A recent clinical study conducted in China suggests promising results for a vitamin D3-loaded nanoemulsion in improving the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children.
In the study, published on Friday by the LabMed Discovery magazine, researchers from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University explained that while traditional vitamin D3 supplementation has shown mixed results in past studies, a nanoemulsion form-engineered to enhance absorption and bioavailability- might produce better outcomes.
ASD is a neurological and developmental disorder that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave. It is characterized by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction, along with restricted or repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities.
ASD symptoms become apparent during early childhood, typically within the first three years of life.
Vitamin D3 Benefits
Vitamin D3 is a vital form of vitamin D, essential for the typical growth and development of bones and teeth and for improving resistance to certain diseases.
Recent studies suggest that Vitamin D3 may play a supporting role in neurodevelopment and behavior, particularly in children with ASD.
Vitamin D3 supplements are available as tablets or oil drops, but these forms lack advanced techniques to enhance its absorption.
Nanoemulsion Form of Vitamin D3
Therefore, the Chinese study focused on a nanoemulsion form of vitamin D3, which is specifically designed to improve how well the body absorbs and utilizes the nutrient, potentially leading to more effective outcomes.
The study involved 80 children with confirmed ASD diagnoses, all between 3 and 6 years old. The children were randomly split into two groups: one group received the nanoemulsion version of vitamin D3, while the other group was given a commonly available standard supplement.
Both groups followed their respective treatments for a six-month period.
Their vitamin D3 levels, adaptive behaviors, and language abilities were assessed before and after supplementation.
Only the nanoemulsion group showed statistically significant improvements in vitamin D3 levels, autism severity, social IQ, and both receptive and expressive language performance.
The conventional supplement, despite raising blood vitamin D3 levels, did not lead to meaningful improvements in behavioral outcomes.
The study concludes that the nanoemulsion form of vitamin D3 is superior to the conventional oral form in terms of increasing vitamin bioavailability and producing clinically relevant improvements in children with ASD.
The authors of the study suggested that nanoemulsion technology could offer a valuable strategy for enhancing the effectiveness of nutritional interventions in neurodevelopmental disorders.

George Smith, who heads up Michigan State's AgBioResearch department, called it a 21st century cattle drive. Crews erected a fence between the two buildings and herded the animals via claps, calls, and whistles. The remaining 180 cows are expected to be herded to the new building on Tuesday. Michigan's dairy industry leads the nation in milk production per cow, according to Smith, adding dairy also is the No. 1 contributor to the state's agricultural economy. The new complex is significantly larger than the existing dairy farm, which was constructed in the 1960s and was so limited in space and equipment that researchers have a backlog of up to two years on funded projects. The existing MSU Dairy Cattle Teaching and Research Center currently houses 250 dairy cattle and supports the research of faculty in the colleges of Agriculture and Natural Resources and Veterinary Medicine. The new facility features a 165,000-square-foot cattle barn that will expand research capacity by increasing herd size to 680. Those cows will arrive in batches in the coming weeks and months. The new space also includes modernized barns, feed centers, milking parlors, and labs. 'Our old facility didn't have the technical capabilities to be able to train our students for what to expect when they graduated – what dairy cattle production looks like today,' Kim Dodd, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, said Monday. The new digs are opening at a time when other land grant universities in the agricultural Midwest are scrapping their dairy cattle teaching programs. 'While other institutions are disinvesting in dairy programs, we are investing in the future of the dairy industry in the state of Michigan because it's so critical to the state's agricultural economy,' Smith said. A $30 million investment by the State of Michigan provided the initial funding for the 18-month project, with the rest being contributed by alumni, donors, and stakeholders in the dairy industry. 'Who doesn't love ice cream?' Smith said. 'Who can't get excited about new opportunities in the field of dairy science?'

