Margate police net three in drug crackdown
Margate police continue to crackdown on the local drug trade after two people were arrested in the Nositha area of Margate on Monday this week. Police searched an identified residence where a 27-year-old man was arrested for possession and dealing in drugs. A further search uncovered a Norinco pistol and five live rounds of ammunition. The man also faces charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Saps Ugu District Communication and Liaison said the firearm will undergo ballistic testing to determine if it has been used in the commission of other crimes. While at the property, alert officers from the Margate Drug Task Team noticed another man approaching. After searching him, police recovered six mandrax tablets and 20 heroin capsules, and the man, also aged 27, was arrested for possession and dealing in drugs. Both men are expected to appear in the Port Shepstone Magistrate's Court shortly. In a separate operation on July 23, police acted on information at a residence in Matsheketsheni, Gcilima, believed to be linked to drug dealing. After conducting surveillance, police arrested a 37-year-old man who was found with heroin capsules, mandrax tablets, ziplock bags of crystal meth, and ziplock bags of powder cocaine. He appeared in court on charges of possession and dealing in drugs, and the matter was postponed to October 29. Murder suspect arrested after chase ends in collision
A 39-year-old suspect, wanted for a November 2024 murder in Florida, Gauteng, was arrested on Thursday after a high-speed police chase ended in a multi-vehicle collision at the London Road off-ramp near Alex Mall, injuring four people and disrupting traffic in the area. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) revealed that that the suspect is also linked to nine additional cases, including eight robberies and a murder in various Johannesburg suburbs. Read more: Alleged robbers arrested after high-speed chase and shootout in Marlboro They further explained that the suspect fled when Hawks attempted to stop his vehicle while executing a bench warrant, an arrest warrant issued by the court for failing to appear as required for the November 2024 murder. 'When they tried to pull the vehicle over,' the Hawks statement read, 'the suspect's vehicle accelerated. A high-speed chase ensued.' The suspect was pursued by a multi-disciplinary law enforcement team comprising of the Hawks' Gauteng Serious Organised Crime Investigation's tracing team and SAPS Counter Intelligence, among others. 'At the intersection of the London Road off-ramp, the suspect's VW Polo collided with a Mazda, as well as Hyundai bakkie,' the Hawks' statement added. Hawks further shared that the suspect's passenger is also a person of interest. However, it did not divulge any information about the passenger's connection to any crime or investigation. The collision prompted the closure of London Road, from Alex Mall towards the N3, with law enforcement officials managing the scene. A subsequent search of the suspect's residence, by other law enforcement officials, led to the recovery of an unlicensed 9mm firearm and two vehicles, a blue VW and a blue Renault, linked to cases in Germiston and Sandton. Hawks said the suspect will appear in court soon, and the investigation continues. Follow us on our Whatsapp channel, Facebook, X, Instagram, and TikTok for the latest updates and inspiration!
