JPMorgan, SEC meet to discuss capital markets moving onchain

Crypto Insight18-06-2025
Executives with America's biggest bank met with the Securities and Exchange Commission's Crypto Task Force to discuss digital asset regulation and potential ramifications of capital markets moving onchain.
The JPMorgan Chase executives discussed with the SEC the 'potential impact of existing capital markets activity migrating to public blockchain,' including which areas of the existing model might change and how firms could assess the risks and benefits of those changes, according to an SEC note shared on Tuesday.
The two groups also discussed JPMorgan's existing 'business footprint' in the crypto space, including its current digital platform that handles repurchase agreements — a type of short-term borrowing in financial markets that falls under its 'Digital Financing' and 'Digital Debt Services' offerings.
JPMorgan also assessed where it could carve out a 'competitive angle' — to stay ahead of the race as financial institutions look to the blockchain for faster, cheaper transactions while also unlocking new revenue streams through tokenized assets.
Three JPMorgan executives meet with SEC
Scott Lucas, Justin Cohen and Aaron Iovine were the three JPMorgan executives who spoke with the SEC's crypto group.
Lucas is the firm's head of markets for digital assets, while Cohen is the global head of equity derivatives development; both are managing directors at the firm.
Iovine is an executive director and JPMorgan's global head of digital asset regulatory policy. JPMorgan pilots JPMD deposit tokens
JPMorgan's meeting with the SEC comes as the firm announced a token deposit pilot program on Tuesday, with the bank launching a deposit token, JPMD, on Coinbase's blockchain Base.
Coinbase's institutional clients can use JPMD for transactions once the pilot is completed, which is expected to span over several months.
A day earlier, JPMorgan filed a trademark application for JPMD — which outlined a range of crypto-related services, including digital asset trading, transfers and payment processing. JPMorgan exec says no plans yet for stablecoin
The JPMD trademark sparked speculation that JPMorgan would issue a stablecoin with other big banks; however, Naveen Mallela, an executive at JPMorgan's blockchain division, Kinexys, told Bloomberg that token deposits are a 'superior alternative to stablecoins' for institutions, noting that their fractional reserve backing makes them more scalable.
Deposit tokens represent dollar deposits held in customer bank accounts and operate within the traditional banking framework more so than stablecoins, which are merely digital representations of fiat currencies backed by cash and cash equivalents.

Tron will make debut in Consensys' crypto wallet MetaMask

The Tron network will be integrated into Consensys' crypto wallet MetaMask, becoming the third major non-Ethereum-based chain to get support since MetaMask launched in 2016. On Tuesday, Tron DAO announced the strategic partnership with MetaMask, which will natively integrate the Tron blockchain into the Consensys-developed self-custodial crypto wallet. 'MetaMask's extensive user base and established reputation make it a vital gateway to decentralized applications,' said Tron DAO community spokesperson Sam Elfarra. Angel Gonzalez-Capizzi, director of business development at MetaMask, commented on Tron's strong presence in Asia, adding that the integration helps build bridges across regions and ecosystems. 'Integrating a new network into MetaMask requires careful evaluation across security, technical, and user-experience dimensions. The sequencing of integrations isn't about market cap rankings but about aligning product readiness, security reviews, and demand from our users. Tron met those thresholds at this time, which is why we moved forward,' Gonzalez-Capizzi explained to Cointelegraph. MetaMask added native support for the Solana blockchain in May with a new extension enabling users to manage Solana SPL tokens. MetaMask also supports BNB Smart Chain and Sei, with the rest of its integrations consisting of Ethereum layer-2 networks. Solana is now live on MetaMask Extension! 🦊 — 🦊 (@MetaMask) May 27, 2025 The addition of the Tron blockchain has been a long time coming, considering it is one of the top 10 blockchains by market capitalization. The partnership could also turn out to be a further positive for Tron, as MetaMask announced the launch of a self-custody crypto card in partnership with Mastercard in April, though it is only available on a limited waiting list basis at the time of writing. Tron gains traction after US election The Tron network has benefited from the crypto regulatory pivot in the United States, with ambitions to go public via a reverse merger in the US. In June, toy maker SRM Entertainment announced it would rebrand as Tron Inc. and adopt a treasury strategy centered on TRX with Tron founder Justin Sun as an adviser. Following the announcement, Eric Trump, a son of US President Donald Trump, denied involvement in Tron's public offering pursuit but said 'I'm the biggest fan of Tron,' adding that he admires Sun and considers him a 'great friend and icon in the crypto space.' Sun has been one of the biggest buyers of Trump's memecoin and attended the president's VIP gala dinner in May. 'Our decision process wasn't tied to political administrations. It was driven by product and security priorities, alongside user demand. That said, clearer regulatory signals in the U.S. are broadly constructive for the digital asset industry, which benefits all networks, including Tron, ' Gonzalez-Capizzi added. TRX continues its uptrend Tron's native token, TRX, surged 166% following the November US election, spiking to an all-time high of $0.43 in early December 2024, though the move was short-lived. The asset has been in a solid uptrend for most of this year, powering past its 2021 market cycle peak, gaining 37% year-to-date, and currently trading at $0.347, according to CoinGecko. Source:
