Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. James Gunn responded to a rumor about the runtime of his upcoming film Superman on social media this week. Newsweek reached out to Gunn's representative via email for comment. The Context Gunn, 58, is the CEO of DC Studios and director of Superman, which will be released this summer. The first trailer for the highly anticipated film dropped in December and an extended sneak peek was shared during April's CinemaCon. The star-studded cast includes David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Guy Gardner. Prior to 2025's Superman, the most recent Superman films were 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, 2013's Man of Steel and 2006's Superman Returns. James Gunn speaks about the movie "Superman" during the CinemaCon 2025 Warner Bros Pictures presentation at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on April 1, 2025. VALERIE MACON/AFP via Getty Images What To Know On Wednesday, Gunn took to Threads to share an announcement about Superman. "Excited to bring @Superman to audiences in China on July 11," he wrote alongside a poster of the film in Chinese. In the comments of his post, Threads user @dcdomain wrote: "Hey james is the runtime for Superman locked? There's rumors that it's 2h2minutes." In response, Gunn said, "That is not correct. It's almost totally locked - meaning we're just finishing a couple VFX shots over the weekend - but that's not the running time." "Thank you James," @dcdomain wrote back. "Can't wait!" Last month, Gunn hinted at what fans can expect to see in the film. "The central conflict revolves a lot around Lex Luthor's attempts to defeat and destroy Superman," he told Entertainment Weekly in April. "I think Lex Luthor thinks of Superman in the way that an artist thinks of AI. Here's this guy who's this [incredible] genius scientist who's worked his whole life to become one of the richest, most powerful men in the world, and he does it all to be lauded. I mean, he wants to be the greatest, and suddenly this jerk comes in wearing a cape with a lantern jaw and a cocky grin, and he just takes all of the oxygen out of the room, out of the room of Earth, and it creates a burning hatred in the guy." What People Are Saying In the comments under Gunn's Threads response, many fans said they hope for an even longer runtime. @ "Thank Goodness! I really want this movie to be 2:20 or more, coz I want to spend more time in this world of James Gunn's Superman and with several of its characters!" @fahimmia01: "Hope its around 2h 30m long." @rickyjmarc: "Certainly hope it's a little longer than that. I haven't seen Superman on my theater screen in over a decade. Long overdue. Worth the runtime." @batmanvengeance2024: "I hope it's longer than 2 hour 10 minutes..." @malg.1234: "I would watch 5 hrs of this movie ngl even though obviously that's not possible." What Happens Next Superman hits theaters on July 11.

South Korean bestseller A Thousand Blues inks six-figure film deal with Warner Bros

SEOUL - South Korean author Cheon Seon-ran's heartwarming science-fiction novel A Thousand Blues is headed for the big screen in the US. Hubble, the literary imprint of Seoul-based East-Asia Publishing, said on May 10 that it had signed a six-figure film adaptation deal with Warner Bros Pictures, and that the book is 'now on track to meet a global audience on screen'. The Hollywood studio behind blockbuster franchises such as Harry Potter (2001 to 2011) and Dune (2021 to present) is said to have been drawn to A Thousand Blues' 'original and compelling' storytelling. Directors including Celine Song (Past Lives, 2023), Greta Gerwig (Barbie, 2023) and Alfonso Cuaron (Roma, 2018) are among the candidates being considered for the adaptation, according to the publisher. Set in 2035, A Thousand Blues imagines a near future where humanoid robots have become part of everyday life. At its heart is the story of Collie, a humanoid jockey, and its racehorse, Today. Both are nearing the end of their usefulness as Today faces euthanasia due to failing joints. Their journey toward an uncertain future becomes entwined with that of a mother and her two daughters, who step in to help. The novel explores themes of grief, healing and what it means to slow down in a world obsessed with speed and performance. First published in 2020, A Thousand Blues won the Grand Prize at the 4th Korea Sci-Fi Literature Award and became a runaway bestseller, with over 200,000 copies sold in South Korea to date. The translation rights have been sold to more than 10 countries and regions, with recent publications in Japan, Germany, Taiwan, China and the UK. A Thousand Blues was also adapted for the stage - produced as a play by the National Theatre Company of Korea and as a musical by the Seoul Performing Arts Company in 2024. Cheon, 32, who holds a master's degree in creative writing from Dankook University in South Korea, made her debut with Broken Bridge in 2019. Met Gala: Damson Idris' bold arrival at iconic fashion event is nod at his Tommy Hilfiger role

