Ryan Coogler's latest movie 'Sinners,' continues to dominate the box office and be a hot topic on social media as well. In it's opening weekend, the film earned $48 million domestically, which was the most successful for any original film this decade. In it's second weekend, the movies only had a 6% drop in sales, in comparison to drops that are typically in the range of 40-50% in the second weekend.
Thus far, this horror movie has already grossed $161 million worldwide.
Among the many fans praising the film and providing commentary on social media and Reddit, were acclaimed actors Tom Cruise and Kevin Bacon.
With all the chatter and accolades for the film, it is important to highlight the bigger implications of the films success.
Representation has long been a topic of discussion in both media and marketing, as consumers continue to express their desire for more of it. One research study showed that 76% of consumers said representation in marketing is important for the brands they engage with and buy from.
With Sinners' predominantly Black cast and Black director, fans who are part of the Black community went out in a larger percentage of numbers.
This isn't just the case for Sinners'. The same thing happened when a predominantly Black cast and director were introduced into the Marvel Universe with Black Panther. The film shattered records and as of 2018 when it was released, it was the highest grossing super hero film of all time in the U.S.
Black Panther was the first Marvel Movie I ever saw, and I went with a delegation of about twenty other Black expats while I was living in Argentina. We all even dressed up for the occasion.
But representation isn't just important to the Black community. Other underrepresented and underserved communities showed up to the box office in large numbers when there were casts were predominantly from their culture.
Crazy Rich Asians which featured a predominantly Asian cast and director and was released in 2018 was the highest grossing romantic comedy of the decade. And Coco, a movied produced by Disney Pixar and featured an all Latino cast, was at the time the highest grossing film of all-time in Mexico (beating out Avengers), and won two Academy awards.
Another common misconception that often prevents brands from engaging in making their marketing more inclusive is the notion that if you feature more people from under reperesented and underserved communities, you'll limit your reach.
The thought behind that belief, is that if people who aren't Black, Asian, or who have a disability see people who are Black, Asian, or people with disabilities in an ad, media, or film, they will feel like it 'isn't for them' and won't engage.
But that notion isn't true, and the success of Sinners' and other movies mentioned in the previous section prove that's the case. While the Black community has turned out in high numbers to see the Sinners' film, the film wouldn't have achieved the success it has if that community was the only people going to see it. The film has had broad appeal with a broad diversity of audiences. That's not just true in the U.S., but worldwide also.
Showcasing talent from underrepresented and underserved communities does not niche your content to only be relevant to those communities. There are plenty of examples of talent in both media and brand campaigns where talent from underrepresented and underserved communities have had mass appeal and often headline general market campaigns. Here's one from Amazon Alexa.
Some brands even understand the social appeal of this talent, and have made 'niche consumers" their lead consumer. They do this because they know, the representation will be important to convert people from underrepresented and underserved communities, and the appeal of the talent can also convert the masses as well.
Representation and matters. But not all representation is created equal. One of the things consumers have said many times is their desire for characters who are like them, and that move away from traditional stereotypes and tropes. Consumers, particularly those from underrepresented and underserved communities want to see more main character energy from the talent brands and filmmakers put forth.
One of the remarkable aspects of the Sinners' movies, is that it is an original story, a departure from the remakes and adaptations that plague Hollywood of late. And through this original story, there are a number of different characters that have a degree of depth to them, that fans have been compelled to take to social media to process, share notes, and provide commentary.
When you give people, especially those from under represented and underserved communities the kinds of characters and storylines they crave, they will help promote your product for you. The amount of earned media you'll gain will skyrocket.
The Sinners' movie, like other standouts before it, showcased that if you give consumers what they want, especially the ones most brands crave, they will reward you for it handsomely.

Jamie Foxx Has One Question For Sean Combs in Midst of N.Y. Racketeering Trial: ‘Why You So Nasty, Diddy?'

