MSU beat rival UM in 2021 despite Wolverines knowing 'almost every signal'
Beating your rival in a top 10 showdown is extremely tough to do and impressive to accomplish. Now imagine how much more difficult and notable that achievement is if your opponent "knew almost every signal the whole game." That's what Michigan State was apparently up against when they played Connor Stalions and the Wolverines in 2021.
Stalions has been back in the news this past week after TCU head coach Sonny Dykes shared that his staff was tipped off about Michigan's extensive sign stealing practice ahead of their 2022 College Football Playoff semifinal matchup with the Wolverines. That story hitting the news cycle didn't sit well with Stalions, who took to social media platform X early on Saturday morning to fire back at Dykes' comments. The full post on X from Stalions can be seen below:
The notable takeaway from Stalions' post for us Spartans, though, was the fact that he admitted to knowing "almost every signal the whole game" against Michigan State in both 2021 and 2022. The Spartans were led by Kenneth Walker III in 2021 to knock off the Wolverines but came up short in a road loss at Michigan in 2022.
Now, of course, Stalions admitting to having the signals of the Spartans is not technically against any rules. Sign stealing in college football is fine to do (and apparently done by many schools), but how you conduct sign stealing is what got Stalions and Michigan into hot water with the NCAA. The outcome from that investigation and potential penalties for the Wolverines have not yet been announced by the NCAA.
Regardless of how Stalions was able to know all of the Spartans' signals in those two games, its quite the advantage and statement to say he had that kind of knowledge -- which makes that 2021 victory for the Spartans even more impressive in my opinion. So while it's been nearly four years since Walker found the endzone five times to lead the Spartans past the Wolverines, the lore of that day continues to grow for Michigan State football and those who got to enjoy that fun afternoon in East Lansing, Mich.
In case you wanted to relive that fun Spartans' rivalry win over Stalions and the Wolverines, here is the highlights video below:

Sherrone Moore and the Michigan Wolverines are looking to get back to being a national championship contender, which all starts on the recruiting trail. Moore took over for Jim Harbaugh as Michigan's full-time head coach last season. He led the program to an 8-5 record. That record also included the huge upset on the road over Ohio State in the final game of the regular season. With the right moves in the recruiting and transfer portal markets, the Wolverines could be back in the hunt in the very near future. Deck has a chance to become a major playmaker for Michigan in the future. 247 Sports currently has the Wolverines' 2026 recruiting class ranked No. 9 in the nation. Paul Finebaum Shoots Down Tennessee Football Playoff Hopes at SEC Media Days
Paul Finebaum isn't buying the Tennessee hype heading into the 2025 college football season. Appearing on SEC Network during SEC Media Days on Wednesday, the longtime college football analyst was asked if the Volunteers will return to the College Football Playoff this season. His response left little room for interpretation. "I love fiction, and that is absolutely fiction," Finebaum said. "Tennessee is not making it back to the playoff. They lost Nico [Iamaleava]. They have Joey Aguilar, who went to App State, transferred to UCLA and then to Tennessee, all in what seemed like about half an hour. Tennessee will be good, but they're not good enough to make the playoff." Iamaleava, a former five-star quarterback and Citrus Bowl MVP, transferred to UCLA this past spring, leaving Tennessee with a major void under center. Joey Aguilar, who threw for over 3,700 yards at App State in 2023, eventually landed in Knoxville after a brief offseason stop at UCLA. While Aguilar brings experience, Finebaum isn't convinced the Vols can reload fast enough to contend again at the national level. Finebaum's skepticism is rooted in more than just the quarterback change. Tennessee is facing significant roster turnover this fall, with at least 15 former Vols now playing for other Power Four programs. Many of those departures will step into major roles elsewhere, and while Josh Heupel's team returns a strong defensive core, the offensive side tells a different story. Tennessee enters 2025 coming off a 10-win season and a top-12 finish under head coach Josh Heupel. Ohio State men's athletic program take home the 2024-25 Capital One Cup
For the first time since the award was established for the 2010-2011 athletics season, the Ohio State men's athletics programs have won the Capital One Cup, handed out annually to the best men's and women's Division I athletic programs. Ohio State won with a total score of 113.5 points, well ahead of second-place Penn State, which captured 82 points. Ohio State took home the title because of several top-ten finishes this past year, led by the first-place finish of the College Football Playoff-winning football team. Other top ten finishes include soccer (3rd), wrestling (5th), fencing (6th), tennis (6th), gymnastics (7th), and lacrosse (9th). 'I want to thank Capital One for its stewardship of this important program that ultimately honors student-athletes, coaches and the support staffs who take great pride in what they do,' Ross Bjork, Senior Vice President and Wolfe Foundation-Eugene Smith Endowed Athletics Director, said in a statement. 'We had a highly successful and memorable year on the field in 2024-25, a testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment to excellence that our student-athletes display. 'I continue to be inspired on a daily basis by the people who uphold and enhance Ohio State's long-standing tradition of excellence in everything that we do.' Finishing behind Ohio State and Penn State, and rounding out the top ten for the 2024-25 year include Florida (81 points), Texas (66), Cornell (64), Vermont (63), Notre Dame (62), LSU (60), North Dakota State (60), and Arkansas (58). 'We are happy to celebrate the Ohio State University men's athletics program for a fantastic year of competition, defined by dedication and resiliency," said Stephanie Mosley, Senior Director of Brand Sponsorships and Experiential Marketing at Capital One said in a statement. "We are proud to continue our Capital One Cup program, which has awarded over $5 million in student athlete scholarship fund donations.' The women's athletic program finished 38th in the Capital One Cup standings. And ... as a reminder, the entire Ohio State athletic department finished 8th in the Learfield Directors' Cup standings for this year.
