No Evidence Of Abuse In Death Of UTM PALAPES Cadet, Says Defence Minister
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- An investigation committee has found no evidence of abuse in the death of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Reserve Officers Training Unit (PALAPES) trainee cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin, who died during training at the Army Basic Training Centre (PULADA) in Ulu Tiram, Johor, on July 28.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the committee's findings involved input from several ministries, including the Defence Ministry, Home Ministry, Health Ministry and Higher Education Ministry.
He said the incident occurred a day after the 22-year-old began his training on July 27, and all training activities were carried out according to established guidelines and procedures.
'Testimonies from more than 30 witnesses, including trainees and instructors, confirmed that the training followed the prescribed procedures, and no abuse was reported,' he told reporters after attending the Malaysian Armed Forces Education Excellence Awards ceremony here today.
From a medical perspective, Mohamed Khaled said a post-mortem conducted at Kota Tinggi Hospital, attended by military medical personnel, confirmed that all initial aid given to the trainee complied with standard operating procedures.
'The hospital report also confirmed there were no signs of injury on the body, consistent with police investigation findings. The cause of death will be determined after the full report is available, which is expected to take one to two months,' he said.
Mohamed Khaled stressed that the incident should not be linked or compared to the recent death of a student in Sabah, and assured that the ministry would extend full cooperation if there were any indications of abuse or criminal elements.
Syamsul Haris, the eldest of three siblings, was undergoing Combat Inoculation training at PULADA and was scheduled to complete his PALAPES training on Aug 2.

'This session gave me exposure to the dangers of bullying. From now on, I will be more aware, and if I detect any bullying elements, I know the appropriate actions to take. 'I can report it to the Student Representative Council (MPP) for further action, and if it is a serious case, it can be reported directly to the police,' she said. Another participant, Muhamad Haziq Ziqrie Mohamad Aziz, 18, a Foundation in Management student at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Sintok, Kedah, said the talk not only informed him about the punishments for bullying but also served as a reminder for youths to stay away from such behaviour. 'What I learned is that we should avoid jealousy or inciting our peers to bully those who are weaker. My hope is for young people to be free from bullying and gangster-like behaviour, as it has a lasting impact on victims,' he said. Perlis Connect, a one-day programme organised by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in collaboration with the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), was officiated by the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail.

Johor Regent aids MACC in Op Sohor smuggling probe
CYBERJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) confirmed receiving crucial information from Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail in its ongoing Op Sohor investigations. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki stated the Regent actively supports efforts to combat smuggling at national borders. 'His Royal Highness Tunku Mahkota Johor has been highly cooperative and wants such illegal activities stopped,' Azam told reporters after the Anti-Corruption Graduates Convention (KOMAWAR). He clarified the syndicate operates solely in the southern region, with no recent arrests made. 'If money laundering links emerge involving other beneficiaries, we will expand our probe,' Azam added. The commission is also investigating an online media firm linked to two suspects detained under Op Sohor. 'They worked for an undisclosed company, and we're examining its establishment purpose,' Azam revealed. The suspects allegedly leaked confidential data to the smuggling network. Five senior military officers were arrested earlier for colluding with syndicates to smuggle drugs and cigarettes worth RM5 million monthly. Melaka achieves 60.51% measles-rubella vaccination coverage in 12 days
MELAKA: A total of 60.51 per cent or 27,166 children in Melaka have received the Measles-Rubella Supplementary Immunisation Activity (MRSIA) vaccination since August 4. State Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem said 14,922 children were vaccinated in Melaka Tengah, 6,194 in Alor Gajah, and 6,050 in Jasin. The 10-week MRSIA campaign targets 46,500 children, with 26,500 in Melaka Tengah, 12,000 in Alor Gajah, and 8,000 in Jasin. Jasin recorded the highest vaccination rate at 77.73 per cent, followed by Melaka Tengah (58.43 per cent) and Alor Gajah (53.63 per cent). Ngwe announced this during the launch of the Melaka-level Bulan Malaysia Sihat Sejahtera (BMSS) celebration, attended by state Health director Dr. Ruzita Mustaffa. He said the vaccination coverage exceeded the initial 12-day target of 36.36 per cent. The Melaka Health Department aims to vaccinate over 95 per cent of eligible children within the campaign period. Parents are urged to ensure children aged six to 59 months, born between August 1, 2020, and January 31, 2025, receive the free supplementary vaccination. Dr. Ruzita said over 13 health programmes will run in September as part of BMSS, targeting communities and schools. Health screenings will be held at three district hospitals and clinics from September 1 to 30. The programme includes the Orang Asli community through collaborations with various agencies.
