Actress said Noel Clarke would use Bafta to ‘lure women to lair', court told
Actress Jing Lusi told the Guardian that Noel Clarke would use an honorary Bafta to 'dupe girls and lure them back to his lair' or use it to 'silence them', the High Court has heard.
Ms Lusi, who starred in ITV thriller Red Eye, told the newspaper it was 'terrifying' that Clarke was due to be given an honorary Bafta in 2021.
The Gangs Of London actress is the latest witness to give evidence in Clarke's libel battle against Guardian News and Media (GNM).
Clarke is suing the publisher of the Guardian over seven articles and a podcast, including an article in April 2021 that said 20 women who knew him professionally had come forward with allegations of misconduct.
The Doctor Who actor, 49, denies the allegations and claims several people who have made allegations against him are part of a conspiracy to defame him.
On Friday, audio of a conversation between Ms Lusi and Guardian journalists weeks before the articles were published was played in court, where she discussed Bafta's announcement that it would give Clarke the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema Award.
In the conversation, she said the award was 'a loaded gun'.
She said: 'He is either going to use it to dupe girls and lure them back to his lair or use it to silence them.'
She continued: 'It is a double-edged sword he is going to bring down on women.'
Referring to Clarke's first Bafta win in 2009, Ms Lusi also said that he 'dined out on that ticket', and that he 'could not stop talking about it' when the pair worked together on a film in 2018.
In court, Clarke's barrister, Philip Williams, said that Ms Lusi's claims were 'outrageous', and asked whether she wished to withdraw the 'lair' allegation.
Ms Lusi replied: 'No.'
Mr Williams later said: 'You were part of the campaign against Mr Clarke's Bafta.
'That was fuelled by jealousy, spite and the fact you thought that he was mediocre.'
Ms Lusi replied: 'That is not correct.'
The court in London was told that Clarke and Ms Lusi worked together on the film SAS: Red Notice, which was filmed in Budapest, Hungary.
In her witness statement, Ms Lusi said that at a dinner with Clarke and others during filming, she said she was aspiring to become a writer and suggested they could do a read-through of a script she had written.
In her statement, she said: 'Noel seemed keen at the idea, so I asked 'where?', to which he responded, without missing a beat, 'in my bed' or 'in my bedroom'.
'I was taken aback and said 'what?' and he repeated 'in my bedroom', the second time playing mock shy, sipping on this drink. This was all in front of the others.'
In court, Mr Williams said: 'The opportunity was there to go through the script.'
He continued: 'He would read the script through in front of other people. There would be no reason to separate you off.'
Ms Lusi replied: 'I did not have the script with me. I did not mean right there at that dinner.'
She continued: 'He said something that was not about the work but sexualising a legitimate idea I had involving other actors.'
She added: 'He turned it into a sexual connotation.'
Ms Lusi also later claimed that at the same dinner, Clarke asked to look at her hands, which she refused.
She claimed Clarke replied: 'Why? You won't let a black man touch you?'
In court, Mr Williams told Ms Lusi that Clarke 'never said' the comment, to which Ms Lusi replied: 'He absolutely did. I found it horrifying.'
Mr Williams suggested to Ms Lusi that during her and Clarke's time in Budapest, the pair engaged in 'sexual banter and conversation', which she 'volunteered'.
Ms Lusi told the court that she had made some disclosures about her sex life to Clarke, but described herself as a 'prude' and said he 'had a way of making the most innocuous thing sexual' and was 'very probing'.
In her witness statement, Ms Lusi then described another dinner between the pair in Budapest at which Clarke 'told me in explicit terms that he had fantasised about me, describing to me what he wanted to do to me', which she said left her 'feeling so disgusted'.
She later claimed he threatened her, stating: 'When I rebutted what Noel had said, that's when the threat came.
'He said something to the effect of 'don't tell anyone about this, or I will find out about it. It's a small world, I know everyone, if you do tell anyone I will find out about it and I'll come for you' or 'I'll get you.' It was a clear threat.
'I think I agreed to what he asked, more out of shock and disbelief in the moment than out of fear.'
In court, Mr Williams asked Ms Lusi why she did not confront Clarke the following day, to which she responded: 'You are asking me why I did not confront the man who I felt had harassed me and threatened me.'
She continued: 'I think he knew he was out of order. If he did not know that, why did he silence me?'
She added: 'I did not feel comfortable.'
The hearing before Mrs Justice Steyn is due to conclude in April, with a decision expected in writing at a later date.

