Father of girl injured in Southport attack says she was stabbed by ‘coward'

Independent09-07-2025
The father of one of the girls injured in the Southport attack has told an inquiry she was stabbed in the back by a 'coward she didn't see'.
On Wednesday, the second day of the public inquiry heard evidence from families of the children who survived the attack, carried out by Axel Rudakubana at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class on July 29 last year.
The father of one of the girls, who was referred to as C3 during the hearing to protect her identity, told the hearing at Liverpool Town Hall it was 'patently clear that lessons need to be learned from what happened, and processes need to be changed'.
Sitting beside the girl's mother in the witness box, he said: 'Our nine-year-old daughter was stabbed three times in the back by a coward she didn't even see.
'Although she didn't know what was happening — she knew she had to run. '
He said they had since seen CCTV footage of her running from the building on Hart Street, looking 'scared, confused and pained' and hiding behind a parked car, before jumping to 'relative safety' through an open car door.
He added: 'We remain eternally grateful that we were lucky that day, and that the skill of the paramedics, surgeons and medical staff meant we got our little girl back.'
Describing his daughter as his 'hero', the father said she remained 'the positive, caring, funny, enthusiastic, courageous girl she always was'.
He said: 'She wears her scars with a dignity and defiance that is remarkable.'
The mother of another girl who was at the event, referred to as Child Q, said arriving to collect her daughter on that day and seeing screaming children from the building was 'the most horrific experience of my life'.
'To be unaware of what was happening, trying to process it all whilst also being fearful of what could happen next – it's an unexplainable feeling,' she said.
'What I saw on that day will stick with me forever, I constantly have flashbacks and re-live what happened.'
The statement, read by the family's legal representative, said Child Q was 'an anxious little girl' who had taken 'significant step' by attending the event as she often struggled socially outside school.
The girl's mother said: 'Although physically unharmed, she has struggled with the psychological impact of the trauma and to this day has been unable to talk to us about what happened and what she witnessed.
'Our daughter became very withdrawn, emotional and had so many worries. In her words, due to what she witnessed, 'How will I ever be normal again'?
'She is even more anxious about not being with us or being dropped off at another event without us.
'She is scared when she hears a siren or sees an emergency vehicle. Q is still unable to sleep alone and struggles with falling asleep.
'She always asks for doors to be closed when we enter or leave a room, this helps her to feel safe.'
Child Q's mother said her daughter now has to sit where she can see the door at school so she can always be aware of who is entering the classroom, and is sometimes unable to attend school altogether due to her anxiety.
She added: 'We will always do everything we can to make sure that what happened doesn't control our lives or take away our joy.
'Our daughter is a strong, brave and beautiful little girl who has so much love and support around her to get her through the tough days.
'As her parents all we want is for her to feel safe, loved and to enjoy her childhood and we will do everything we can to make this happen.'
A statement was read on behalf of the mother of a seven-year-old girl referred to as C8.
Her mother described her daughter as having an 'incredible energy', but said the incident in July 'changed everything'.
She said she was at work on July 29 when she received a 'panicked phone call' from her friend's mother.
She said: 'That moment, the sound of fear in her voice and the panic I felt will never leave me.
'I rushed to the scene and what I saw is something no parent should ever see.'
She said her daughter, who suffered injuries to her arm and face, could not be left alone any more and only felt safe with a small number of people, needing 'constant support, reassurance and protection'.
She had 'witnessed horrors that no-one should ever see', she said.
She said: 'I am grateful beyond words that she survived. But what she went through, what she saw and what she continues to carry has changed everything.'
Counsel to the inquiry Nicholas Moss KC said commemorative and impact evidence from victims and families was the 'first and important part' of the first phase of the public inquiry.
Four statements were due to be heard on Wednesday, with more evidence from families expected when hearings resume in September.
The inquiry was opened on Tuesday by chairman Sir Adrian Fulford, who described the acts of Rudakubana as 'one of the most egregious crimes in our country's history'.
The 18-year-old was given a life sentence in January, with a minimum term of 52 years, for the murders of Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven.
He also attempted to murder eight other children, who cannot be named for legal reasons, as well as instructor Leanne Lucas and businessman John Hayes.
In his opening statement, Sir Adrian said Rudakubana 'posed a very serious and significant risk of violent harm, with a particular and known predilection for knife crime'.

