Rich Hill to join Royals, pitch for record-tying 14th major league team: Source

New York Times21-07-2025
Rich Hill is on the verge of making a record-tying return to the major leagues with the Kansas City Royals, a league source with knowledge of the situation told The Athletic. The 45-year-old left-hander will join the team as a member of its taxi squad on Monday, and could pitch as soon as Tuesday.
Should he take the mound for Kansas City, he would tie Edwin Jackson's record for appearing in games with 14 MLB teams. Jackson passed Octavio Dotel for the honor of playing with the most teams in the majors in 2019.

Hill's first outing would also mark his 21st consecutive year with at least one game in the major leagues. He was briefly out of affiliated baseball in 2015, pitching in the independent Atlantic League before the start of his late-career renaissance.
Hill, a fourth-round pick of the Chicago Cubs in 2002, has been a journeyman since he last pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2019. After posting a 3.16 ERA across four seasons with the Dodgers and playing a pivotal role in that team's postseason success, Hill signed a series of one-year contracts, beginning with the Minnesota Twins ahead of 2020. He also joined the Tampa Bay Rays, Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Red Sox on separate deals. He was traded twice in that period, by the Rays to the New York Mets in late July 2021 and by the Pirates to the San Diego Padres at the 2023 deadline.
In addition to his original team, he also previously suited up in the majors for the Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians (now Guardians), Los Angeles Angels, New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics. Hill pitched in the major leagues last season with the Red Sox, but he had not signed to play this season until the Royals inked him to a minor-league deal in May.
Hill gave up 25 earned runs and posted a 1.62 WHIP in 42 innings over 11 starts for the Royals' Triple-A affiliate. He also struck out 48 batters, including 10 in five innings on July 14. The majority of the damage against Hill came in three starts. He has lasted at least five innings in six of his outings.
It's unclear what role Hill will serve for the Royals, whose rotation ranks second in baseball with a 3.36 ERA. But the staff recently lost starter Michael Lorenzen to the injured list with an oblique strain, and Cole Ragans, who was fourth in Cy Young Award voting last year, has been on the shelf with a rotator cuff strain since early June. Additionally, left-handed reliever Daniel Lynch IV was put on the IL with nerve irritation in his elbow on July 6.
The Royals are in fourth place in the AL Central and 5 1/2 games out of a wild-card spot.

ESPN ranks Broncos' under age 25 players last in the NFL

ESPN's Aaron Schatz recently ranked all 32 NFL teams based on their players under 25 years old, and the Denver Broncos came in last in the rankings. "The Broncos don't have as much talent under the age of 25 because so many of their players aged out of consideration for this list," Schatz wrote for ESPN. The team has zero "blue-chip players" under 25, at least in Schatz's estimation. Denver's list of players under 25 years old includes All-Pro receiver/returner Marvin Mims, rookie cornerback Jahdae Barron, running back RJ Harvey, pass rusher Jonah Elliss, defensive lineman Sai'vion Jones, running back Jaleel McLaughlin, receiver Pat Bryant, running back Audric Estime and linebacker Levelle Bailey. The players that are 25 years old and therefore ineligible include star cornerback Pat Surtain, quarterback Bo Nix, pass rusher Nik Bonitto, safety Talanoa Hufanga and cornerback Riley Moss. The team's players just over 25 include guard Quinn Meinerz (26) and running back J.K. Dobbins (26). Players like Surtain, Nix, Bonitto and Meinerz aging out of eligibility apparently made the team's ranking dip as the Broncos were ranked 26th last year. Dan Quinn on Micah Parsons: 'I'll be connected with him for life'

Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons has made no secret his love for Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn. Quinn was in his first season as the defensive coordinator for the Cowboys when Dallas selected Parsons with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. It was Quinn who realized that Parsons would be best employed as an edge defender, and Parsons quickly proved him correct. As a rookie, Parsons finished with 13 sacks and 20 tackles for loss, won the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award, and was named first-team All-Pro. In 2022, Parsons was again named first-team All-Pro and was second-team All-Pro in 2023. After the 2023 season, Quinn departed to become the head coach of one of Dallas' primary levels. Parsons spoke of his appreciation for Quinn every chance he got. Well, in case you haven't heard, Parsons requested a trade from the Cowboys on Friday. He and the team are at odds over a new contract, as Parsons felt Dallas misled him. Owner/GM Jerry Jones has stated he will not trade Parsons, and the goal remains to sign him to a long-term deal. This weekend, Bleacher Report was in Ashburn for a training camp practice, and, of course, Quinn was asked about Parsons. "Yeah, I loved coaching him, I really did, and I'll be connected with him for life," Quinn said. "He had the versatility to do different things, so he challenged me as a coach. What if we line him up here? What if I put him here? And sometimes I would be like, 'That didn't look so good.' Another time, 'We got something.' So he pushed me as a coach to think differently, and it allowed us to be more versatile. I had an absolute blast coaching him." Quinn has to be careful in discussing Parsons, but his affinity for his former player is apparent. Parsons revealed last season that he and Quinn still communicate. What does this mean? Absolutely nothing. Quinn would do anything to acquire Parsons, but do you think that Jerry Jones would trade Parsons to Washington? First, the Cowboys aren't trading their best player. Secondly, if they did, it would not be to Washington, Philadelphia, or the New York Giants. How to watch Fever vs. Storm: Indiana looks to extend its winning streak without Caitlin Clark

Seattle's hardwood hosts a marquee matinee Sunday at 3 p.m. ET when the red-hot Indiana Fever visit the Storm. Rebounds ricochet and WNBA stars deliver shimmer, sizzle and scoreboard-skipping suspense for hoopheads. Live coverage is also available on ESPN+. Even while second-year guard Caitlin Clark remains out with a right groin strain, Indiana (16-12) is riding a four-game surge. Clark's absence has forced a democratic bend: The Fever are 8-7 without her, behind Aliyah Boston's 54.4 percent shooting and Kelsey Mitchell's 19.9 points a night. In an 88-78 win over the Dallas Wings on Friday night, Boston recorded her fifth straight double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds) and Mitchell put up a game-high 23 points. Seattle (16-12) counters with 2016 MVP Nneka Ogwumike (18.1 points per game), who shined in a double-OT loss to her former team, the Los Angeles Sparks. Ogwumike crossed the 7,000-point threshold with her 37-point outing on Friday, becoming just the sixth player in WNBA history to reach that career milestone. The Storm also rely on center Ezi Magbegor's rim protection and a rejuvenated Skylar Diggins, whose All-Star Game triple-double was followed by another in just 23 minutes against the Connecticut Sun on July 28. Indiana claimed the lone prior meeting between these two teams, 94-86 on June 24, when Boston erupted for a career-high 31 in this same arena. Both clubs play around the same pace, so rebounding and turnovers loom large. If Boston limits Ogwumike's second-chance looks and Mitchell stays tidy under pressure, the Fever could secure their first five-game win streak of the season. Advertisement Seattle has a tough stretch ahead before its Aug. 15 meeting with the Atlanta Dream in Vancouver, the first WNBA regular-season game held outside the United States. The Storm have the Minnesota Lynx, Las Vegas Aces and Sparks on tap before back-to-back showdowns against the Dream.
