India's active Covid-19 cases fall under 6,000; three deaths in 24 hours

India's active Covid-19 caseload fell to 5,976 on Thursday, down from 6,483 the previous day, marking the third consecutive day of decline. Three deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Of the three fatalities, two were from Delhi and one from Kerala. All the deceased were elderly individuals with chronic health conditions.
Active Covid-19 cases have declined across most states, with 507 fewer new infections reported on Wednesday. Delhi recorded the highest number of fresh cases in the past day, adding 12 infections and taking its active case count to 632.
Kerala continues to report the highest number of active cases at 1,309, followed by Gujarat with 1,046. Maharashtra remains among the most affected states, with 5,443 active cases.
Karnataka saw the largest single-day drop, with 187 fewer cases, while Rajasthan reported a decline of 83 cases in the same period.

PGIMER: Covid-19 under control in India
Covid-19 is currently under control in India, with no new cases reported over the past week, according to Dr Vivek Lal, Director of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).
Speaking to ANI, Dr Lal attributed the decline in cases to the robust vaccination drive led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 'We are fully prepared for Covid-19, but the situation is clearly improving. I don't think a single patient has tested positive in the last week,' he said.
Dr Lal credited India's ongoing vaccination campaign for maintaining immunity and reducing case severity.
Scientists monitor new subvariants behind latest surge
The National Institute of Virology (NIV) has begun genome sequencing and isolation of four new Omicron subvariants believed to be behind the recent spike in cases.
Genome sequencing helps determine the complete genetic makeup of viruses and track mutations that impact transmissibility and vaccine efficacy.
Dr Naveen Kumar, director of the Pune-based NIV, said this effort would assess whether existing vaccines remain effective or require updates. 'So far, the new variants do not appear to cause severe disease,' he noted.
He added that isolating the strains would aid in evaluating vaccine formulation, but any decision to update vaccines lies with policymakers following expert consultations.
Experts recommend targeted boosters, not mass drives
Public health experts have advised against a mass booster campaign, recommending targeted doses for high-risk groups such as the elderly, immunocompromised individuals, and those with chronic illnesses.
They said India's hybrid immunity—developed from both past infections and vaccinations—provides sufficient protection for the general population.
While the national outlook remains positive, officials cautioned that isolated clusters of infections are still emerging and should be monitored.

Virtual scientists in a virtual lab at Stanford University are coming up with unorthodox ways to address clinical challenges, researchers reported on Tuesday in Nature. The virtual lab is modeled after a well-established Stanford School of Medicine research group, complete with a principal investigator and seasoned scientists, the report says. As in human-run research labs, the virtual lab has regular meetings during which agents generate ideas and engage in a conversational back-and-forth. They also have one-on-one meetings, allowing the virtual lab members to meet with the virtual principal investigator individually to discuss ideas. Unlike human meetings, the virtual gatherings take a few seconds or minutes. When humans tasked the virtual team with devising a better vaccine for the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, they equipped the virtual scientists with tools and software to stimulate creative 'thinking' skills. The virtual scientists even created their own wish list. 'They would ask for access to certain tools, and we'd build it into the model to let them use it,' study leader James Zou said in a statement. Instead of opting for the usual vaccine design using an antibody, the AI team came up with using a nanobody, an antibody fragment that's smaller and simpler. 'From the beginning of their meetings, the AI scientists decided that nanobodies would be a more promising strategy,' Zou said. 'They said nanobodies are typically much smaller than antibodies, so that makes the machine learning scientist's job much easier," Zou said, "because when you computationally model proteins, working with smaller molecules means you can have more confidence in modeling and designing them.' When humans created the AI researchers' nanobody in a real-world lab, they found it was stable and could attach itself to one of the COVID virus variants more tightly than existing antibodies - a key factor in determining vaccine effectiveness. Aside from the initial prompt, the main guideline consistently given to the AI lab members was budget-related. Zou estimates that he or his lab members intervene about 1% of the time. 'I don't want to tell the AI scientists exactly how they should do their work. That really limits their creativity,' Zou said. 'I want them to come up with new solutions and ideas that are beyond what I would think about.'

Delhi gets cleanest July air in 7 years as average AQI drops to 78: CAQM

Delhi recorded its cleanest July air in seven years with the average Air Quality Index (AQI) falling to 78, in the 'satisfactory' category, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) said on Thursday. The AQI this July was even better than 2020, when pollution levels had dropped significantly due to restrictions on movement and industrial activity during to the COVID-19 lockdown. According to the CAQM, the average AQI for July in previous years stood at 104 in 2018, 134 in 2019, 84 in 2020, 110 in 2021, 87 in 2022, 84 in 2023 and 96 in 2024. The month also saw the highest number of days with 'satisfactory' air quality, 29 this year compared to 16 in 2018, 12 in 2019, 25 in 2020, 20 in 2021, 25 in 2022, 26 in 2023 and 17 in 2024. For the January-July period, Delhi reported significant improvement in air quality with the average AQI dropping to 184 from 204 in 2024 and 183 in 2023. The AQI during the same period was 209 in 2022, 205 in 2021, 159 in 2020, 215 in 2019 and 217 in 2018. There was not a single day with an AQI above 400 this year. In contrast, such days were recorded multiple times in previous years. The city also witnessed its lowest levels of PM2.5 and PM10 between January and July this year. The PM2.5 concentration averaged 79 micrograms per cubic metre, the lowest since 2018 except for the lockdown year. It was 94 in 2024, 83 in 2023, 93 in 2022, 97 in 2021, 73 in 2020, 99 in 2019 and 103 in 2018. Similarly, PM10 levels averaged 180 micrograms per cubic metre, compared to 209 in 2024, 184 in 2023, 218 in 2022, 210 in 2021, 147 in 2020, 224 in 2019 and 234 in 2018. The CAQM said favourable meteorological conditions and coordinated efforts to control and abate air pollution contributed to the significant improvement. The commission added that measures would be intensified to sustain and further enhance air quality in the coming months.