Damson Idris attended the 2025 Met Gala in New York City, and was pictured arriving in a APXGP racing car, which is a reference to his upcoming film F1, which also stars Brad Pitt British actor Damson Idris made a bold arrival at the Met Gala. The 33-year-old star, who has been in Black Mirror, Doctors, Casualty and other dramas, rocked up wearing racing suit, accessorised with a red, white and blue helmet featuring 20,000 Swarovski crystals. He also arrived in a APXGP racing car, while most of the other attendees in New York City were seen pulling up in black SUVs. ‌ It is because Damson, who was born in Peckham, southeast London, is set to star in blockbuster F1 later this year. He has already filmed scenes for the Warner Bros Pictures movie, which will also star Brad Pitt, and will tell the tale of Sonny Hayes, a Formula One driver who has to retire following a crash. ‌ Tommy Hilfiger has teamed up with the film ahead of its release. Damson, who last year won a NAACP Image Award for his role in crime drama Snowfall, became the clothing brand's menswear ambassador in April 2023. Full list of NAACP Image Awards nominations as Oprah Winfrey's The Color Purple nabs 16 nods A Hilfiger spokesperson said: "We're excited to partner with the highly anticipated film, F1. Damson Idris stars as Joshua Pierce, a driver for the fictional APXGP team, and we wanted his Met Gala entrance to reflect the same cinematic energy." Both the racing driver getup and Damson's second costume - a rouge tuxedo - were emblazoned with the Hilfiger logo. The trousers included a side satin stripe and slight flare, a nod to "modern dandyism" and the theme of this year's Costume Institute exhibition, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." The young actor accessorised the look with a bespoke brooch and jewellery from his personal brand Didris. "The Met is all about making a statement, and the reveal was everything: stepping out of the suit to unveil a sharp, tailored tuxedo in Tommy tartan — seamlessly shifting from high-octane to high fashion. From start line to spotlight, it captured the essence of both worlds," the Hilfiger statement added. Joseph Kosinski, of Top Gun: Maverick fame, directs F1, which sees Brad portray the lead character. Damson has a large supporting role, as does Irish actress Kerry Condon, best known for starring in 2022 film The Banshees of Inisherin. Held on the first Monday of May each year, the Met Gala - the annual haute couture fundraising festival - is Christmas for fashion fans. Guests' attempts at following the theme (or failing miserably) are scrutinised by sartorial critics worldwide, with men who turn up in boring black tuxedos often taking a bashing online. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour along with actor Colman Domingo, F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, rapper A$AP Rocky, musician-turned-fashion-mogul Pharrell Williams and honorary chair LeBron James co-chaired the event this year.

‘Sinners' Movie Proves (Once Again) What Consumers Really Want

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - APRIL 03: (L-R) Li Jun Li, Jayme Lawson, Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo, ... More Michael B. Jordan, Wunmi Mosaku, Omar Benson Miller, Ryan Coogler, Miles Caton and Jack O'Connell attend the Warner Bros Pictures "Sinners" New York Premiere at AMC Lincoln Square Theater on April 03, 2025 in New York City. (Photo by) Ryan Coogler's latest movie 'Sinners,' continues to dominate the box office and be a hot topic on social media as well. In it's opening weekend, the film earned $48 million domestically, which was the most successful for any original film this decade. In it's second weekend, the movies only had a 6% drop in sales, in comparison to drops that are typically in the range of 40-50% in the second weekend. Thus far, this horror movie has already grossed $161 million worldwide. Among the many fans praising the film and providing commentary on social media and Reddit, were acclaimed actors Tom Cruise and Kevin Bacon. With all the chatter and accolades for the film, it is important to highlight the bigger implications of the films success. Representation has long been a topic of discussion in both media and marketing, as consumers continue to express their desire for more of it. One research study showed that 76% of consumers said representation in marketing is important for the brands they engage with and buy from. With Sinners' predominantly Black cast and Black director, fans who are part of the Black community went out in a larger percentage of numbers. This isn't just the case for Sinners'. The same thing happened when a predominantly Black cast and director were introduced into the Marvel Universe with Black Panther. The film shattered records and as of 2018 when it was released, it was the highest grossing super hero film of all time in the U.S. Black Panther was the first Marvel Movie I ever saw, and I went with a delegation of about twenty other Black expats while I was living in Argentina. We all even dressed up for the occasion. But representation isn't just important to the Black community. Other underrepresented and underserved communities showed up to the box office in large numbers when there were casts were predominantly from their culture. Crazy Rich Asians which featured a predominantly Asian cast and director and was released in 2018 was the highest grossing romantic comedy of the decade. And Coco, a movied produced by Disney Pixar and featured an all Latino cast, was at the time the highest grossing film of all-time in Mexico (beating out Avengers), and won two Academy awards. Another common misconception that often prevents brands from engaging in making their marketing more inclusive is the notion that if you feature more people from under reperesented and underserved communities, you'll limit your reach. The thought behind that belief, is that if people who aren't Black, Asian, or who have a disability see people who are Black, Asian, or people with disabilities in an ad, media, or film, they will feel like it 'isn't for them' and won't engage. But that notion isn't true, and the success of Sinners' and other movies mentioned in the previous section prove that's the case. While the Black community has turned out in high numbers to see the Sinners' film, the film wouldn't have achieved the success it has if that community was the only people going to see it. The film has had broad appeal with a broad diversity of audiences. That's not just true in the U.S., but worldwide also. Showcasing talent from underrepresented and underserved communities does not niche your content to only be relevant to those communities. There are plenty of examples of talent in both media and brand campaigns where talent from underrepresented and underserved communities have had mass appeal and often headline general market campaigns. Here's one from Amazon Alexa. Some brands even understand the social appeal of this talent, and have made 'niche consumers" their lead consumer. They do this because they know, the representation will be important to convert people from underrepresented and underserved communities, and the appeal of the talent can also convert the masses as well. Representation and matters. But not all representation is created equal. One of the things consumers have said many times is their desire for characters who are like them, and that move away from traditional stereotypes and tropes. Consumers, particularly those from underrepresented and underserved communities want to see more main character energy from the talent brands and filmmakers put forth. One of the remarkable aspects of the Sinners' movies, is that it is an original story, a departure from the remakes and adaptations that plague Hollywood of late. And through this original story, there are a number of different characters that have a degree of depth to them, that fans have been compelled to take to social media to process, share notes, and provide commentary. When you give people, especially those from under represented and underserved communities the kinds of characters and storylines they crave, they will help promote your product for you. The amount of earned media you'll gain will skyrocket. The Sinners' movie, like other standouts before it, showcased that if you give consumers what they want, especially the ones most brands crave, they will reward you for it handsomely.