Emmerdale's Cain and Tracy unite to expose Nate killer - with bad news for John
Emmerdale star Amy Walsh has revealed 'moving' new scenes see Cain Dingle and Tracy Robinson realise they're both innocent, and work begins on exposing Nate's real killer One star has revealed that Nate Robinson's killer on Emmerdale could finally face their downfall. Amy Walsh revealed new scenes coming up on the ITV soap will see Nate's grieving dad Cain Dingle and Nate's wife Tracy Robinson finally put aside their accusations against one another. Both of them have become suspects according to villagers, and Tracy was framed by Nate's real killer John Sugden with Nate's phone planted in her home. But speaking exclusively to The Mirror, Amy, who plays Tracy, warned John's game could be up. Not only did she reveal a new suspect would be under the spotlight, but she confirmed that Cain and Tracy do in fact address John on their very own suspect list. After "nasty" scenes continue between Cain and his daughter-in-law, a truce will eventually air that sees them band together to get justice for Nate. With scenes still being filmed now, we have months of "drama" ahead the star revealed. The pair will unite to try and figure out what really happened to Nate, and it could be bad news for killer John as he finds himself on their list. Amy told us: "Tracy and Cain do a little list together of who it could it be. "We have ruled out some people we know." Asked about John, Amy teased: "That was left on a bit of a cliffhanger actually. He's the next name on the list..." Before we get to see the dynamic duo figuring things out, there's some "feisty" and "nasty" moments. Amy warned: "Tracy is feisty. The stuff she gets away with doing to Cain, I was nervous on set! I can't believe I'm doing this to Cain Dingle! "But it's all brilliant, there's such brilliant scenes. It gets really nasty between us and then there's a really nice arc in the story eventually, where things will become a bit clearer. I can't say too much but there is a lot to look out for." Amy revealed that one other character would find themselves in the spotlight and accused, while she didn't name them or give away if it was John. She explained: "It's a bit of a rollercoaster. There is a shift with some new evidence that comes into play, but we don't know if it's evidence planted by John. "Someone else might be put in the frame by John and it's neither of them, Cain or Tracy. So there is another twist and turn there. To be honest we're still filming stuff so we have only just been filming the bits where Tracy is accepting that it's not Cain and they're thinking who else it could be ." There's emotional scenes on the way too as Tracy and Cain bond over their grief. She said: "We've done a few scenes now where they finally have got to the point where they trust each other again. "It's really moving actually as it's two people who have lost someone they've loved and they are trying to get to the truth and get him justice." Tracy faces turmoil too, guilty over not realising Nate hadn't abandoned them after all. She said: "There is so much regret from Tracy and shame and guilt, because she's spoken of him so badly. She thought he had abandoned his family. That's what is really hard for her now, how does she get over that and move on? "There's really heartbreaking stuff ahead. I'm finding it so emotional filming this stuff. We loved Jurell [Carter] so much and his character was well liked, and he was such a wonderful dad to Frankie. It's so sad but it's the way it goes unfortunately! Never say you wanna leave cos you'll be dumped in a lake!"

The Chase star Paul Sinha 'loses ITV' 100k after record-breaking fail on show
ITV The Chase' most recently aired episode saw two contestants defeat Paul Sinha in the final chase and take home the eye-watering 100k prize which is one of the biggest wins in the show's history. The Chase fans were left baffled as they witnessed a record-breaking event in game show history when guests Karen and Ian walked away with a whopping £100,000, marking it as one of the show's biggest ever wins. The thrilling episode featuring Karen and Ian first aired on the ITV show in September 2024 where the duo went head to head in an intense showdown against chaser Paul Sinha, better known as the The Sinnerman. Broadcast again on Thursday night on June 12, viewers who hadn't already seen the episode were left on the "edge of seats" as the two other contestants were quickly booted out after failing to get past the first round of The Chase. Making it through to the final leg, the stakes couldn't have been higher when Sinha, 54, was set to beat the team with just one correct answer left to go. Host Bradley Walsh asked: "Lesley Manville played the widow Cathy in what BBC sitcom?" Sinha answered Last of the Summer wine, which was incorrect, offering Karen and Ian a chance to get it right. However, the duo unfortunately mixed up sitcoms with soaps, leaving them confused and unable to claim the point, the Express reports. Despite their incorrect answer and Sinha desperately shouting out a last-second attempt, time ran out and Karen and Ian were declared the winners of an eye-watering £100,000. The pair were left visibly in shock at the incredible amount of prize money they had just secured. Karen was left at a loss of words, only managing to whisper: "Oh my God!" Bradley was also left baffled by the result as he commented on the nail-biting finish. He said: "That was close. Six attempts to push back, only two executed. The chaser needed one.' Chaser Paul said he was thrilled for the pair, despite his failure to beat them, and joked he'd 'lost' ITV £100,000. He congratulated them and said they were both "fantastic" players. Ian and Karen's impressive win is one of the biggest payouts in the show's history, with each of them walking away with £50k. Viewers watching at home rushed to social media to express their thoughts with many remarking that Paul 'The Sinnerman' Sinha had squashed his chances. One fan wrote:: "Paul messed that one up, played stupid for time and to create some tension - and ultimately fcked it up! Well done Ian and Karen…" Another viewer added: "Edge of seat this." Meanwhile, a third user remarked: "Sinnerman fell apart Well done them two." Reflecting on past wins over the ITV show's 16-year run so far, the largest in 2023 saw a trio split a £120k pot, taking home £40k after beating chaser Mark Labbett in a rare win. Another memorable victory occurred in the final chase of 2018 when team members Gayna, Tim, Luca, and Diane took home an impressive £100k between them. When it comes to one-man teams, the most unforgettable win was when a 20-year-old player name Eden bagged a whopping £75k. In a one-on-one face-off against chaser Darragh Ennis, Eden established an 18-step lead and secured the largest single-player win ever on the show. The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV and is available to stream on ITVX.
