Costco Announces It Will Close All U.S. Stores on May 26

Yahoo19-05-2025
Costco has become one of the biggest names in the membership-only warehouse club store business. The chain first opened under the name Price Club on Morena Boulevard in San Diego in 1976, and today, there are more than 600 Costco stores across the U.S. While the chain has stores throughout the country, the state with the biggest number of Costco locations in the U.S. is California, with 142 stores, according to ScrapeHero, which is about 23% of all Costco stores in the U.S.
Those hoping to hit up Costco on a particular day off in May will have to make other plans, because the company has confirmed that it will close all of its locations on one day in May.
Costco has announced that it will close all of its U.S. stores for the entire day on Memorial Day, which takes place on May 26 this year. This announcement is in line with Costco's tradition of closing all stores on major holidays, such as Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. So, those hoping to rush to Costco on Memorial Day for some last-minute supplies for a barbecue or get-together should make plans to go there earlier in the holiday weekend.
"Memorial Day honors the sacrifice and loss of those who served and died in the military," according to the Wounded Warrior Project. "Veterans Day honors all who have served in the U.S. military.
"Memorial Day, a federal holiday held the last Monday in May, is the nation's foremost annual day to mourn and honor its deceased service men and women," adds the National Cemetery Administration.
Costco is a "membership warehouse club, dedicated to bringing our members the best possible prices on quality brand-name merchandise. With hundreds of locations worldwide, Costco provides a wide selection of merchandise, plus the convenience of specialty departments and exclusive member services, all designed to make your shopping experience a pleasurable one," according to the company.

How to Save on School Supplies

The best way to save on basic school supplies is not buying at all, which may be more possible than many parents think. Start with a little research into your school's policies to avoid any unnecessary purchases, advises Kalee Thompson, Wirecutter's editor of baby and kid coverage. 'Honestly, my kids' schools supply pretty much all the school supplies, which is typical with a lot of public schools these days,' she says. In the three different school districts her family has lived, 'the school provides the pencils/paper/basic school supplies, but in some cases [will ask] parents to buy stuff in bulk for the classroom. That could include everything from tape and paper to tissues and snacks! Hello, Costco, or other big-box store.' But what if you have to buy essentials? The best times to save on the basics happen earlier and more often than you may think. Amazon and competing retailers now offer big sales on household essentials, school supplies among them, at predictable points throughout the year. The most fruitful time is Amazon's July Prime Day, which sees competing sales from the likes of Target and Walmart and can be a great time to pick up pens, pencils, and paper products such as notebooks and planners. The competing sales often allow you to buy from the retailer you most prefer. Historically, the Wirecutter Deals team has observed a higher number of deals on basics during this July time frame than in most other periods. And that tracks beyond Wirecutter picks: We looked at the price histories of several of the top-selling products on Amazon in commonly requested school-supply categories, including pencils, glue, markers, dry-erase markers, tissues, crayons, colored pencils, highlighters, folders, lined paper, scissors, erasers, and notebooks, and found that July was a top time to buy for nearly two-thirds of them. (This July, we even saw a three-pack of our longtime favorite ballpoint pen drop to the lowest price we've seen, at just $1 per pen.) Of course, during the school year, essential school supplies can get depleted or lost. Thankfully, any stock sold out during the back-to-school rush is usually replenished by the time Amazon's October Prime Day sale and other competing events roll around. Black Friday and Cyber Week also bring notable sales on our school-supplies picks, offering you a great opportunity to stock up for the following semester.

