The Crown actor Josh O'Connor ‘in awe' of uncle living with early Alzheimer's

Independent16-05-2025

Josh O'Connor, who played Prince Charles in The Crown, has said he is 'in awe' of his uncle who is living with young-onset Alzheimer's disease.
The actor, who also starred in Challengers, is supporting his uncle Bernard Bunting's bid to raise £1 million for a new Rare Dementia Support Centre in London.
Former soldier Mr Bunting, 67, developed dementia symptoms around the age of 60 but was not diagnosed until three years ago.
On Sunday, he is setting off on a 4,200-mile bike ride round the coast of Britain for the National Brain Appeal to support the world's first rare dementia support centre, which will open next year in London.
More than 70,800 people in the UK are living with young-onset dementia, which occurs when the condition develops before the age of 65.
O'Connor said: 'I am in awe of my uncle Bernard for taking on this challenge and not letting his diagnosis hold him back.
'Knowing how determined he is, he will push through physical boundaries to complete this immense challenge and reach his fundraising goals.'
Mr Bunting's father was the sculptor John Bunting and his sister is the journalist and author Madeleine Bunting.
Mr Bunting is currently taking part in a clinical trial led by Professor Catherine Mummery, head of clinical trials at the UCL Dementia Research Centre, to test a new generation of drugs aimed at slowing down the progress of young-onset Alzheimer's.
Mr Bunting said: 'Taking part in this clinical trial is really important to me.
'The best-case scenario is that it slows the progression of my Alzheimer's, but what is also crucial is how these trials will help researchers learn more about the disease and benefit others like me in the future.'
He added: 'For me, life carries on – you don't feel it every day.
'In fact, although there are some things I can't do as well as I could in the past, I feel no different to when I was at school 50 years ago.
'I'm lucky, I'm reasonably fit and I've got lots of outdoor pursuits.'
Mr Bunting lives between London and Yorkshire with his wife Caroline. They have two daughters, Emily and Anna.
A keen cyclist, his goal is to raise £1m in the form of 100,000 one-off donations of £10 from individual sponsors.
Starting from Putney Bridge on Sunday, he will travel south and follow the coast around Cornwall, Wales, then north to Scotland before heading back down to London.
He is expecting the journey to take seven to eight weeks.
'When you look at a map of the UK, it's absolutely staggering – all the estuaries, rivers, the ups and downs,' he said.
'I'm fascinated by that and, over the past 18 months, I have trained hard, and mapped out my own 4,200-mile route around the coast of England, Wales and Scotland, setting up a satellite navigation system to guide me around it.
'My route around, will include a total elevation of 57,000 metres (18,7007ft) – almost the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest from sea level, every week for the seven or so weeks of the trip.'
Claire Wood Hill, chief executive of the National Brain Appeal, said: 'The challenge that Bernard has set himself is truly awe-inspiring and we are incredibly grateful.
'The Rare Dementia Support Centre really will transform the lives of people affected by these devastating conditions.
'We will be following his progress closely and wish him the very best of luck.'

Pregnant Sophie Habboo shows off her blossoming baby bump in a hilarious slogan crop top as she shares series of stylish snaps

