If You Want Bumrah To Play All Five Tests...: BGT Winning Captain Shares Key Advice For Indian Captains On Managing Ace Pacer
Staying true to his plan, Bumrah featured in the first, third, and fourth Tests against Ben Stokes' England. His presence made a significant impact he picked up two five-wicket hauls at Headingley and Lord's, ending the series with 14 wickets. Bumrah was released from the squad on Day 2 of the final Test at the Oval, which India won in thrilling fashion by six runs.
Rahane, who led India to a memorable 2-1 Test series win in Australia in 2020-21, spoke highly of Bumrah's decision-making and communication. On his YouTube channel, Rahane said:
'What I liked about the Bumrah situation was that he was pretty clear; he knew what he wanted to do before the series. He said, 'I'll play the first one, I won't play the second one, and then I'll play the third'. Great clarity for a captain. It shows that he has the courage to tell the captain and management to be really clear.'
He continued:
'It also shows that he is keeping the team ahead of himself. Sometimes it is not easy to do so when you are playing for India. As a player, when you are representing India, it's not easy. Sometimes players convey the same message to the team, and then they get dropped.'
Rahane didn't stop there he also had some valuable advice for head coach Gautam Gambhir, captain Shubman Gill, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. He suggested a smarter approach to managing Bumrah's workload if the team hopes to utilize him across all five Test matches in future series.
'If you want Bumrah to play all five Tests, then use him in smaller spells like 3 overs or 4 overs,' Rahane advised.
He further emphasized that Bumrah's unique bowling action puts additional stress on his body, making workload management essential.
'It just shows that he wanted the team to be well prepared even when he wasn't playing. Because of his unique action, there is a lot of load on his body.'
Rahane also touched on Bumrah's psychological impact on opposition teams, particularly England's aggressive "Bazball" approach.
'I think England were wary of Bumrah when he was playing; 'Bazball' didn't come out to the full extent. When Bumrah wasn't there, they played a little freely. It is important to use him properly; you have to give him the luxury to get the best out of him,' he added.
The gripping five-Test series between India and England concluded in a 2-2 draw. India secured victories in the second and fifth Tests, while England emerged victorious in the first and third. The fourth Test ended in a draw, highlighting just how evenly matched the series was.
As India continues to navigate its transition phase under a new leadership group, Rahane's insights could prove valuable in ensuring Bumrah remains a consistent and potent force in Test cricket. Ahead of the five-Test series, Bumrah had already informed the BCCI management, captain Shubman Gill, and head coach Gautam Gambhir that he would participate in only three matches. He featured in the first, third, and fourth Tests against Ben Stokes' England side.

BCCI puts ball into Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma's court on ODI future; ‘if they have something in mind, they would tell…'
Following the completition of the England Test series, the chatter around Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's ODI future once again came to the fore. The speculations regarding the Indian stalwart's future in 50-over cricket started recently when a Dainik Jagran report stated that duo might retire after their away series against Australia in October. Having already retired from Tests and T20Is, both Rohit and Kohli are only available for ODIs for India. Based on the report, if the Indian duo wants to prolong their career - particularly play in the 2027 ODI World Cup - its compulsory for both Rohit and Kohli to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy later in the year to stay in shape for selection. However, according to a PTI report, the BCCI is not thinking about Rohit and Kohli's immediate future but the 2026 T20 World Cup and the Asia Cup 2025. 'Obviously, if they (Rohit and Kohli) have something in mind, they would tell the BCCI brass like they did before the England Test tour,' the news agency quoted a BCCI official, on conditions of anonymity. "But from an Indian team's perspective, the next big assignment is the T20 World Cup in February and preparations before that. The immediate focus will be on sending the best team for the Asia Cup T20 tournament, hoping all players are fit and available," the source added. The last time Kohli and Rohit played for India was during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which the Men in Blue won for the second time in history. The Indian team was led by Rohit, who defeated New Zealand in the final played in Dubai.

Rohit, Kohli should continue in ODIs if they perform: Sourav Ganguly
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Sunday feels Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should continue playing ODIs as long as they are performing, given their "phenomenal" record in the fifty-overs format. Reacting to media reports suggesting that the upcoming ODI series in Australia could be the last for the celebrated duo, Ganguly said he was not aware of any such development. "I'm not aware of this, can't comment on this, he remarked when asked about the speculation. Ganguly however stressed that performance should be the deciding factor in prolonging their careers. "It's difficult to say. Whoever does well will play. If they do well, they should continue. Kohli's one-day record is phenomenal, even Rohit Sharma's. Both of them are phenomenal in white-ball cricket, he said during AWL Agri Business Ltd Event. According to reports, the tour of Australia in October could mark the final ODI appearances for the two Indian greats Kohli and Rohit, who have already played their last in T20Is and Tests. The duo have so far remained non-committal on whether they are targeting the 2027 World Cup. India's ODI tour of Australia begins on October 19, with matches scheduled in Perth, Adelaide and Sydney, followed by three home ODIs against South Africa in December. The 2026 calendar features ODI series against New Zealand, Afghanistan, England, the West Indies, and another contest against New Zealand. On the upcoming T20 Asia Cup in Dubai from September 9, Ganguly said the Indian team woulb be the favourties, coming off a much-needed break after the gruelling five Tests in England. They are in the middle of a break. After the IPL, they played five Tests and now they will play the Asia Cup from September 9. "India are very strong, and if they are strong in red-ball cricket, they are even stronger in white-ball cricket. So, in my opinion, India are favourites, and beating them on those good Dubai wickets will be very tough. Asked about Shubman Gill's prospects as Test captain, Ganguly was in all praise for the young Indian Test skipper: He's India's Test captain, and his future is full of promise, he said. Ganguly further said he's all set for a second inning in cricket administration and would file nomination. "If members wish, will file nomination (for CAB president's post), added the former BCCI president, who was CAB president from mid-2015 to October 2019.