Costco members report multiple major gift card problems

It's widely known that using a Costco gift card allows non-members access to the warehouse club. That's a secret back door, but the reality is that most people who want to shop at the chain simply become Costco members. There's really no reason to find a secret back door when the front door works so well. Still, Costco gift cards remain popular both as a way to beat the system and as an easy gift for Costco members. The problem is that some members have reported massive problems with their cards. This includes a number of issues. Balances are simply disappearingPhysical cards arrive with a $0 balanceWait times for physical cards can be more than a few weeks. The biggest issue, however, is likely the "disappearing balance" issue. Some people who had a Costco Shop card, the official name for the chain's gift card, with a balance on it found their funds simply went away. That's a major issue for a chain with bare-bones customer service, and some members/customers are not happy. Image source: VIEWpress/Getty Images Various Costco Reddit threads are filled with people complaining about missing funds on their cards. "I recently bought a $500 shop card on their website and went to use it in store, only to be told the balance was now $0. I am 100% sure nobody had access to this card except for me. The employee at my local Costco said he had a coworker who had this same issue and it turned out to be hacked," wrote JustBumbling77. The customer called Costco and was told by the first representative that this was a known issue. Related: Amazon enters used car market to disrupt broken dealer process "The second representative I spoke to told me that it's not their problem and it must be a security issue on my end (even though I've had no other indication of my email being hacked - none of my other information has been compromised)," they added. Costco did ultimately mail that person a replacement card for the full balance. Other Reddit users posted similar experiences: "I have seen other people commenting similar things about Shop Cards being used in California. Really sounds like an issue on Costco's side that they need to resolve ASAP. Especially for cases like this where disputing the charge is not straightforward," TitusMilo posted."I bought a shop card two weeks ago and used it once. It should still have some balance, but today when I checked the balance online, it shows zero. I reported this to the front desk at my local store and they are looking into it. Still waiting for their response," JunzHefen wrote.I ran into the same issue and Costco told me to dispute the transaction as that was the only way. I disputed it a couple of days ago from my credit card, let's see how it goes," posted JaiDeep13. There were dozens of other comments sharing similar issues. The Canadian Broadcasting company requested a comment from Costco's U.S. headquarters on this issue and received no reply. In addition to people losing their card balances, others have taken to social media to complain that Costco has major problems when it comes to delivering and accepting cards. Costco does not share user names on its website. That may be a one-off bad customer service situation, but that comes from Costco's own website, which is filled with other complaints. Costco's website also shows a lot of complaints about actually using digital gift cards. "The digital shop cards themselves are okay IF you know what you're doing, but there are definitely a number of problems if you're going with the digital version. 1. Not all cashiers know how to enter these. About half the time, they will have to ask someone else to help them," the poster shared. The poster also shared how to solve this problem. "You can avoid this by going to the self-checkout line when possible," they added. Digital gift cards cannot be used at gas pumps and food courts. Your McDonald's Salt Packet Might Be 50 Years Old

Your McDonald's Salt Packet Might Be 50 Years Old originally appeared on Parade. Salt and sugar are common food preservatives for a reason: they never go bad. That's why your grandmother has that Costco-sized box of sugar in her cabinet that looks like it's been there since the Eisenhower administration. Well, one Reddit user made a similar observation about a salt packet they'd recently gotten at McDonald's. After doing some sleuthing online, they realized the salt packet was using the McDonald's logo from 1975. They thought it was strange, as the logo has gone through several minor iterations over the last half-century. Why would McDonald's still be using one from the era of disco and earth tones? Then, several people in the comments pointed out the inconvenient, perhaps even unpleasant, truth: the salt packet most likely was 50 years old. 🍳 SIGN UP to get delicious recipes, handy kitchen hacks & fun food news in our daily Pop Kitchen newsletter 🍳 The most damning evidence? McDonald's does not, in fact, still use that dated logo on its salt packets. The current packets say "Iodized Salt" in red sans-serif font with a plain and simple golden arches logo underneath. While it might sound surprising, finding old salt packets at McDonald's isn't exactly uncommon. Another Redditor made a similar post a month ago, and a UK McDonald's customer found one in the wild two years ago. "Wait until you find out how old the salt was before it was dug out the ground," one commenter jokingly wrote. Belive it or not, someone even once tried to sell a packet of McDonald's salt from 1986 on Facebook Marketplace for $150. "Very rare and no longer available!" the ad exclaimed. "This pack has been kept in an humidity controlled environment to keep that container crisp!" If you love the salt package so much you want to frame it in your living room, the seller offered to mount the packet to the wall for an additional $500.