Police hunt for topless man after woman 'sexually assaulted on London Underground train'

Police have begun their hunt for a topless man after a woman was sexually assaulted on a London Underground train. The horrifying attack happened on a Jubilee line train travelling between the Southwark and London Bridge stations, on Monday, June 30. In an especially disturbing turn, the suspect struck just before 5pm - during rush hour, when passengers might especially expect to be safe amid crowds of commuters. British Transport Police (BTP) officers are now looking to speak to another man who they believe might have information which could help their investigation. They have now released a CCTV image of the person of interest in the hope members of the public might recognise him and be able to identify him. The picture shows a white, middle-aged man, of an average build, with very short, dark hair and a large tattoo on the top of his right arm. He is shirtless and wearing black and white patterned shorts, walking through what appears to be a Tube station. Anyone who recognises him is asked to contact the BTP by texting 61016 or by calling 0800 405040, quoting reference 500 of June 30. People can alternatively contact the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. Reports of sexual offences across London's Tubes, trains and buses have risen by more than 10 per cent year on year, recent Transport for London (TfL) figures show. Some 2,671 sexual offences were reported to police across the TfL network between February 2023 and January 2024. This is a rise of a whopping 10.5 per cent on the number reported in the same period the year before - 2,418. TfL noted the year on year period in question saw an increase in the total number of passengers on the network as the country readjusted post-pandemic. It also added an 'increase in reporting was anticipated' after it launched a wave of posters across its network in January 2023 encouraging 'bystander intervention'. These signs followed the rollout of other posters in October 2021 raising awareness of different forms of sexual harassment, including upskirting, cat-calling, inappropriate touching and more. The newer posters encouraged passengers to intervene, if safe to do so, to help victims of any sexual harassment on the transport network. The transport authority said: 'Tracking research has not indicated any significant increase in incidents on the network, therefore the increase in the number of reports is a positive sign that the campaign is helping to raise awareness of what constitutes sexual harassment and our zero-tolerance approach to any form of abuse on our network.'

Gregg Wallace and wife Anna stand united as they celebrate their nine year wedding anniversary amid the former MasterChef star's sexual misconduct probe

Gregg Wallace and wife Anna stand united as they celebrate their nine year wedding anniversary on Instagram on Thursday following his MasterChef sexual misconduct probe. The wife of the TV presenter has now shared a sweet throwback snap of the couple on their wedding day as they cut their huge three-tier cake. Anna also beamed for a selfie with Gregg as they enjoyed a picturesque picnic at Hever Castle in Kent, the location of the couples wedding nine years ago. Anna, who shares five-year-old son Sid with Gregg, looked stunning in a green dress and sunglasses while the BBC star rocked a black fleece and baseball cap. Alongside a photo of the grounds of the castle, she penned: 'Back at Hever Castle today to celebrate our anniversary'. The mother-of-one also re-shared a video Gregg posted of the couple discussing their anniversary as the presenter gushed he is 'a very lucky man'. Gregg said: 'Hello it's our wedding anniversary, how many years Anna?' prompting her to reply, 'Nine years'. He continued: 'Nine years, how long have you been together, 12 or 13? We're not sure. 'The theme is willow and we've got a picnic basket and we are at Heaber Castle which is where we got married nine years ago. 'Beautiful setting, beautiful wife, I'm a very lucky man'. Gregg stepped down from MasterChef after complaints were made about his behaviour and following a report into his conduct, in which 45 of 83 complaints were upheld. The review concluded that the 'majority of the substantiated allegations against Wallace related to inappropriate sexual language and humour'. It added that 'a smaller number of allegations of other inappropriate language and being in a state of undress were also substantiated', with 'one incident of unwelcome physical contact' also substantiated. Though the findings resulted in Gregg being fired from the BBC completely, it appears the presenter could be lined up for another big show. The mother-of-one also re-shared a video Gregg posted of the couple discussing their anniversary as the presenter gushed he is 'a very lucky man' as they enjoyed a picnic On Thursday, bookies are predicting Gregg will feature in this year's series of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! The jungle show, hosted by Ant and Dec, will return with a brand new cast of celebrities this November. Gregg is currently 4/1 to appear, according to William Hill, while his former co-host John has odds of 6/1. Australian-born chef John, 59, also lost his job after two decades over allegations that he used the N-word, which he claims to have 'absolutely no recollection' of. I'm A Celeb has previously been used as a platform for under-fire celebrities to reinvent their image. Former Health Secretary Matt Hancock competed on the show in 2022, bagging an appearance fee of £320,000 and finishing in third place. Gregg and John have returned to screens for one final time together as the BBC made the decision to air the controversial 21st series of MasterChef. It was filmed last year and remained shelved by the broadcaster until the findings of the independent investigation were gathered. Fans have been left divided over the move to air the programme, with some branding the decision as 'bizarre' and accused the BBC of being 'tone deaf'. There was a last-minute scramble behind-the-scenes to re-edit it and limit the appearances of John and Gregg. One contestant, Sarah Shafi, will not appear on the programme after she complained about the behaviour of Gregg Wallace. She claimed she was 'eyed up and ogled' by Gregg Wallace on the show, while accusing the TV host of making an 'off' comment about his reputation with women.

