Hampton University air traffic professor weighs in on tragic DC crash

Yahoo31-01-2025

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) —There are no clear answers on why that Black Hawk helicopter and American Airlines Flight 5342 collided Wednesday.
The National Transportation Board won't have a preliminary report for at least 30 days, but one Hampton University professor said he expects the role of air traffic controllers to be reviewed closely.
Midair collision kills 67 people in the deadliest US air disaster in almost a quarter century
A career in air traffic control comes with duties that sometimes result in responding to tragedies like Wednesday's deadly plane crash near Reagan National Airport.
'Our job as the air traffic controller is protect the airspace that the planes are flying in,' said Timothy Johnson, Hampton University assistant professor and AT-CTI program manager.
Hampton University has an air traffic controller degree program. Johnson started his career in 2003 and knows it's a fast paced environment.
'Making air traffic hard in general is just dealing with different types of aircrafts, different characteristics that the aircrafts do,' Johnson said. 'Aircrafts fly at different speeds depending on what they are dealing with, with multiple aircrafts and not a lot of airspace, and aircrafts can't stop in midair, right? So they're going to be flying constantly.'
Johnson said it is common to see military helicopters training at night near civilian airports, and air traffic controllers are used to communicating to pilots for both aircrafts.
President Donald Trump weighed in on the crash at a press conference Thursday morning, with comments on diversity, equity and inclusion and its alleged relation to the event.
At the press conference, a reporter asked the president if there's a reason to think diversity had something to do with this crash. President Trump responded in part by saying, 'I have common sense, we want brilliant people doing this.'
Johnson said all air traffic controllers are equipped to do the duties they are assigned.
'Becoming an air traffic controller, it's intense training,' Johnson said.
Controllers have to do schooling at a certified university like Hampton, and then you have an additional two to four years of training at various facilities before being allowed to work on your own. There have been questions, though, surrounding staffing levels for that tower at DCA during last night's crash.
This investigation into the cause of the crash could take many months to conclude.

El Paso mayor: Planned protests need to be peaceful

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — With demonstrations scheduled all over the country on Saturday, June 14, Mayor Renard Johnson is urging El Pasoans who plan to rally to 'protest peacefully and make their voice heard.' More than 1,800 communities are expected to host 'No Kings' rallies and protests to counter a military parade and birthday celebration for President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C. This also comes in the shadow of the protests that have been going in Los Angeles. The Trump Administration has sent 4,000 National Guard and 700 Marines to counter the protests which have seen some sporadic violence. 'I encourage El Pasoans to come together in a spirit of nonviolence, mutual respect, and shared purpose.' Johnson said. Here is Johnson's statement in its entirety: 'As your mayor, I want to speak directly to the people of El Paso ahead of the demonstrations expected this Saturday. 'We honor the constitutional right of every individual to protest peacefully and make their voice heard. In this moment of heightened emotion across the country and in our own city, I encourage El Pasoans to come together in a spirit of nonviolence, mutual respect, and shared purpose. 'El Paso has long been a city defined by unity and resilience. Let's continue to lead by example — showing that even in times of concern or disagreement, we can gather peacefully to express our values and our hopes for the future. 'In coordination with El Paso Police Chief Pacillas, we have developed a comprehensive public safety plan to ensure that demonstrations are conducted safely and lawfully. The El Paso Police Department remains steadfast in its mission to protect both public safety and the First Amendment rights of all participants. 'I ask all participants to look out for one another and to demonstrate peacefully. El Paso is stronger when we come together — and this weekend, we have the opportunity to show that strength once again.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Trump's busy weekend: Military parade, G7 summit, & more