Jamie Foxx is not pulling punches when it comes to his thoughts on the Sean 'Diddy' Combs' New York sex trafficking and racketeering trial. During a recent appearance at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles, the actor/singer lashed out at the disgraced former music mogul who he once honored at Diddy's 2008 Hollywood Walk of Fame induction ceremony. 'Diddy is fu–in' crazy, huh?' Foxx said in footage shared by Urban Hollywood. 'I don't know if he is going to jail, but he is a nasty motherf–er. Am I right? Especially for us… white people like, 'It's cool,' but for Black people… that was our hero. All that g–damn baby oil, boy! Why you so nasty, Diddy?' When officers raided Combs' homes in Los Angeles and Miami last March prosecutors said they found drugs as well as more than 1,000 bottles of lubricant and baby oil. More from Billboard 50 Cent Keeps His Promise by Posting the 'Really Bad' Things Diddy Has Said About Donald Trump Jessie J Reveals 'Early Breast Cancer' Diagnosis: 'Cancer Sucks in Any Form' Big Thief Announce New Album, 'Double Infinity' The comments from Foxx about the shocking testimony in the Combs trial in reference to the rapper's marathon 'Freak Off' sex parties is relevant because in 2023 rumors circulated that Combs allegedly poisoned Foxx, leading to the actor's hospitalization for what was later confirmed to be a stroke. Foxx opened up about the rumors surrounding his mystery illness last month in a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, shooting down the allegations that Diddy tried to have him killed via poisoning. 'I'm in f—ing perfect shape. [I saw things like,] 'Puffy tried to kill me.' No, Puffy didn't try to kill me. When they said I was a clone, that made me flip,' Foxx said. 'I'm sitting in the hospital bed, like, 'These b—h-a– motherf—ers are trying to clone me.'' While a spokesperson for Combs did not reply to Billboard's request for a comment on the allegations, his team has repeatedly said the rumor was false and unfounded. Foxx also addressed the allegations in his What Had Happened Was… Netflix special in December, in which he said, 'The internet said Puffy was trying to kill me, that's what the internet was saying. I know what you thinking, 'Diddy?' Hell no, I left them parties early. I was out by 9. 'Something don't look right… it looks slippery in here!' The Combs trial is in its fourth week and on Wednesday (June 4) Bryana Bongolan, a friend of Diddy's ex, prosecution star witness Cassie Ventura, alleged that Diddy dangled her over a 17th-floor apartment balcony in 2016 before shoving her into the balcony's furniture. Combs is facing five criminal counts of racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion and transportation to engage in prostitution, charges that could land him in prison for the rest of his life; Combs has denied the allegations against him. ACROSS THE COUNTRY The community effort and attention around 'Sinners,' a blockbuster horror movie, became an opportunity to talk about investing in the Delta town that built the blues. WHY WE'RE HERE We're exploring how America defines itself, one place at a time. 'Sinners,' a blockbuster movie about blues music and vampires, has brought new attention to a Mississippi Delta city working to rebuild itself. By Emily Cochrane Photographs by Rory Doyle Emily Cochrane and Rory Doyle reported from Clarksdale, Miss., after watching 'Sinners.' (No spoilers ahead.) Almost as soon as the supernatural horror movie 'Sinners' opened in April, word began to spread among the residents of Clarksdale, Miss. It wasn't just an ode to blues music, a showcase of Black Hollywood talent or a gory Southern vampire story. It was about them. It was about Clarksdale. The film and its worldwide success have brought a burst of attention to the small city in the Mississippi Delta, known as the birthplace of the blues. Set there in the 1930s, it follows twin brothers — both played by Michael B. Jordan — and vampires who are lured by the music performed in their juke joint. Clarksdale's unexpected moment in the spotlight has galvanized a number of young Black residents, some of whom successfully lobbied the director, Ryan Coogler, to visit last week and screen 'Sinners' at an auditorium. It has also gotten people there talking — not for the first time — about how to transform Clarksdale's rich musical history into economic growth that will benefit those who live and work there. ‘Something Beautiful' Trailer: Miley Cyrus Makes Her Directorial Debut with Pop Opera Feature

Miley Cyrus has been a mega-star for more than a decade but now the multihyphenate is adding another talent to her resume: director. Cyrus helms her pop opera feature 'Something Beautiful,' making her directorial debut with the 'one of a kind' cinematic experience that is 'fueled by fantasy,' as the logline teases. Cyrus co-directs with Jacob Bixenman and Brendan Walter. 'Something Beautiful' will feature 13 original songs from Cyrus' ninth studio album of the same name. The film is mixed by Alan Meyerson ('Dune Part One,' 'The Dark Knight') for a theatrical release. 'Mandy' breakout filmmaker Panos Cosmatos produces along with Cyrus and XYZ Films, in collaboration with Sony Music Vision, Columbia Records, and Live Nation. Benoît Debie is the cinematographer. 'My co-creators are all geniuses in their own right: from the masters of sound, Shawn Everett and Alan Meyerson, to one of cinema's most unique directors, Panos Cosmatos serving as a producer. Each collaborator has used their expertise to make this fantasy a reality.' 'Something Beautiful' will have its world premiere June 6 at the Tribeca Festival. The film follows the trend of visual albums with feature accompaniments: The Weeknd recently debuted 'Hurry Up Tomorrow' starring Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan to coincide with his album as well. As for the 'Something Beautiful' team, producer Cosmatos has his own feature in the works starring another first-time female director, Kristen Stewart, whose 'The Chronology of Water' wowed at Cannes. Stewart will star alongside Oscar Isaac in Cosmatos' '80s-set vampire rave drama 'Flesh of the Gods,' written by 'Se7en' screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker. The film centers on married couple Raoul (Isaac) and Alex (Stewart) who descend each evening from their luxury skyscraper condo and head into an electric nighttime realm of '80s Los Angeles, per the official synopsis. When they cross paths with a mysterious and enigmatic woman and her hard-partying cabal, Raoul and Alex are seduced into a glamorous, surrealistic world of hedonism, thrills, and violence. 'Flesh of the Gods' will be the fourth collaboration between Cosmatos and XYZ, including 'Something Beautiful.' 'Something Beautiful' will be released in theaters for one night only on June 12 from Trafalgar Releasing and Sony Music Vision. Check out the trailer below.
