Police investigate ‘improvised explosive' which led to I-5 closure, suspect arrested
Portland resident Alexander R. Wick, 38, was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center for allegedly manufacturing a destructive device, among other charges.
Portland police began searching the area near NE 15th Avenue and Alberta Street just before 1:30 p.m., and officers expect to be in the area for multiple hours. However, investigators said there is 'no articulable ongoing danger to the community.'

'We all were dumbfounded when the situation came by. And it wasn't until I was starting to putting context clues together. I saw the bomb squad vest, I saw the K-9 units, and it literally looked like federal officers that were surrounded. So, like, this is something big. This is something bigger than we're all thinking,' said Meaghan Sutton, who witnessed the explosives investigation unfold in Northeast Portland on Thursday.
Matty Sallin, who lives nearby, said it was 'fascinating to see that there's drama going on.'
He added that he found it 'despicable' that someone would allegedly throw things at drivers to hurt them as they were traveling down the highway, something police accused Wick of doing over the weekend.
Wick allegedly slashed tires and threatened drivers while claiming to have a bomb on Saturday, according to Portland police.
That night, officers responded to I-5 at the Northeast Failing Street pedestrian bridge, where the man was allegedly throwing cones and other objects into the lanes of traffic before slashing the tires of any vehicles that stopped. He allegedly threw boards with nails in them into lanes of traffic and had a stop sign on a portable stand.
'The suspect threatened drivers with a screwdriver and claimed that he had a bomb,' police said. 'Officers searching the area located a bucket with a possible explosive device inside.'
'Due to the significant potential danger to the community, I-5 had to be closed to all traffic,' police said.
The Metro Area Explosives Disposal Unit investigated the device, which they determined was an 'improvised explosive.'
The man — later identified as Wick — had allegedly fled the scene, but was later located by a detective and taken into custody. No additional suspects are being sought.
A search warrant has granted investigators permission to search the neighborhood near the man's home 'in a slow, careful, methodical manner.'
Police said they believe people may have taken video of the incident on Saturday and are asking anyone with footage to come forward.

Trump Media CEO Nunes loses defamation lawsuit over Rachel Maddow show
By Jonathan Stempel NEW YORK (Reuters) -A federal judge dismissed a defamation lawsuit by Devin Nunes, the former California congressman and now chief executive of Trump Media and Technology Group, against NBCUniversal over a comment by Rachel Maddow about his dealings with a suspected Russian agent. U.S. District Judge Kevin Castel in Manhattan ruled on Friday that no reasonable jury could find Maddow demonstrated actual malice toward Nunes in March 2021 when discussing a package addressed to him from pro-Russia Ukrainian legislator Andrii Derkach on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show." Nunes received the package in December 2019, when the Republican was the ranking member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Maddow told viewers that Nunes "refused to hand it over to the FBI, which is what you should do if you get something from somebody who is sanctioned by the U.S. as a Russian agent." Nunes said Maddow knew the package was turned over promptly. She and her executive producer, who were not defendants, claimed to rely on other sources when creating the segment. NBCUniversal is a unit of Comcast. In a 24-page decision, Castel said Nunes, a longtime supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump, failed to show Maddow was aware of a July 2020 article in Politico saying the FBI had received the package. The judge found no clear and convincing evidence that Maddow had a "high degree of awareness of probable falsity," or any evidence that "defendant's admitted political bias caused defendant to act with a reckless disregard of the truth." Nunes' lawyers and Trump Media did not immediately respond on Monday to requests for comment. Lawyers for NBCUniversal did not immediately respond to similar requests. The U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned Derkach in September 2020 for trying to interfere in that year's U.S. presidential election to help Trump, who lost to Democrat Joe Biden. Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn, New York charged Derkach in December 2022 with unrelated money laundering and sanctions violations. He remains at large. The case is Nunes v NBCUniversal Media Inc, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 22-01633.

WWE fans react to Brock Lesnar's return amid sex trafficking case involvement: 'Just coward stuff'
Brock Lesnar shocked wrestling fans on Sunday night when his music hit the speakers at MetLife Stadium after John Cena lost the WWE Championship to Cody Rhodes. Cena was getting a standing ovation in his final SummerSlam when Lesnar's music blared for the first time in two years. Lesnar and Cena stared one another down for several minutes before Lesnar hopped into the ring and delivered his signature F5. The pop at the home of the New York Giants and Jets was deafening, and the reaction on social media was wild, as many fans loved to see one of WWE's greatest rivalries rekindled. However, the other side of the coin was shock, with a combination of disappointment. The main reason for Lesnar's absence is that he was directly named in the sex trafficking lawsuit against Vince McMahon (he is not listed as a defendant). Former WWE employee Janel Grant alleged that McMahon attempted to get Grant to have sex with Lesnar, in order to entice Lesnar to re-sign with the company. "WWE benefited financially from the commercial sex act venture orchestrated by McMahon, including by having wrestling talent, such as Brock Lesnar, sign new contracts with WWE after McMahon presented Ms. Grant as a sexual commodity for their use," the suit alleges. Lesnar is accused of asking Grant for a video of her urinating, to which she obliged, and also expressing his "desire" to have a sexual encounter. Thus, his return on Sunday drew the ire of many fans. "That rapist is allowed back in the wwe?" one user wrote. "Literally part of a lawsuit. But ok man," said another. "FYI, if anyone comes into my mention defending Brock Lesnar, who enabled and participated in the abhorrent torture of a young woman. I will not argue – I will block you. Protect women!" added one more. Fans also noticed that there was no usual formal press conference after either SummerSlam night. Instead, Paul "Triple H" Levesque and the other talent appeared on the WWE post show. "Triple H dropping the post show press conference so that no one could question him about bringing back a sex offender shows the scummy piece of s--- he is," one X post said. Another said the lack of press conferences were "just coward stuff."