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will be launching another remote-sensing satellite from a Chinese launch center next week to monitor resources and boost disaster management efforts, its space research commission SUPARCO announced on Sunday. The launch of the satellite will mark a major milestone in Pakistan's space program, significantly enhancing its Earth observation capabilities. It will support a wide range of national applications, including precision agriculture to boost crop yields, monitoring infrastructure growth and urban sprawl, and enabling regional planning, according to SUPARCO. The satellite will strengthen disaster management efforts by providing timely warnings for floods, landslides, and earthquakes, while tracking glacier recession and deforestation. In addition, it will support national development initiatives by mapping transportation networks and identifying geo-hazard risks. "The launch of this remote sensing satellite, along with its integration into Pakistan's existing remote sensing fleet — including PRSS-1 (launched in July 2018) and EO-1 (launched in January 2025) — will further strengthen the country's space-based infrastructure, aligning with the National Space Policy and SUPARCO's Vision 2047, aiming to position our nation at the forefront of space technology and innovation," SUPARCO said in a statement. The satellite, whose data acquisition capabilities under various environmental conditions make it a vital asset for environmental monitoring and resource management, will be launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center (XSLC), China on July 31. Pakistan has taken strides in its space research program in recent years months. In January this year, China launched Pakistan's indigenously developed Electro-Optical (EO-1) satellite into space from its Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, aiming to predict natural disasters and monitor resources, Chinese and Pakistani state media reported. In Nov. last year, SUPARCO announced its rover will join China's Chang'E 8 mission to explore the moon's surface in 2028. Prior to that in May 2024, Pakistan launched its first lunar satellite aboard China's Chang'e-6 probe, which was tasked with landing on the far side of the moon that perpetually faces away from the Earth. China was the first country to make such an ambitious attempt.

China's Premier Li Proposes Global AI Cooperation Organization

Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Saturday proposed establishing an organization to foster global cooperation on artificial intelligence, calling on countries to coordinate on the development and security of the fast-evolving technology. Speaking at the opening of the annual World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, Li called AI a new engine for growth but said governance is fragmented and emphasizing the need for more coordination between countries to form a globally recognized framework for AI. The three-day event brings together industry leaders and policymakers at a time of escalating technological competition between China and the United States - the world's two largest economies - with AI emerging as a key battleground. "Overall global AI governance is still fragmented. Countries have great differences particularly in terms of areas such as regulatory concepts, institutional rules," Li said. "We should strengthen coordination to form a global AI governance framework that has broad consensus as soon as possible." Washington has imposed export restrictions on advanced technology to China, including the most high-end AI chips made by companies such as Nvidia and chipmaking equipment, citing concerns that the technology could enhance China's military capabilities. Despite these restrictions, China has continued making AI breakthroughs that have drawn close scrutiny from US officials. Li did not name the United States in his speech but he warned that AI could become an "exclusive game" for a few countries and companies, adding that challenges included an insufficient supply of AI chips and restrictions on talent exchange. GOVERNANCE PLAN China wants to share its development experience and products with other countries, especially those in the Global South, Li said. Also on Saturday, China released an action plan for global AI governance, in which it invited governments, international organizations, enterprises and research institutions to work together and promote international exchanges including through a cross-border open-source community. The plan proposes accelerating digital infrastructure such as clean power, new-generation networks and data centers, according to a statement from China's foreign ministry. The AI conference is an annual government-sponsored event in Shanghai that typically attracts major industry players, government officials, researchers and investors. Saturday's speakers included Anne Bouverot, the French president's special envoy for AI, computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton, known as "the Godfather of AI", and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has in past years regularly appeared at the opening ceremony in person or by video, did not speak this year. Besides forums, the conference features exhibitions where companies demonstrate their latest innovations. This year, more than 800 companies are participating, showcasing more than 3,000 high-tech products, 40 large language models, 50 AI-powered devices and 60 intelligent robots, according to organizers. The exhibition features predominantly Chinese companies, including tech giants Huawei and Alibaba and startups such as humanoid robot maker Unitree. Western participants include Tesla, Alphabet and Amazon.
