"Would brighten future of those in darkness": Uttar Pradesh Dy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya welcomes decision to conduct 16th population census
Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], June 17 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Tuesday welcomed the Centre's decision to conduct the 16th population census and stated that it would 'brighten the future of those in darkness.'
'I welcome the census and caste census notification issued by the Government of India yesterday...I believe that this will brighten the future of those whose future was in darkness...' Maurya said, speaking to reporters.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Pawan Khera questioned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on why there was no mention of caste in the survey and further stated that the BJP was always opposed to socio-economic survey of different castes and that the intentions of BJP would always be suspected.
'So, the socio-economic survey is being done on every caste group. This is the real intent, which can be seen through this GO. In the Government of India notification of yesterday, where is the word 'caste'? Where have they written a socio-economic survey of caste groups? They haven't. This also shows that since the BJP has always been opposed to socio-economic surveys of different castes, we suspect their intentions always. These questions will be raised on the BJP because their intentions were always suspect,' Khera told ANI.
Mocking BJP over no mentions of the word 'caste' in the Census, Khera said 'They don't even dare to mention the word 'caste' in their notification for the Census and they are pointing fingers at a party which has not just done it very successfully in Telangana, which is also following it up and is now ensuring that the Telangana model is followed even in Karnataka,' he said.
Applauding the Telangana government's model of Census, Khera stated that the same model was expected to be followed by the Government of India.
'Every single resident of Telangana was involved, and therefore, the report is quite accurate. Based on that report, the Government of Telangana has already taken appropriate steps in the direction of social justice and economic justice. That is a successful model, and we expect the government of India to emulate it,' he added. (ANI)

Gujarat: Bypolls In Visavadar, Kadi Assembly Constituencies To Be Held Today
Ahmedabad: Bypolls to the Visavadar and Kadi assembly seats in Gujarat will be held on Thursday, where the BJP, Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have put up their candidates. Votes will be counted on June 23. Eligible voters will be allowed to cast their ballots between 7 am and 8 pm, election officials said on Wednesday. The state government has declared a public holiday in both constituencies on the voting day, said the office of Gujarat's Chief Electoral Officer. It said votes would be cast through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at 294 polling stations in each constituency. The Visavadar seat in Junagadh district has been lying vacant since December 2023, after the then AAP legislator Bhupendra Bhayani resigned and joined the ruling BJP. While the BJP has nominated Kirit Patel for the bypoll in Visavadar, Congress has fielded Nitin Ranpariya. AAP's former Gujarat president Gopal Italia is also in the fray. Despite its near-total dominance in the state, the BJP hasn't won the Vasavadar seat since 2007. Party leaders said they are hopeful of overcoming the 18-year jinx here. In the last assembly election in 2022, AAP's Bhupendra Bhayani had defeated BJP's Harshad Ribadiya, a Congress turncoat and former MLA, by 7,063 votes. The Kadi seat in Mehsana district, a constituency reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates, has been lying vacant since February 4, following the death of BJP MLA Karsan Solanki. The BJP has fielded Rajendra Chavda from Kadi, while Congress has given the ticket to Ramesh Chavda, a former MLA. Ramesh Chavda had won the seat in 2012, but lost it to BJP's Karsanbhai Solanki in 2017. TMC, CPI(M) seek booster in Bengal, Kerala; BJP, AAP look to retain Gujarat, Punjab seats
ON THURSDAY, five Assembly seats across four states will vote in bypolls. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the CPI(M) are looking at the bypolls in West Bengal and Kerala, where they are in power respectively, as precursors to the Assembly polls slated next year in their states. The BJP wants to retain its old bastion in Gujarat, but it is also hoping to clinch another seat where the AAP is steadily growing. In Punjab, the ruling AAP is facing a challenge from not only the Congress but also the BJP. Results are out on June 23. Nilambur (Kerala) The bypoll here was necessitated by the resignation of the CPI(M)-backed Independent legislator P V Anvar. The Congress, which lost the seat in 2021 by 2,700 votes, has mounted a stiff challenge, nominating old-timer Aryadan Shoukath. CM Pinarayi Vijayan has handpicked M Swaraj as the CPM candidate. Kaliganj (West Bengal) In the 2021 Assembly polls, TMC leader Nasiruddin Ahmed won Kaliganj by 46,987 votes against the BJP's Abhijit Ghosh. It was Ahmed's second win from the seat. Ahmed died in February this year after a cardiac arrest. His daughter Alifa Ahmed is now contesting the bypoll on the TMC's ticket. She is taking on the BJP's Ashish Ghosh and the Congress's Kabil Uddin. The campaigns have been charged. The BJP has targeted the TMC over the Murshidabad riots. And the TMC has accused the BJP of communal polarisation. Visavadar (Gujarat) Visvadar in Gujarat's Junagadh district fell vacant after sitting AAP MLA Bhupendra Bhayani joined the ruling BJP. Bhayani is not contesting the seat, with the BJP having fielded Kirit Patel, a cooperative leader and a former district party president. The AAP has fielded Gopal Italia, one of the faces of the Patidar agitation in the state. Kadi (Gujarat) In the 2022 polls, the BJP's Karsanbhai Punjabhai Solanki won 53.45% of the total votes. The Congress came second. The SC-reserved seat fell vacant after Solanki died in February. The BJP has fielded Rajendra Kumar Daneshwar Chavda,while the Congress has nominated Rameshbhai Chavda. The AAP has fielded Jagdishbhai Ganpatbhai Chavda here. Ludhiana West (Punjab) This bypoll was necessitated by the death of AAP's Gurpreet Bassi Gogi. It has fielded industrialist and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora. AAP top brass, including Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, have campaigned. The Congress has fielded Bharat Bhushan Ashu and seems to be getting traction.
