Arne Slot provides Liverpool centre-back transfer update ahead of meeting with Marc Guehi
Arne Slot insists his Liverpool squad has plenty of options at centre-back, even if some of those players aren't specialists in the position. His comments came ahead of Sunday's Community Shield against Crystal Palace, where Marc Guehi will be able to provide a reminder of what he could offer the Reds.
Liverpool have seen two bids for Guehi rejected and - for now at least - have no plans to return with a third. However, their options at the back appear rather limited from the outside.
They have three senior specialist centre-backs - Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and the currently injured Joe Gomez. Captain Van Dijk signed a contract extension at the tail end of last season, keeping him at the club until 2027, but Konate's current deal only runs until the end of the current campaign.
During pre-season, the likes of Wataru Endo, Ryan Gravenberch and Andy Robertson have filled in at centre-back, with Slot confident of their abilities. "They can definitely play there as well and you forget Joe Gomez," the Dutchman said.
"Unfortunately he [Gomez] has a minor injury at the moment but he will be back with the team soon. I'm really happy with the players we are having and we have numerous players who can play in the position."
Those stand-in centre-backs aren't the only players able to do more than one job at Anfield. New right-back Jeremie Frimpong got minutes on the wing for old employers Bayer Leverkusen and Slot foresees him as an option there when Mohamed Salah heads off to the Africa Cup of Nations midway through the season.
"We definitely thought about AFCON. It's partly why we brought in Frimpong because he can play as a right-winger," Slot told reporters. "A maximum six games without Mo, but that's a lot in the Premier League. Jeremie can play there but he isn't the only option."
Palace captain Guehi was also looked at by Newcastle last summer, but the Magpies have moved onto other targets such as Malick Thiaw. Guehi was one of three centre-backs to start for Oliver Glasner's side in a 3-1 win over Augsburg last Friday, and is expected to be involved on Sunday.
The match will be Palace's first return to Wembley since winning the FA Cup there back in May, and Guehi's fellow centre-back Maxence Lacroix still watches the game back to relive the highs. "This type of emotion... you don't have it every day," he told club media.
"It's like time stops. I watch the game back on YouTube and when you watch it again, you're like, 'No, it's not possible. We're going to win!'"

Oliver Glasner's Crystal Palace contract is set to expire in the summer of 2026 and there is also some uncertainty over the futures of star men Eberechi Eze and Oliver Glasner Oliver Glasner has indicated Crystal Palace's transfer business will shape whether he signs a contract extension. The Austrian insists there are currently "no negotiations" over fresh terms with his existing deal set to expire in 2026. Glasner admitted the Eagles, who will learn the outcome of their Europa League appeal with CAS on Monday, have been "quite passive" in the market having only brought in backup goalkeeper Walter Benitez and left-back Borna Sosa. When asked if Palace transfer dealings - or lack of - could impact his future, he said: "We will see." The former Eintracht Frankfurt boss also refused to provide any assurances Arsenal target Eberechi Eze will be staying put. Quizzed on whether there was confidence Eze would remain with the club beyond the September 1 deadline, Glasner replied: "He will play on Sunday, definitely and Marc [Guehi] as well - he will captain the team." England international centre-back Guehi is also now into the final 12 months of his contract in south east London. Liverpool are monitoring his situation closely while Newcastle and Tottenham have previously seen bids rejected. The FA Cup-winning boss insists Guehi will ultimately decide what happens next. He explained: "Marc and me, we have the same fate but I can't speak on behalf of Marc. In the end, it's always the player's decision and Marc will decide his future. "Of course, everybody wants Marc to sign a new contract, everybody who is connected to Crystal Palace at least. Everybody wants to keep the squad together because they did so well last season. "But again, I don't know how often this happens here at Palace, keeping your top 15 to 16 players going into a new season when you've performed that well. That's also a great achievement for the club but you never know what happens in this sometimes crazy transfer market." Glasner is hoping for two new additions, a defender and forward after striker Eddie Nketiah was ruled out for up to three months with a hamstring injury. The striker will miss two months of action while he works on his recovery but Glasner feels he'll also need four extra weeks to get up to speed with winger Matheus Franca and right-back Caleb Kporha also sidelined with fitness issued. The 50-year-old said: "It's not that I want investment, it's about Crystal Palace. My expertise and my advice is what Crystal Palace should do to be competitive in four competitions. If somebody thinks that's nonsense, okay, let's see." Glasner did, however, rule out a move for Chelsea outcast Raheem Sterling and made it clear that Palace's uncertain European future had no impact on their pursuit of transfer targets.

Paddy Pimblett provides update on Ilia Topuria fight amid UFC lightweight disarray
Paddy Pimblett has provided an update on the UFC lightweight title picture, although not necessarily a positive one as far as he is concerned. The Liverpudlian has been linked to a potential shot at champion Ilia Topuria, with whom he has had a grudge since 2022, when they were involved in an altercation in London. However, Arman Tsarukyan and Justin Gaethje are both ranked ahead of Pimblett, who is No 9 at 155lb. While Pimblett's ranking could count against him, No 2 Tsarukyan lost momentum when he withdrew from a title shot on one day's notice in January, citing injury, and No 5 Gaethje is only riding a one-fight win streak and previously lost two title fights. 'Obviously back in the gym Monday,' Pimblett said on his YouTube channel. 'All I kept getting asked this weekend was: 'Who are you fighting? When are you fighting? When are you fighting Ilia?' 'I have no idea. Hopefully it is gonna be me versus the chorizo next,' added 'Paddy The Baddy', referencing Topuria's Spanish-Georgian heritage, 'and I think that's what all the Americans want, because every American I bump into keeps saying: 'When are you gonna smash that sausage's head in?' 'I'm hoping that gets sorted, but I understand that I am ranked No 9 or something, so other people probably are more deserving. But posh boy definitely isn't; little rich boy Arman, showing how desperate he is, offering another £1m to fight [Topuria]. Spoilt, rich baby, trying to pay their way out of things.' In fact, Tsarukyan recently offered Topuria a $500,000 bet around a potential clash. 'That's why he quit when he was making weight in the bath like a little b***h,' Pimblett added, in a jibe at Tsarukyan's injury from January. 'Arman's irrelevant, no one cares about him.' Tsarukyan appears to be the front runner to challenge Topuria, who won the vacant title with a first-round knockout of Charles Oliveira in June, which could lead Pimblett to face Gaethje. However, Gaethje has played down the possibility of that match-up, suggesting he could leave the UFC if he is not awarded another title shot. 'As I always say, I've got nothing but respect for Justin,' said Pimblett, 30, 'but I keep seeing in interviews him saying he doesn't want to fight me. 'I['d] seen Dan Hooker talking s*** the other day as well. I used to like Dan Hooker, now you can eat s***. I think the only fight to make is me and Ilia.' Tsarukyan's injury in January led then-champion Islam Makhachev to fight Renato Moicano on short notice. Makhachev submitted Moicano before giving up the title in May, with an eye on challenging for the welterweight belt later this year. who was this week paired with Rafael Fiziev for an October fight. Pimblett had been loosely linked to Oliveira, but the Brazilian's match-up with Fiziev means Paddy The Baddy will likely take on Topuria, Gaethje or Tsarukyan, depending on who is paired in a title fight. After Topuria knocked out Oliveira in June, Pimblett entered the cage to face off with the champion, while Gaethje and Tsarukyan sat in the crowd at the T-Mobile Arena. However, UFC president Dana White said he did not know who authorised Pimblett to enter the Octagon in Las Vegas.