‘Sinners' has phenomenal 2nd weekend as a 20-year-old 'Star Wars' movie takes 2nd place

This image released by Warner Bros Pictures shows Michael B. Jordan in a scene from "Sinners." (Warner Bros. Pictures via AP) By LINDSEY BAHR Horror movies are often one-week wonders at the box office, but Ryan Coogler's'Sinners' is defying the odds and proving to be true event cinema. In its second weekend in theaters, 'Sinners' earned $45 million in ticket sales from theaters in the U.S. and Canada, according to studio estimates Sunday. That's down a miniscule 6% from its Easter holiday launch, the smallest drop in any genre since 'Avatar' in 2009. Worldwide, 'Sinners' has now made $161.6 million. For the industry, the showing proves the film's reach has broadened beyond horror fans to mainstream audiences wanting to see what the hype is about. Last weekend, men made up 56% of the audience. This weekend, the gender divide narrowed to 50/50. Premium large format showings, like the 70mm IMAX screens, are also a big draw. IMAX screens worldwide accounted for some 21% of the second weekend globally, a nearly 9% increase from last weekend. The original ensemble movie, starring Michael B. Jordan as twins, rode into theaters on a wave of great reviews. And, to be fair, 'Sinners' isn't simply a horror film: It blends elements of drama, action and musical into its southern gothic milieu. 'That's one of the lowest second weekend holds for an overperforming wide release ever,' said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore. 'It's an absolute phenomenon." Hollywood expects significant drop off in a movie's second week of release. Even a 50% dip is considered a solid number, baked into the movie math. When it's anything less than that, it's notable. 'You can buy a great opening weekend with marketing, but if a movie doesn't have the goods, it'll drop off," Dergarabedian said. 'There's no greater barometer of success than a second weekend hold like this." The film was produced by Coogler's Proximity Media and Warner Bros., which handled the theatrical release. After some disappointments earlier in the year, it's the second major win for the studio after 'A Minecraft Movie' helped energize the box office earlier this month. 'Sinners' easily topped the biggest new competition this week: 'The Accountant 2,' a sequel starring Ben Affleck and released by Amazon MGM Studios, which opened in third place with an estimated $24.5 million in its first weekend. Gavin O'Connor directed the film, which played in 3,610 theaters in North America. Audiences gave it a promising A- CinemaScore. The film that beat 'The Accountant 2' for second place was a 20-year-old Star Wars movie: 'Revenge of the Sith.' The anniversary re-release took in an estimated $25.2 million over the weekend, with many sellouts reported, more than doubling last year's release of 'The Phantom Menace.' Internationally, it earned $17 million from 34 territories, giving it a $42.2 million global weekend. It's one of the top grossing re-releases ever. 'A Minecraft Movie' landed in fourth place with $22.7 million, bringing its domestic total to around $380 million. The scary video game adaptation 'Until Dawn' also opened this weekend to an estimated $8 million. Sony Pictures released the film, starring Ella Rubin and Michael Cimino, which has earned $18.1 million globally. The 'Minecraft' and 'Sinners' wins have meant a huge boost for the April box office, which is up 102% from April 2024. The annual box office is also up over 10% from last year after running at a double-digit deficit in March. And this is all happening right before the industry's summer movie season kicks off on May 2 with Disney's 'Thunderbolts.' 'There cannot be a better opening act for the summer movie season than this weekend,' Dergarabedian said. © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