Pregnant Sophie Habboo proudly showcased her blossoming baby bump in a series of Instagram snaps shared on Friday. The former Made in Chelsea star, 30, flaunted her growing bump in a white crop top with the slogan 'Too Old For [Leonardo] DiCaprio ' printed on it as she posed for a mirror selfie. She also shared a stunning shot of herself in a white dress as she strolled through the streets of London while holding a iced coffee and her phone. Sophie also posted behind-the-scenes glimpses from the recording studio and a visit to the hairdresser as she documented the early days of her pregnancy. She wrapped up her photo dump with a fun picture of her husband, Jamie Laing, enjoying an ice cream, along with some delicious food she recently indulged in. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Sophie revealed earlier this week on her and Jamie's newly named podcast NearlyParents, that she has struggled with some aspects of her pregnancy. She confessed that when her second trimester hit, she felt like she was 'dying' and was dealing with a lot of hormones that made her frequently feel irritated. 'This girl has gone from a bit of a b***h to don't come near me,' she quipped. 'Up until week eight, I was smooth sailing. No good aversions, no sickness, so much energy, I was like what is every talking about this is unbelievable. 'Week eight hit and everyone's starting to grate to me a bit. Like that man sat next to me on the plane breathing, like is it illegal if I punch him in the face? 'If you're a fan of the podcast, I love you so much but you're not going to like me if you meet me at the moment.' Jamie said he struggled to get his head around Sophie's mood changes with pregnancy, recalling: 'I asked Sophie if she had any cravings and she said, ''No, the only craving I have is hating you''. 'I then spent an evening on Reddit looking at "Why does your wife hate her husband so much when they're pregnant". He went on: 'Sophie is teaching me to drive and I'm a little bit nervous in the car and she goes "You're a s**t driver". I'm literally in my head going "Oh my god she's hasn't eaten this is really scary". 'Sophie then gets so angry she says to me "I'm so angry I want to drive us both into the back of this car and kill us". And then she started crying!' Sophie confessed that the 'anger is uncontrollable' but that it 'was very fleeting' as she lamented how her 'enormous t*ts' also meant she couldn't fit in any of her clothes. Jamie candidly told listeners how he owed her a real apology after not taking her hormones seriously and threatening to leave her over her 'grumpiness'. Sophie said: 'Jamie was like "Oh you're just milking it, you fake all your hormones, there's no such thing". He went "Oh you're just faking all of this." I was like "Oh my god" as I'm lying there with my enormous t*ts out and I can't fit into a single thing.' Recalling the incident in question, she went on: 'We are leaving and I feel really sick this day and Jamie gets his camera out and goes "I'm going to vlog today". Like on my Sunday that I'm about to vomit all day long. 'And what happened was Jamie sits down and he goes "I'm going to call my friends and ask them what I should do about this. Because I'm going to have to leave you. I'm going to leave you because you're just so unbearable right now."' Jokingly pretending to break down in tears, she shared: 'And I went "You're going to leave me and I'm pregnant".' It comes after the couple took to their podcast to tell their fans all about their impeding parenthood for the first time, where Sophie revealed some of the struggles she'd been dealing with in her pregnancy In defence of his actions, Jamie quickly added: 'The amount of people who are going to call me an a*****e. Just a caveat to add - I had no idea the emotional journey that you go on, how your body changes. 'I just didn't understand the extreme things that go on and since having read stuff on Instagram, I am awe of what you go through. The hormone change is wild.' Showing their Chelsea roots, the couple also revealed that Sophie's worst craving so far was for caviar, recounting how they had dashed round London trying to find a shop that was open at 8pm. Jamie explained they eventually found a caviar store only to discover a single pot cost £240, as he declared: 'I was like "Well that craving has to stop there and then". Sophie revealed that after some Googling, she learned it is recommended that pregnant people avoid the expensive delicacy due to the risks of bacteria and mercury. However, she confessed that the risks were the only thing that stopped her eating it, otherwise would not have allowed the hefty price tag to put her off.

Moment Tube driver is caught KNITTING and watching videos on his phone while driving commuters

An easy-going tube driver was caught knitting and watching videos on his phone as he drove commuters around one of the busiest transport networks in the world. Striking footage shows the London Underground operative hard at work on a lion-themed garment as he pulls slowly out of Hendon Central Station in February 2025. The man's phone is also positioned comfortably in front of him so he can watch videos at his leisure. A witness who filmed the spectacle - which took place on a Northern Line train - commented disapprovingly, 'look at him... watching TV, pressing a couple of buttons'. He went on to reference the money the driver earns each year and claimed he can go on strike 'whenever he wants'. The witness later recalled: 'I was so surprised. 'I didn't expect to see someone meant to be at work being so casual about the job. 'Especially because at the time, there were tube strikes going on so it felt mad they were complaining about the job then relaxing on it. The man's phone is also positioned comfortably in front of him so he can watch videos at his leisure 'And, although I don't know how automatic the system is for the tubes, I remember thinking that this person has the passengers' lives in their hands. 'It felt crazy that this driver wouldn't take that more seriously.' Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed the driver in the video was sacked from his job. A spokesman said: 'This video was made earlier in the year. 'We carried out a full investigation and the person involved no longer works at TfL.' Many social media users have taken to TikTok to share their thoughts on the video. One person said: 'He's risking his career for a bit of TV.' Another added: 'The driver shouldn't be doing that, they should be focussing - that's dangerous.' But a number of people offered their support to the tube worker amid the criticism. Someone said: 'What do you want him to be doing? Steering?'
