ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraq is set to complete the first phase of the Grand Faw Port project by the end of this year, the transportation ministry said on Sunday, with the port set to be the largest in the Gulf.
'The first phase of the Grand Faw Port will be completed by the end of this year,' ministry spokesperson Maytham al-Safi told Rudaw.
The Iraqi government has partnered with the South Korean Daewoo E&C to build the port, which is set to cost an estimated $4.83 billion.
Al-Faw is located south of Umm Qasr, Iraq's main seaport. The new port will be deeper than Qasr to allow large container ships to dock in its harbor.
'The area of the Grand Faw Port is 54 square kilometers – the largest port in the Middle East,' Safi said.
After the project's completion, the port will be connected to the port of Mersin in Turkey by land, therefore greatly reducing the time needed to transport goods between the Gulf nations and Turkey.
It will serve as the southern terminal of the Development Road project, which is planned from southern Iraq to the Turkish border, connecting the Persian Gulf with Turkey. It aims to enhance Iraq's geopolitical position, boost the economy, and create thousands of job opportunities. The route is expected to link Iraq with the European Union via Turkey.
The Faw port project has faced many obstacles since the foundation stone was laid in 2010 due to successive conflicts in the country.

Iraq's al-Nujaba demands US expulsion after Iran strikes

Shafaq News/ On Friday, Iraq's al-Nujaba Movement called on the government to expel US forces, accusing them of enabling Israel's sweeping air raids deep inside Iranian territory. In a statement, the group's Secretary-General, Akram al-Kaabi, extended condolences to Iran, linking the strikes to what he described as repeated violations of Iraqi sovereignty. 'The Israeli attack on the Islamic Republic, along with ongoing breaches of Iraqi airspace in coordination with US forces, must not go unanswered,' al-Kaabi stated. 'A complete withdrawal of US troops from Iraqi territory and skies is essential.' He also credited Iran with backing armed groups in Palestine and Lebanon, recalling its support for Iraq during the fight against the Islamic State group. The statement came amid mounting denunciations from Iran-aligned groups, including Kataib Hezbollah and Asaib Ahl al-Haq. All warned of possible retaliation, pointing to US involvement in Israel's Operation Rising Lion, which resulted in the deaths of senior Iranian commanders, scientists, and civilians.

Israel's Rising Lion: Mideast airspace closures mount

Shafaq News/ Israel's military operation against Iran has led to widespread airspace closures and flight suspensions in the region. Turkish Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu announced that all flights operated by Turkish airlines to Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Jordan have been suspended until Monday, June 16. In a post on X, Uraloglu said aviation authorities and airlines had implemented precautionary measures and adjusted flight paths to avoid unsafe airspace following the Israeli attack on Iran. 13 Haziran 2025 tarihinde sabah erken saatlerde İsrail tarafından İran'a yönelik başlatılan hava saldırıları neticesinde, bölgedeki güvenlik risklerinin artması nedeniyle İsrail, İran, Suriye ve Irak hava sahaları geçici olarak hava trafiğine kapatılmıştı kapsamda:… — Abdulkadir URALOĞLU (@a_uraloglu) June 13, 2025 Meanwhile, Lebanon's Civil Aviation Directorate revealed that the country's airspace remains partially open. Amin Jaber, Director General of Lebanese Civil Aviation, told Shafaq News that all eastern routes toward Syria, Iraq, and Jordan are closed, halting outbound flights on those paths, while Iraq suspended all inbound flights to Beirut, and some Lebanese aircraft are reaching Amman via a limited route through Jordanian airspace. Jaber said Cyprus now serves as Lebanon's only open-air corridor and remains a key connection to Europe and nearby regions. An Iraqi security source also told Shafaq News that Iraq had closed its airspace and suspended all flights in response to Israel's military operation. The move followed the launch of Operation Rising Lion, during which more than 200 Israeli warplanes struck Iranian nuclear and military sites. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the objective was to neutralize a growing existential threat, while Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei pledged a 'severe punishment' in response.

Supporters of Iraqi armed factions protest against Israeli strikes on Iran

Shafaq News/ Dozens of supporters of Iran-aligned armed factions in Iraq staged a protest in central Baghdad on Friday evening, denouncing Israel's military strikes on Iranian territory and condemning the alleged use of Iraqi airspace in the operation. A security source told Shafaq News that demonstrators gathered near the Suspension Bridge (al-Jisr al-Mu'allaq), one of the capital's key access points to the Green Zone, to express solidarity with Iran following the air raids that targeted military and nuclear facilities in multiple Iranian provinces. The demonstration unfolded under tight security measures, with Law Enforcement Forces heavily deployed in and around Tahrir Square. Authorities also took precautionary steps by shutting down the Suspension Bridge to prevent escalation or unauthorized access to sensitive areas of the capital. The protest follows a series of sharp condemnations issued by major Iran-aligned groups, including Kataib Hezbollah, Harakat Al-Nujabaa, and Asaib Ahl al-Haq, all of which warned of potential retaliation and accused the United States of complicity in Israel's Operation Rising Lion that killed senior Iranian commanders, scientists, and civilians.
