Duncan Delport a happy man after moving to Alberton

The Citizen18-07-2025
Duncan Delport is a happy man after moving to Alberton to further his rugby career.
Delport, formerly with the Randburg-based Pirates Rugby Club, is no stranger to club rugby circles in the country.
He has played over 100 games for the Pirates.
'Achieving the 100th cap was great because not many players reach that milestone,' Delport was quoted as saying at the time.
His love for rugby started at the age of eight while he was a learner at Laerskool Theo Wassenaar, steadily progressing during his high school years at Hoërskool President in Johannesburg.
'Now that I am getting older and since moving to the Alberton Rugby Club (ARC), my focus is purely on enjoying the game, having fun, and appreciating every moment on the field,' Delport told the Alberton Record.
'I chose to stay involved in rugby after leaving Pirates because the ARC is closer to home, which makes it easier to stay connected with the community.'
Delport acknowledges James Small as a significant influence in his rugby career.
'Being coached by and learning from James Small was a great privilege. His guidance shaped me both on and off the field.'
On his plans for Alberton, Delport said: 'I want to give back to the local rugby community by sharing my knowledge and experiences with younger players at the club and in schools.'
Besides rugby, Delport participates in local charity initiatives. He also wants to contribute to ARC's growth, build more connections within the community, and eventually pursue a coaching role.

Hawies Fourie shuffles Boland Cavaliers pack for crucial Currie Cup clash against Lions

Boland prop Wayrin Losper is set to play his 50th match for the Cavaliers on Sunday against the Lions in the Currie Cup. Image: BackpagePix Boland Cavaliers coach Hawies Fourie had to rejig his forwards pack following injuries to crucial players as they prepare for a tough battle with the high-flying Lions on Sunday in the Currie Cup. Fourie made changes to his loose trio and in the front row for the clash in Wellington (3pm kick-off), with No 8 Sibusiso Sangweni and flanker Gift Dlamini both suffering injuries, alongside loosehead Lamla Nunu. Dlamini's injury is particularly severe, having broken his leg during a tight encounter against Griquas. His absence for the rest of the season is a significant blow to the Wellington-based team. The hard-working Sangweni had a strong showing in Kimberley and played through his injury as he looked to get his team over the line. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Unfortunately, the Wellington side suffered a 48-39 loss, but they are charged up for the duel in front of their home fans. However, the challenge posed by the Lions, who have shown prowess on the field, is daunting. The Cavaliers understand that they need to bolster their set pieces and strengthen their defensive line if they hope to stymie the visitors. After struggling up front in both their matches, Fourie will hope the changes to the pack do not affect his team too much. Loosehead prop Wayrin Losper, a former Varsity Cup star, will pack down in his 50th match, and his performance with hooker Sydney Tobias and tighthead Dayan van der Westerhuizen will be heavily scrutinised. Additionally, the Cavaliers will see the debut of veteran scrumhalf Louis Schreuder, returning from injury to replace the dynamic Chriswill September, who now finds himself on the bench. Should Mthokozisi Gumede be called upon as a substitute, he will also make his debut. Losper says it will be a massive honour to run out in his 50th match for the Cavaliers after joining the team in 2019. 'The dream was always to play rugby professionally and now that I am playing in my 50th, it feels like I have lived that dream and things can only progress from here on,' the loosehead said.

Tapelo Xoki highlights team spirit as Orlando Pirates aim for success this season

That outing didn't only clarify their intentions of defending their trophy and winning it for a fourth time in succession, but it also showed the understanding between the players. Pirates started their domestic 2025/26 campaign on a high note last Saturday as they beat Polokwane City 2-0 in the MTN8 quarter-final at Orlando Stadium. Orlando Pirates defender Tapelo Xoki says selflessness within the team is what made it possible for everyone to blend together, and strive to thrive last season. New players, such as Sipho Mbule, Sihle Nduli and Oswin Appollis, made their full starts for the team, and hardly looked out of place. As a result, Appollis scored on debut with a well taken goal early into the first half and subsequently walked away with the Player of the Match award. So with the Betway Premiership set to get underway this weekend, as Pirates will host Sekhukhune United on Saturday at 5.30pm, they are expected to be at their best yet again. Xoki knows what's expected of them in the league and in the CAF Champions League after falling short in both competitions last season which is why they want to make up for lost time. 'Every season at Pirates, you play to win the league, and the other trophies. So, it's not different this season,' Xoki explained. 'We know those two (Premiership and Champions League) have eluded us for a long time, and we would like to correct that. We know, though, that it won't be easy and we would like to take things game by game. 'We want to remain humble, and keep working hard so that we can be able to achieve those goals during the course of the season.' Xoki is leading from the front with being selfless. Having led the team for most part of the season, he was not voted as the club captain after the departure of Innocent Maela but he's backing new leader Nkosinathi Sibisi. 'It was a collective group decision. I didn't take it badly. Sibisi is the rightful captain for the club,' said Xoki who was voted as the vice captain alongside youngster Mbekezeli Mbokazi. 'He (Sibisi) has done well, and he's the Defender of The Season. He captained the national team recently. So, there's no bad blood between the group, and he's the right guy to lead the team. 'Thus, our duty now is to support him and be there for him. We have a selfless group, it's never about an individual - myself or personal goals - but what's best for the group.'

Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou wants to prove doubters wrong

Doubting Thomases abound and Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou is ready to knuckle down and prove them wrong. He started his tenure with an impressive MTN8 quarterfinal win over Polokwane City last weekend and his attention has shifted to the start of the Betway Premiership with Sekhukhune United at Orlando Stadium on Saturday. The Buccaneers go into this season's campaign under pressure to take the fight to Mamelodi Sundowns who are on a record-extending eight successive league championship wins. Though they have been impressive in cup competition over the past two years where they won five, Pirates have not laid their hands on the league trophy since 2012 and fans are desperate. 'When I finished played overseas, the first thing was to come back to Morocco. From there I went on to work in Benin, DRC, Algeria and now I am here in South Africa,' he said. Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou is aware there are those who doubt him. WATCH full press conference ➡️➡️➡️ — Mahlatse Mphahlele (@BraMahlatse) August 7, 2025 'When you are a coach, you start with small clubs where you must prove your competencies. Sometimes you cannot just get to a big club like Orlando Pirates which is where I am at the moment.' Ouaddou has taken over from Spaniard Jose Riveiro who endeared himself to the hard to please Pirates faithful by helping them to five trophies in three seasons with the club. 'Some people can be doubtful about me, but it is up to me to prove them (wrong). Unfortunately, I cannot change anything (about what they think of me). 'When I stopped as a player to become a coach, my dream was to come back to the continent because I lived for more thana 45 years in France.' Ouaddou said during his playing career with Stade Rennais, Valenciennes FC, AS Nancy in France, Fulham in England, Olympiacos in Greece and Qatar SC, he always had to prove himself. 'It is funny because I started as a professional football player in a small club where I signed a professional contract as an 18 year old. My dream was to move to bigger clubs and to play in the Champions League. You have to be ambitious. 'As an African coach, you have to prove yourself more than anybody else all the time. I was a football player in France and as an African and I had to prove myself ten times than locals to be a regular in the team. 'I played at Fulham and Olympiacos and it is a lot of work. You have to prove yourself many times and it is the same for as a coach. What is funny is that when you come back to the continent, there is still this thing that you have to prove yourself. 'I have no problem with that, I am happy to be at Orlando Pirates and I thank them for giving me this opportunity. Let's see what I am able to do at the end of the season. 'I hope to win the title with the help of my players and prove to everybody that I am able to reach that level.'
