Carnival, Royal Caribbean divert cruises to avoid Hurricane Erin
All the signs were there last week as the tropical system that would become Hurricane Erin rapidly strengthened on a westward path in the Atlantic — hurricane season was about to start disrupting cruise vacations.
First, Royal Caribbean made a proactive move to ensure smoother sailing for its Aug. 14 cruise from Baltimore aboard Vision of the Seas, which was scheduled to overnight in Bermuda from Aug. 16 – 17 before heading to The Bahamas. The cruise line opted to sail to Florida for the weekend instead of Bermuda, allowing for a safer course to The Bahamas this week.
Although Bahamas cruises will still deal with rough seas as Hurricane Erin churns up the Atlantic, The Bahamas will be a safer place to sail this week than Bermuda.Cruise passengers sailing to The Bahamas should also prepare for less-than-ideal beach days as the massive Hurricane Erin passes to the east of the islands on a path north that will take it between Bermuda and the U.S. East Coast later in the week.
Even if Bahamas cruise ports remain open and the sun is shining, cruise passengers and other vacationers visiting Bahamas beaches should be mindful of a hidden and highly dangerous hurricane hazard — rip currents.
Powerful waves generated by Hurricane Erin will bring life-threatening rip currents along the beaches of The Bahamas, Bermuda, much of the U.S. East Coast, and even Atlantic Canada over the next several days.

Hurricane Erin forces Outer Banks evacuations as beaches close along the East Coast
Holly Andrzejewski hadn't yet welcomed her and her family's first guests to the Atlantic Inn on Hatteras Island when she had to start rescheduling them — as Hurricane Erin neared North Carolina's Outer Banks on Tuesday and threatened to whip up wild waves and tropical force winds. Andrzejewski and her husband purchased the bed-and-breakfast, known as the oldest inn on the island, less than a week ago. By Monday they had brought in all the outdoor furniture and made sure their daughter and her boyfriend, who are the innkeepers, had generators, extra water and flashlights as they stayed behind to keep an eye on the property. "It's just one of those things where you know this is always a possibility and it could happen, and you just make the best out of it. Otherwise you wouldn't live at the beach," said Andrzejewski, who will also remain on the island, at her home about a 15 minutes' drive away. Although the season's first Atlantic hurricane is expected to stay offshore, evacuations were ordered on barrier islands along the Carolina coast as authorities warned the storm could churn up dangerous rip currents from Florida to the New England coast. Tropical storm and surge watches were issued for much of the Outer Banks. Coastal flooding was expected to begin Tuesday and continue through Thursday. The evacuations on Hatteras Island and Ocracoke came at the height of tourist season on the thin stretch of low-lying barrier islands that jut into the Atlantic Ocean and are increasingly vulnerable to storm surges. In 2019, Hurricane Dorian caused record amounts of damage in Ocracoke. Last year, Hurricane Ernesto stayed offshore but created high surf and swells. Tommy Hutcherson, who owns the community's only grocery store, said the island has mostly bounced back. He's optimistic this storm won't be as destructive. "But you just never know. I felt the same way about Dorian and we really got smacked," he said. With Hurricane Erin, there are concerns that several days of heavy surf, high winds and waves could wash out parts of the main highway. Some routes could be impassable for days. Meanwhile, ocean conditions are dangerous off the Outer Banks and the East Coast. The Wrightsville Beach Fire Department, near Wilmington, North Carolina, said officials rescued between 60 and 70 swimmers on Monday. There were no injuries or fatalities recorded. Beaches along the East Coast have closed to swimming, citing rough waters. Belmar, Bay Head and Island Beach State Park, all in New Jersey, banned swimming because of dangerous surf conditions and strong rip currents. The National Weather Service issued a high rip current risk through at least midweek. Wave heights are expected to reach eight to 15 feet, with conditions worsening as the storm moves closer.

Map: Here's the latest forecast path of Hurricane Erin
Hurricane Erin will bring life-threatening surf and rip-currents to parts of the U.S. coast this week, despite its path keeping it well offshore, according to the forecasters with the National Hurricane Center. Tropical storm and storm surge watches have been issued for the Outer Banks of North Carolina. High seas and rip-currents are possible from Florida through New England. As of early Tuesday, Erin was a Category 3 hurricane near the Bahamas, with tropical-storm-force winds extended out hundreds of miles from its core. Despite some slight shifting in Hurricane Erin's forecast track, it is still expected to take a path roughly midway between the U.S. East Coast and the Bahamas. Here's the latest forecast track:

Royal Caribbean picks new ship godmother after Diana Ross bails
Royal Caribbean picks new ship godmother after Diana Ross bails originally appeared on TravelHost. Just a few days after music icon Diana Ross backed out of her role as godmother to Royal Caribbean's new Icon Class ship, Star of the Seas, the cruise line announced a fitting replacement for the honor. As Ross canceled her planned appearance at Star of the Seas' naming ceremony and showcase sailing on Aug. 20 citing unforeseen circumstances, Royal Caribbean scrambled to find a suitable new godmother for the revolutionary ship with just days to go before the big event.A cruise ship godmother is a meaningful role that's steeped in maritime tradition. During the ship's naming ceremony, the godmother participates in an iconic moment — christening the vessel by breaking a bottle of Champagne over its bow. The ceremonial act symbolically launches the ship with a blessing of good fortune and protection for all who sail on her. Historically, the honorary title of cruise ship godmother has been given to influential women from royalty, Hollywood icons, and pop stars to legendary athletes and famous activists. While many might have expected another music superstar to take the stage at Star of the Seas' naming ceremony as Ross bowed out, Royal Caribbean executives went in a different direction, drawing inspiration from the stars in the sky as they picked Star of the Seas' new Kellie Gerardi named godmother of Star of the Seas Astronaut Kellie Gerardi, who inspires millions of followers on social media, will now serve as godmother for Royal Caribbean's Star of the Seas. Research astronaut, payload specialist and mom Kellie Gerardi will join us to officially name and celebrate Star of the Seas, its crew, and the millions who will make memories on the world's best family vacation for years to come,' Royal Caribbean announced in a social media post on Aug. 15. The 90th woman in history to visit space, Gerardi is also one of the world's first payload specialists to fly on a commercial spacecraft. One of USA Today's 2025 Women of the Year, Gerardi inspires girls to learn about space and shoot for the stars. She's a mom to daughter Delta V and author of the children's book series Luna Royal Caribbean fans applauded the cruise line for pivoting to pick a godmother worthy of out-of-this-world family vacations. 'Now this is a godmother. Someone the kids can look up to,' Cheryl Fields Rose commented on Royal Caribbean's Facebook post about Gerardi. 'This is a great pivot. Love seeing women in science too!
