Freddie Mercury's 'secret daughter' feels he 'belonged to everyone'

Perth Now08-08-2025
A woman who claims to be Freddie Mercury's daughter believes he "belonged to everyone".
The Queen frontman died in November 1991, aged 45, and the woman - who is known only as B - has now explained that she "had to become an adult without him".
She told MailOnline: "After his death, I had to learn to live with the attacks against him, the misrepresentations of him, and with the feeling that my dad now belonged to everyone.
"I cried and mourned my dad, while fans all around the world mourned Freddie.
"When you are 15 years old. it's not easy.
"I had to become an adult without him, and live all the structuring moments and events without his support.
"For 30 years I had to build my life and family without him and accept that he wouldn't be there to share the happy moments with us. For 30 years, while the rest of the world was reinterpreting Mercury's life, his music and all that he had been, I needed to have my dad just for me and my family."
The woman claims that she was born in 1976 after Freddie had a fling with a close pal's wife. But Mary Austin - Freddie's one-time lover and close friend - has questioned her claims.
In response, B said: "I am devastated by Mary Austin's alleged response. For 34 years, the truth of Freddie's life has been distorted, twisted and rewritten, but she said nothing - with the exception of her comment about the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, which she called "artistic licence".
"Here, she has not yet read the book, yet she apparently makes this statement. I don't understand why."
B has detailed her life and experiences in a new book with Lesley Ann Jones.
The author said: "I am surprised by Mary Austin's response. As a journalist I approached her for interview countless times over many years, but she never once responded. In this book, however, there is only one voice: that of Freddie's daughter herself.
"The story is hers. The quotes are hers. Her source is the collection of 17 handwritten diaries that Freddie gave her three weeks before he died."

A little window into the past … JJ 'Boss' Simons, the founder of the Young Australia League, was drawn to the valley in which Araluen sits in 1902. His idea was to develop a weekend retreat where YAL members could enjoy some outdoor life. As YAL members travelled the world, they were asked to bring back plants for Araluen. The park gardens were developed to sit well with Canadian-style log cabins, water features and pergolas. The YAL has taken over the park with little more than the tracks left by timber cutters during the 1800s but, over more than 20 years, they laid the basis of what we see as Araluen and the park it is today. + The YAL is the oldest youth organisation in Western Australia. Mary Austin calls Freddie Mercury secret daughter claims 'astonishing'

Mary Austin has declared it would be "astonishing" if Freddie Mercury had fathered a secret daughter without her knowledge. A new book titled Love, Freddie by Lesley-Ann Jones claims the Queen frontman became a dad to a little girl - named only as B - following an affair with a friend's wife in 1976 and the child is said to have inherited diaries written by the singer in the run-up to her birth. However, Mary - who was close to the singer for two decades - is adamant it's unlikely Freddie could not have kept such huge news secret. She told The Sunday Times newspaper: "Freddie had a glorious openness, and I cannot imagine he would have wanted to, or been able to, keep such a joyful event a secret, either from me or other people closest to him ... "The truth is that I am simply not the guardian of such a secret. I've never known of any child, or of any diaries. If Freddie had indeed had a child without me knowing anything about it, that would be astonishing to me." She also insisted she had never seen Freddie write a diary and she would be "very surprised" if the singer had started a journal in his later years. Speaking about her decision to break her silence on the reports, Mary added: "As this particular narrative has grown, I had to say something to prevent my silence being interpreted as confirmation - speaking now is not a decision I have taken lightly. "I wanted to carefully consider everything being said so I could approach the topic responsibly, most of all for Freddie, who is not here to speak for himself.' The 49-year-old known as B provided a response to Mary's statements through the book's author Jones, saying: "I am devastated by Mary Austin's alleged response. "For 34 years, the truth of Freddie's life has been distorted, twisted and rewritten, but she said nothing … Here, she has not yet read the book, yet she apparently makes this statement. I don't understand why ..." In Love, Freddie, B admitted she struggled with the public mourning for the singer, who died of an AIDS-related illness when she was 15 years old. An extract from the book, due to be published in September and which was obtained by the Daily Mail, stated: "I cried and mourned my Dad, while fans all around the world mourned Freddie. "For 30 years I had to build my life and family without him and accept that he wouldn't be there to share the happy moments with us. "For 30 years, while the rest of the world was reinterpreting Mercury's life, his music and all that he had been, I needed to have my dad just for me and my family. How could I have spoken before?"
