of food insecurity in Tawila, where aid has trickled in, but nowhere near enough to feed the hundreds of thousands who go hungry. - AFP
