Trompies on lighting up the stage, new album and more
The group is preparing to release a new EP in August. More than 30 years since their debut, kwaito legends Trompies are still the life of the party, and they have no plans to slow down. The iconic group had fans on their feet at the Imbawula Music Festival in Pretoria this past weekend, delivering a high-energy set packed with their classic hits. The group consists of Eugene Mthethwa, Mandla Mofokeng (aka Spikiri), Jairus Nkwe (aka Jakarumba), and Mahoota. Speaking to The Citizen, group member Eugene Mthethwa said the response from the crowd showed the lasting impact of their music. 'There are people from the '90s and 2000s, all singing our songs word for word. It means our music is immortal. 'We didn't do this because we couldn't finish school. We chose music because it's our gift. We take our craft seriously. When we perform, it's not just a rendition — it's a real performance. That's what has kept us going all these years,' he said. It'll be out in about three weeks. We're done recording, we're just finalising mixing and mastering,' said Spikiri. Formed in 1994, Trompies have been together for more than 30 years. Jairus Nkwe said he is thankful the group has stayed together for so long and cherishes their brotherhood. 'I'm grateful to God that we're still together, still spreading joy. I'm excited about the new EP. I also want to see whether exploitation in the industry still exists, because I believe God loves us all.' Mthethwa added that they plan to release the new music gradually. 'These days, you don't drop a full album all at once,' he explained. 'We'll release one or two tracks at a time to test the market and give fans a chance to connect with each song.' ‘I am appalled by the recent so-called apology issued' — Nonn Botha on Open Chats Podcast
Botha, who identifies as a coloured person, said Open Chats Podcast should be cancelled because of their insensitivity. Seasoned broadcaster Nonn Botha has added her voice to the growing call for the Open Chats Podcast to be cancelled following derogatory comments made on the podcast about coloured people. 'I am appalled by the recent so-called apology issued by the Open Chats Podcast. It was a pathetic and insulting attempt to brush over vile, deeply offensive comments made about the coloured community,' said Botha, telling The Citizen. Open Podcast's 128th episode caused outrage after they insinuated that coloured people practice incest and that they are 'crazy'. Following the uproar from political parties, civil society and the general public, the Open Podcast released a statement apologising. 'We would like to clarify that Open Chats Podcast does not promote or support racism or discrimination, as seen in previous episodes, we have had a wide range of guests on the show, including our coloured community in numerous episodes,' read the podcast's statement. The platform sought legal advice from Snail Attorneys, who also released a statement of apology on the podcast's behalf. Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie said the comments were racist and said he was planning on taking legal action against the podcast. On Thursday morning, the ANC and the EFF had also released statements rebuking the comments. 'I was saying it as a joke. You can tell that I'm joking, said Mtho. 'Bra, it was the first time that I saw a reel that had coloured comments,' Mtho said about the outrage they faced. 'I think you guys always say things that are out of pocket [out of line/insensitive] all the time,' said one of the girls who co-hosts the show. Aldrin Sampear reveals new job after road rage incident
Aldrin Sampear has announced his decision to leave Newzroom Afrika in favour of joining the Department of Tourism. This follows his public apology over a viral video of him involved in a road rage incident with a female driver. According to reports, the news broadcaster has a history of physical abuse of his ex-girlfriends. In an X post, Aldrin Sampear officially announced his departure from Newzroom Afrika. He posted: 'While this moment is about me, I want to send a warm hug to my cheerleaders who have been saddened by my exit from broadcasting. I promise to make you proud again'. Aldrin revealed he would be taking up a post as a public servant. He continued: 'I have joined the Department of Tourism under the leadership of Minister Patricia De Lille. This beautiful nation has done so much for me. I'm indebted. 'State policies like social grants and free primary healthcare helped pull me out of poverty, and journalism was the vehicle. My life is a testimony of God's love for us, and now I get to say THANK YOU in a BIG WAY and help pull more people up with me.' He said, 'I want to take full responsibility for my actions. Although I did not assault the other driver, I think that I should have been more composed and found a way to de-escalate the situation. I felt short of the standards I hold myself to. He emotionally continued: 'For that, I want to express my regret and sincere apologies to our viewers, my colleagues, and our management at Newzroom Afrika. I've worked really hard to make sense of this experience and the root cause of my response. 'I hope that through my actions from now on, to rebuild the trust and the confidence in me, and continue on this journey to do better'.