It's a big weekend for President Trump: On Saturday, the US military parade will celebrate the US Army's 250th anniversary, coinciding with Flag Day and President Trump's 79th birthday. This Sunday, the G7 summit will begin in Canada. Yahoo Finance Senior Reporter Jennifer Schonberger joins Market Domination Overtime with Julie Hyman to discuss the details. To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Market Domination Overtime here. The US Army is marking its 250th anniversary Saturday with a day-long festival and parade that happens to be coinciding with President Donald Trump's 79th birthday. Yahoo finances Jennifer Schonberger back with us for what to expect in DC this weekend. What's this going to look like, Jen? Yeah, that's right, Julie. The US Army will mark its 250th birthday complete with a military parade, one that we haven't seen in decades, which as you said, coincides with not only the president's 79th birthday, but also Flag Day. The parade expected to be a spectacle complete with vintage military vehicles, weapons and flyovers, will tell the story of the army starting with the Revolutionary War and conclude with the future of the army. The procession kicks off at 6:30 p.m. down Constitution Avenue featuring 150 vehicles from tanks used during the Gulf War to a Black Hawk helicopter and 6700 soldiers in uniforms. Republican and Democratic lawmakers have fretted over the cost, which the Pentagon reportedly has said could reach $45 million. Now, the parade will conclude with President Trump's remark remarks and a Golden Knights parachute display, but while this parade rolls through the streets of Washington, 1900 protests across all 50 states are expected and what's being called the No Kings movement, protesters are seeking to reject what they call authoritarianism and billionaire first politics. Right-wing supporters of President Trump are expected to protest those protests, so we could see some clashing across the country on that tomorrow. And if you are wondering why the US Army is marking its birthday right now as opposed to next year when the US turns 250. Well, it turns out that the US Army was actually founded on June 14th, 1755, so just over a year before the Declaration of Independence was signed, a little bit of history there for you. Yeah, right? Uh interesting fact trivia, historical trivia. Love it. Um, uh, and then the day after the parade on Sunday, the president will be heading to Canada for a group of seven meeting. Um, obviously we know that past relations with Canada in particular had been tense. What should we be looking for there? Yeah, that's right, Julie. On Monday, the president's set to meet with his colleagues in the G7 where they're expected to talk about top security and economic issues. According to a senior White House official, discussions are expected to include those on trade, the global economy, critical minerals, migrant and drug smuggling, wildfires, international security, artificial intelligence and energy security. The president said to be eager to discuss trade relationships and making those fair and reciprocal while also opening up new export markets for the US. He also wants to try to make or position the US to be a leader in artificial intelligence. Jen, thanks so much. Appreciate it.

Longtime Newport News treasurer files as an Independent

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Longtime Newport News Treasurer Marty Eubank will seek re-election as an independent. Eubank filed paperwork and qualified with the Department of Voter Registration in May. For nearly three decades, Eubank has served as the Newport News treasurer. In March 2025, Eubank shared exclusively with WAVY-TV 10 that he would not seek re-election. Previous: Longtime Newport News treasurer will not seek reelection; 3 candidates enter race 'I did not have a change of heart. I have worked for the city for 41 years. I've been the longest-serving treasurer of 28 years for Newport News. I'm very proud of that. I very much looked forward to retiring this year,' he said. 'I did everything I could to position myself to run in this campaign for one more term. But after I met Sanu Dieng-Cooper, I talked to her and realized what a perfect candidate she would be to be my successor, which is something I've been looking for the past few years! She impressed me with her ideas, her vision, her knowledge of the office already, and her understanding of what it does. I realized she'd be the perfect candidate to win the Democratic primary. That's when I decided to bow out of the primary. I fully support Sanu. I 100% still endorse being the next Treasurer of Newport News. I'm confident that the voters will see how qualified she is. They will support and vote for her on June 17.' Your Local Election Headquarters on The Newport News Department of Voter Registration confirms that Sanu Dieng-Cooper and Derek Reason are the Democratic candidates for the June primary. There are no Republican candidates. Justin Kennedy, an independent candidate for treasurer, will appear on the November 4th ballot. Eubank told 10 On Your Side he filed as an independent following the 2025 NAACP Newport News Candidate Forum on April 30. 'I am confident she [Sanu] will win the Primary. But you can't predict an election, and that 1% off chance that Sanu might not win. Then I position myself to come back into the general election,' said Eubank. 'After watching the NAACP forum and listening to both sides, I was in the audience. I became concerned that Sanu Cooper has to be elected as our next treasurer. She has to!' Eubank also received a Freedom of Information (FOIA) request regarding the legitimacy of one of the candidates' businesses. WAVY-TV 10 received an independent copy of the FOIA from the Newport News Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue, which states the business in question 'does not hold a City of Newport News business license, as such a license is not required for the type of activity this business performs. The USDOT number associated with this business is currently listed as inactive in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) database. The business's status with the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) is also listed as inactive per SCC records.' asked Eubank about 'integrity' following the recent filing. 'I'm doing it for the right reason, not the wrong reason. I'm not going back on my word. I still fully support Sanu. I fully expect her to win. She has my 100% endorsement. Come June 17, I will be by her side celebrating. But I am trying only to position myself [just] in case. Elections can be unpredictable in the event that 1% off the chance the Sanu is not elected. I will be here to protect this office,' said Eubank. Eubank urges residents to watch the candidate interviews and forum to 'judge for yourself.' 'I have always been a Democrat. I will always be a Democrat. I view myself at this point as an Independent-Democrat, but I'm doing what I have to do. I'm doing this for the right reasons. For the citizens of Newport News,' he said.
