Red crusader and the last of CPM's founders: Ex-CM of Kerala VS Achuthanandan dies at 101
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A singular chapter of
Kerala
's red history turned its last page Monday. Former CM Velikkakathu Sankaran Achuthanandan - firebrand Marxist,
CPM
's founding member, and Kerala's conscience-keeper - died aged 101 in a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram at 3.20pm after 28 days on life support.
VS, as he was known across political aisles, was hospitalised after a heart attack on June 23. Trusted comrades stayed by his side to the end. Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan rushed in for a final glimpse. Funeral will be held Wednesday evening in Alappuzha. Public homage begins Monday evening at AKG Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, continues Tuesday at Secretariat Durbar Hall, and concludes at Alappuzha Town Hall.
Born on Oct 20, 1923, in Alappuzha to Velikkakathu Sankaran and Akkamma, he lost his mother at four and father at 11.
Hunger cut short school at Class 7. The "chovan" (Ezhava) boy faced casteist jeers, but his resolve only hardened. At 21, he was organising Kuttanad farm workers. By 1940, he joined Communist Party. Jail, underground life, resistance - his early life reads like Kerala's own left-wing chronicle.
Achuthanandan became CPM state secretary (1980-92), was elected to the assembly four times, and led the state as CM from 2006 to 2011 - the first working-class communist in India to do so.
He twice served as opposition leader, and his loss at Mararikulam in 1996 polls shocked even his critics.
His brand of politics was not of quiet obedience. He challenged CPM brass, openly taking on party honchos he dubbed "crafty revisionists". His feud with Pinarayi cost him a politburo seat. Yet he never broke from the party.
He led anti-corruption crusades, exposed sex scandals involving ministers and film stars, and sent former minister R Balakrishna Pillai to jail. A green activist before the phrase existed, he battled land grab and paddy reclamation. Even in his 90s, he hired a tutor to learn Hindi after being named administrative reforms panel chief. Supporters called him the soul of CPM. With his passing, the last of the founding reds was gone.

CPM accuses Union govt of neglecting working class, favouring corporates
Mysuru: CPM state executive secretary U Basavaraj on Sunday accused the Union govt of adopting pro-corporate friendly policies, neglecting the interests of farmers, labourers, and other working-class people in the nation. The Union govt is giving a red carpet welcome to corporate houses, while the common people were affected by inflation and the rise in prices of essential commodities, he stated. He was addressing a rally organised by the district unit of CPM at Gandhi Square in the city. He said that even though the Union govt mobilised over Rs 50 lakh crore revenue every year from the states, with Karnataka contributing Rs 4 lakh crore in the form of tax, the Union govt has failed to protect the interest of the working class to curb inflation. He accused the Union govt of giving a red carpet welcome to corporate houses to loot the forest and mining resources of the nation when the common people were affected by inflation. Basavaraj also stated that even though the Union govt is distributing free ration to the poor under the public distribution system to over 80 crore people, people are dying from hunger. India ranked 105th in the Global Hunger Index, he stated, adding that still 45%t of the population are unemployed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pune: Unsold Furniture Liquidation 2024 (Prices May Surprise You) Unsold Furniture | Search Ads Learn More Undo The income gap between the rich and poor has increased at an alarming rate every year. District CPM secretary Jagadeesh Soorya urged the govt to strengthen govt-run institutions, schools, and public sector banks, besides initiating measures to prevent farmer suicides, and to open govt-run engineering, law colleges, and Mohalla clinics.