London Zoo stalker who bombarded female colleague with messages, flowers and chocolates before proposing to her faces deportation

A London Zoo employee who stalked his female colleague and bombarded her with messages, flowers and chocolates before proposing to her faces deportation. Asish Jose Paul, 26, was warned to stay away from Lutaruta Masiulonyte after he spent six months between July 7 and December 30 last year pestering his former co-worker, showering her with gifts when she blocked his number. The accountancy student, originally from Kerala, India, was given police bail on his arrest and warned not to go back to the zoo. But he returned the very next day to speak with Ms Masiulonyte. Jose Paul was then re-arrested, charged with stalking and given bail magistrates with conditions not to enter the Borough of Westminster or contact the complainant. The stalker headed straight back to the zoo, however, and was arrested once again. He was again bailed with a condition not to go within 50 metres of London Zoo but visited the tourist attraction once more, explaining to Royal Park attendants that he was 'in love' with his former colleague. Jose Paul was given a six-month prison sentence suspended for twelve months, at Southwark Crown Court, and will have to complete 20 days of a rehabilitation activity requirement. The accountancy student, originally from Kerala, India, was given police bail on his arrest and warned not to go back to the zoo, pictured, but he returned the very next day Recorder Jas Jandu also issued a ten year restraining order and said that Paul could face deportation after the defendant admitted stalking involving serious alarm or distress. The court heard Paul studied for a Masters' degree in accounting and finance at Anglia Ruskin University between 2022 and 2023. He had been working in the cafe at London Zoo and met the victim there. Jose Paul appeared for his sentencing hearing wearing a light blue t-shirt and white trousers. In a victim impact Ms Masiulonyte said: 'This incident has taken a toll on me emotionally and psychologically. 'The harassment was going on for so long it drained me. I feel scared and anxious being in London. My friends and family are worried for me and for my safety. 'I feel anxious all the time. I feel frustrated. I repeated myself so many times I started to question whether I was the problem. 'I lost my independence through the harassment. I have to rely on someone to be with me to feel safe.' But Georgina Lane, defending said: 'There is no evidence that very serious distress was caused. 'I am not diminishing the level of distress that was caused, but when one considers the array of offences that come before this court, including violence and threats, very serious distress was not caused. 'The defendant's responsibility is substantially reduced due to a mental disorder and learning disabilities. 'He has suffered a lot in prison and he has learned his lesson. Perhaps it took for him to be remanded in custody for it to hit home for Mr Paul. 'He completed a degree in business administration in India, and he obtained a masters degree in accounting and finance. He has good future career prospects and he hopes to obtain a job as a financial analyst.' Sentencing Paul, Judge Jandu said: 'You tried to befriend her by paying her a lot of attention. You obtained her number by means unknown to her... You began contacting her via text. 'You approached her at work and asked her why she was not replying to your messages. She made it clear that she was uncomfortable and blocked your number.' Eventually Jose Paul was dismissed from his job, but that didn't stop him from trying to contact her again. 'You attended her work place with flowers and gifts,' the judge added. You approached her colleagues to obtain further information about her.' After Paul was arrested, his mother tried to contact Ms Masiulonyte. Judge Jandu said: 'It appears in this case that she also received messages from your mother. You confessed to having used three SIM cards and a friend's mobile phone to contact her. 'She explains the emotional and psychological toll that this took on her. She tried to tell you to stop but you would not listen. 'She says that she is angry and frustrated that you would not acknowledge her boundaries despite her repeating herself. She has also had to change her work location. 'She says that she is worried as she does not know what you are capable of.' He added: 'A polite smile is not an invitation to anything further. It went from small talk to a declaration of love to a proposal.' In his pre-sentence report it was claimed that Jose Paul has symptoms consistent with autism. But the judge said that he was sceptical of the defendant's claim he is the main breadwinner in his family. 'Your family say that you are the sole breadwinner,' he said. 'But you also say that you are supported by your family. Those two things seem to cancel each other out as far as I am concerned.' Sentencing the stalker, he added: 'You have to leave her alone, Mr Paul, do you understand? Or it could be up to five years in prison. 'Your visa is due to expire on 13 September 2025. You meet the requirements for deportation unless you are granted a new visa.' Judge Jandu made no order for costs.
