Wales is known as the "land of castles" and has more than 600 of them to choose from for a historic day out. You can see the 29 most impressive castles in Wales here. One particular castle you should add to your bucket list is Caldicot Castle. This large stone medieval castle is in the town of Caldicot, Monmouthshire, and it became a Grade I listed building in 1953.
Founded by the Normans, developed in royal hands as a stronghold in the Middle Ages and restored as a Victorian family home, the castle has a long history dating back over 900 years and is set within 55 acres of parkland overlooking the river Nedern.
Caldicot Castle was built on a site recognised for its strategic value. The Romans used the area in the early centuries AD, when Caldicot stood on the Via Julia roadway to Caerwent.
The Normans also recognised its useful location as early as 1086, and they built a motte with two baileys and a deep surrounding ditch to control this area of south Wales. In 1221, a curtain wall and two corner towers were also added.
Over the centuries, this magnificent castle has had various owners, undergone multiple modifications and renovations, and been transformed from a defensive fortress into a sumptuous residence.
The castle was eventually purchased by the antiquarian JR Cobb in 1855. Cobb restored Caldicot to its medieval grandeur, and today, it's one of Wales' heritage treasures and a magnificent wedding venue.
Wander the castle and grounds to see a blend of medieval and Tudor styles, explore the imposing gatehouse, the great hall, and the remains of the inner bailey, which once housed the castle's inhabitants.

Anyone from the south looking for a coastal escape in the north can expect great things from Seaham. The town in County Durham has a mile-long shingle beach and on it you'll be able to collect sea glass, which is scattered along the shore. The treasure is man made glass which has ended up in the sea, where it is then shaped by the water over several years and is eventually washed up on the shore. There's more sea glass in Seaham than in other beach destinations because during the Victorian era, it had a glass bottle factory where waste was put into the sea. It's not uncommon to see dolphins jumping out of the water in Seaham either. One visitor to Seaham Beach said: "Dolphins and glass beads... what could be better?" They added: "Staying on the beach gave us a prime viewing of the pod of dolphins that swam along the coast catching fish." There's even a mole sanctuary - a designated patch of land that lets the little subterranean rodents live peacefully in the soil. How to get a free upgrade to first class on a plane Travelers often wonder how to secure an upgrade to first class without paying the premium price. According to a flight attendant, there are several strategies passengers can employ to increase their chances. Firstly, loyalty to an airline is crucial; frequent flyers and those with elite status are more likely to receive upgrades. Additionally, booking directly with the airline rather than through third-party sites can improve your odds, as can being flexible with your travel dates and times. Dressing smartly and arriving early can also make a difference. While airlines generally prioritize upgrades based on status and fare class, a well-dressed passenger who checks in early may catch the staff's attention. It's also beneficial to be polite and friendly to the airline staff, as they have the discretion to upgrade passengers at their own judgment. Lastly, if you're celebrating a special occasion, such as a honeymoon or birthday, it doesn't hurt to mention it. While not guaranteed, some flight attendants might consider this when deciding on upgrades. Overall, while there's no surefire way to get a free upgrade, combining these strategies can certainly improve your chances. Recently, the 'Maldives of Europe' also got new flights from the UK for £19.99. Plus, Skyscanner has a price drop tool that finds the cheapest flights and it could save you hundreds.