Bihar SIR ‘Exercise in Exclusion', Says Opposition INDIA Bloc
Politics Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, the opposition said that the EC must abandon its 'institutional arrogance' and roll back the SIR. New Delhi: The opposition INDIA bloc on Sunday (July 27) called the Election Commission (EC)'s ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar an 'exercise in exclusion', demanding that the poll body give up its 'institutional arrogance' and stop the exercise. 'This is an exercise in exclusion. In the whole month, you could not find a single person who had to be included? There are different categories of exclusion, but it is highly surprising that they did not come across a single person who is eligible for inclusion,' said Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya while addressing a press conference in New Delhi. 'Between the summary revision which was conducted in January 2025 and July 2025 SIR, are we to believe that 22 lakh people have died in the last six months?' According to the EC's figures released on Sunday, a total of 65 lakh people have been found to be deceased, permanently shifted or not found, and another seven lakh were found to have registered in multiple places. The commission said that 7.24 crore enumeration forms have been collected at the end of its month-long exercise, which amounts to 91.69% of the total electors in the state. The press conference was addressed by Bhattacharya, Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Manoj Kumar Jha, Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi and the Communist Party of India (Marxist)'s Nilotpal Basu. Singhvi questioned the 'institutional arrogance' of the EC and asked why the exercise could not be de-linked from the assembly elections due to be held in November. 'Please rethink your institutional arrogance. Everyone across the country is urging you to roll this back. What was the hurry to conduct this exercise just three months before the elections and link it to the elections? Why could this not be done after the elections? Many mistakes are being made because of this time limit,' he said. Singhvi said that amid questions being raised that the exercise was not one for the purification of electoral rolls but a citizenship verification drive, the EC has now made its stated objective clear. 'Earlier it was not clear, but now it is absolutely clear that this is a citizenship verification exercise by the EC. The Supreme Court's suggestion is as good as an order. If one is to accept the EC's argument that Aadhaar, ration card and EPIC card cannot be accepted, then that only means you want a proof of citizenship. That means your stated objective is to determine citizenship,' he said. Earlier this week, the EC in its affidavit in the Supreme Court said it has the authority to seek proof of citizenship and also turned down the court's suggestion that Aadhaar, voter identity and ration cards be considered as valid documents in its controversial exercise, which has been criticised for its risk of mass disenfranchisement and exclusion. 'Because you have said citizenship cannot be determined by ration card, voter ID card or Aadhaar card. So the question arises, has this right been given to the EC?' said Singhvi. Jha said that the exercise was started without consulting political parties, while 'opacity had become a hallmark' of the EC's functioning. 'When the chief election commissioner [Gyanesh Kumar] took over, he had said emphatically that none of his decisions would be taken without consulting political parties. I think in the last 22 years, there has been no bigger decision than this, but no political party was consulted. On June 24 the exercise was announced and on June 25 it was started," he said. Jha said that reports had shown booth-level officers filling out forms or sitting at a party office and signing forms, as well as instances of forms not being filled duly. 'This is a form of constitutional fraud. If my form can be filled without my sign or fingerprint and submitted, and on the basis of this you call it a cleaning exercise, then sorry to say, opacity has become a hallmark of the functioning of the EC,' he said. The opposition parties demanded that the exercise be stopped, with time still in hand. The Supreme Court meanwhile is slated to continue hearing the petitions challenging the exercise on Monday (July 28). Kamra questions privilege notice: ‘Can't be used as shield against embarrassment'
Mumbai: Asserting that his remarks on deputy CM Eknath Shinde didn't interfere with the functioning of the state legislature, standup comic Kunal Kamra has said the notice on the breach of privilege motion moved against him appears to be mala fide and motivated. A breach of privilege motion is not meant to shield legislature members from the embarrassment or discomfort caused by a citizen's legitimate exercise of his freedom of speech, regardless of what position they occupy in the executive, he said in his reply to the notice. He said Shinde can't be equated to or conflated with the entire Vidhan Sabha. Legislature officials said state law department authorities are in agreement and have cited various Supreme Court orders to say that a breach of privilege motion can sustain only if a person's act restricts a legislator from discharging his/her legislative duties. Officials said they had recommended against admitting the motion, but legislative council chairperson Ram Shinde eventually decided to do so and send it to the privileges committee to initiate proceedings.
