Reports: Rays deal C Danny Jansen to Brewers, get Marlins C Nick Fortes
The Tampa Bay Rays got younger at catcher Monday, using a pair of reported trades to swap Danny Jansen out for Nick Fortes.
The Rays dealt Jansen to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for infield prospect Jadher Areinamo, MLB.com and The Athletic reported. Separately, the Rays are acquiring Fortes from the Miami Marlins for minor-league outfielder Matthew Etzel, according to multiple reports.
Jansen, 30, was in his first season in Tampa Bay after spending the first seven years of his career with American League East rivals Toronto (2018-24) and Boston (2024). Due to a 2024 Toronto-Boston game that was suspended due to rain and rescheduled, Jansen became the first player in MLB history to play for both teams in a single game.
Jansen was batting just .204 with 11 home runs and 29 RBIs in 73 appearances for the Rays.
Fortes, 28, is under club control through 2028 via three years of arbitration. He will join his second MLB club without having to leave the state.
In parts of five seasons with Miami, Fortes has batted .225 with 25 home runs and 96 RBIs over 363 games. That includes a .240 batting average with two homers and 10 RBIs in 59 games in 2025.
Areinamo, 21, is a Venezuela native who joins Tampa Bay's system after batting .297 with 11 homers and 51 RBIs over 94 games this season for High-A Wisconsin.
Etzel, 23, has spent the season at Tampa Bay's Double-A affiliate in Montgomery, where he has batted .230 with five home runs and 34 RBIs in 56 games. He has played all three outfield spots in the minor leagues.

He also won a Gold Glove as a third baseman in 2022, joining Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson (16 times) and Manny Machado (twice) as the lone members of the team to do so. Palmer, 20, posted a 2-0 record with a 2.13 ERA in 13 appearances (eight starts) with Single-A Fayetteville. The 6-foot-5 right-hander was selected by the Astros in the 19th round of the 2024 first-year player draft out of Connors State College in Oklahoma. Kittredge, 35, is 2-2 with a 3.45 ERA in 31 relief appearances this season since signing a one-year, $9 million contract in February. He is 25-14 with 16 saves and a 3.44 ERA in 286 career relief appearances (15 starts) with the Rays, St. Louis Cardinals and Orioles. De La Cruz, 17, batted .262 in 27 games in the Dominican Summer League.

Bieber has not pitched in an MLB game since April 2, 2024. He underwent Tommy John surgery after just two starts in 2024 and has been rehabbing since. In return, Cleveland will receive right-handed pitcher Khal Stephen, ranked by MLB Pipeline as the No. 5 prospect in the Blue Jays 30, threw 57 pitches on Tuesday in a rehab start for Double-A Akron. He allowed one run on three hits, including a solo home run. struck out seven and walked none. In all, he made four rehab starts, and had a 1.59 ERA in 11 1/3 innings. He gave up two runs on seven hits and a walk and struck out 21 batters. Cleveland selected Bieber in the fourth round of the 2016 MLB Draft, and he spent seven seasons with the club, earning two All-Star selections. He won the 2020 AL Cy Young Award in the pandemic-shortened season with an 8-1 record and 1.63 ERA, also winning the pitching Triple Crown. Overall, his record with Cleveland was 62-32 with a 3.22 ERA in 136 games (134 starts). He holds a $16 million player option for 2026. The 6-foot-4 Stephen, 22, was selected in the second round of the 2024 MLB Draft out of Mississippi State. He's pitched at three levels this season, most recently with Double-A New Hampshire, and is 9-1 with a 2.06 ERA in 18 games (17 starts). With 99 strikeouts and 18 walks, he has a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 5.50.

Rays vs. Yankees SGP predicitons July 31: Bet on Giancarlo Stanton, Josh Lowe in Thursday's matinee
The Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees wrap up their four-game set with a matinee in the Bronx on Thursday. The pregame narrative: New York won in extra innings last night and aims to take three of four from its AL East rival today. This matchup is a pick'em with Marcus Stroman pitching for the Yanks and Ryan Pepiot going for the Rays. Check out my Rays vs. Yankees predictions, featuring Josh Lowe and Giancarlo Stanton. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW Rays vs. Yankees predictions Parlay: Rays F5 +0.5 | Lowe over 0.5 hits | Stanton over 0.5 hits (+290) Rays F5 +0.5 (-165): Stroman is well past his prime, and he seldom gives the Yankees chances to win ballgames. The righty has a 6.09 ERA, a 1.59 WHIP and some unsightly batted ball metrics: Stroman also has a fourth-percentile K rate (14.9%) and has gotten lit up by this Rays lineup in the past, ceding a .309 batting average in 60 plate appearances.
