Srinagar: MBBS students shoots video of op theatre, labour room, GMC orders probe
The authorities at Government Medical College (GMC) , Srinagar, have ordered a probe after a video allegedly recorded by a final year medical student inside the operation theatre and labour room of Kashmir's Lalla Ded hospital became viral on social media. The GMC, Srinagar, which is the administrative authority of the Lalla Ded hospital, has framed a committee to enquire the issue. Following the incident, Jammu and Kashmir Medical Council (JKMC) has issued guidelines to doctors on professional conduct over social media. The GMC, Srinagar, which is the administrative authority of the Lalla Ded hospital, has framed a committee to enquire the issue. 'An enquiry committee constituted to investigate a video circulated on social media regarding Lalla Ded Hospital, Srinagar. The Committee with medical and IT experts will submit a report within 24 hours. Appropriate disciplinary action to follow,' the GMC said on X in a post on Wednesday night. In the video, the young doctor can be heard saying: 'We went to the labour room, there was nothing, so we are going to the OT'. Moments later the video reveals a surgical procedure on a patient. He then goes on to say: 'Our patient's first delivery has taken place'. Jammu & Kashmir Medical Council has issued a slew of guidelines for doctors' professional conduct on social media. 'Online presence must reflect medical ethics, truthfulness, and respect to the profession, patients, colleagues and the community. Be cautious and share content responsibly and avoid posting material that could harm professional credibility,' it stated. The council cautioned that any breach of these guidelines will be treated as a violation of the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002, and may result in disciplinary actions, including suspension of registration by the Jammu & Kashmir Medical Council.

Remote centres outside Kerala force candidates to drop out of NEET-PG
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM/KOCHI: With just two days remaining for the National Eligibility Entrance Test-Postgraduate (NEET-PG), on August 3, many medical graduates are shocked to get examination centres outside the state — in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Many candidates had carefully chosen cities near their residences as preferred centres during the application process. However, many were stunned to be assigned locations hundreds of kilometres away. 'I'm not appearing for the exam this time. I've been allotted a centre in Telangana, and I'm eight months pregnant. The travel and stay costs are too high for me and my family,' said Dr Kavitha (name changed), a candidate from Thiruvananthapuram. 'Other young mothers in my batch are opting out too. We've paid Rs 4,000 for the application, and now we're forced to abandon the attempt.' Surveys conducted by several junior doctor associations revealed that approximately 1,000 applicants from Kerala were given centres outside the state. The uncertainty over exact venue details — only disclosed two days prior to the exam on July 31 — adds to the logistical nightmare. 'If I had received Kollam as my centre, I could reach anywhere nearby without issues. But with a location like Visakhapatnam, I don't even know how close the centre will be to a hotel. How do we plan ahead?' said Dr Ashik Basheer, state president of the General Practitioners Association. Candidates have also voiced concerns over inflated travel and accommodation prices.

Health dept proposes to increase MBBS seats at GMC from 200 to 250
Porvorim: The directorate of health services has proposed to increase the number of MBBS seats at the GMC from the current 200 to 250, said health minister Vishwajit Rane on Thursday. He also said govt is working on a proposal to set up a nursing college at the South Goa District Hospital. Rane said that the two initiatives, if implemented, will create new opportunities for Goan youth in the healthcare sector. He was speaking in the legislative assembly during the discussion for demand for grants for the healthcare sector, including the GMC. The minister also said govt plans to constitute an expert committee headed by the chief minister comprising specialist doctors who can provide advice on policies for the healthcare sector, emergency medicine protocols and casualty management. 'We are suggesting a dedicated command centre for the 108 ambulance service. We have close to 100 ambulances. We want to create a dedicated fleet of ambulances for VIP movement,' the inister said. Stating that cancer is growing at a 'galloping pace' in Goa, Rane said the state cancer institute's tie-up with the Tata Memorial Hospital will provide Goans with better treatment options at a much more affordable rates.
