Daughter inspires Tamil Nadu mother to chase old dream at 49, crack NEET together
Clearing the NEET UG exam is no small feat. But doing it as a mother-daughter duo? That's something else. In Tamil Nadu, 49-year-old Amuthavalli Manivannan and her daughter Samyuktha both cracked NEET 2024, proving that age really is just a number when you're chasing a a physiotherapist by profession, had once hoped to study MBBS but couldn't back in the day. Now, three decades later, her ambition found a second wind — thanks to her daughter's ambition was rekindled after I saw my daughter prepare for NEET. She was my greatest inspiration,' she said, smiling. Samyuktha, a CBSE student, had enrolled in coaching and studied hard — her books became her mother's too. She scored 450 marks in NEET 2024 and is eyeing a seat in the general or SC quota, preferably outside Tamil scored 147 marks and has now secured a seat in the government medical college in Virudhunagar under the PwBD category. On July 30, she attended the counselling for special categories — including children of ex-servicemen, PwD, and government school students.'I found the syllabus very different from my time. But with her help, I studied,' she Samyuktha wants to chart her own path and not share a college with her mother, she remains the biggest reason her mum is finally pursuing the dream she once had to give up.'My husband was very supportive. Woman, daughter crack NEET in TN, mother secures seat in govt college, girl awaits journey
In a rare coincidence and sheer determination as well, a 49-year-old physiotherapist and her daughter from Tamil Nadu cleared the NEET together. While the woman has secured a seat in the government medical college close to her home district, the girl is set to commence her journey. Amuthavalli Manivannan found the syllabus very tough and totally different from her school days. Nevertheless, inspired by her daughter's preparation for the national level screening test, she began her preparation. 'My ambition was rekindled after I saw my daughter prepare for NEET. She was my greatest inspiration. I borrowed her books and prepared for the exam,' a jubilant Amuthavalli said. On July 30, when the counselling for TN medical admission began, Amuthavalli, accompanied by her daughter, attended the counselling here under the Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwD) category, and preferred to join the government medical college in Virudhunagar, close to her native Tenkasi. She had to pursue physiotherapy instead. Speaking to reporters, Samyuktha said, 'I don't want to study in the same college with my mother. I wish to compete in the general quota and study elsewhere, maybe outside the state.' She obtained 450 marks in NEET. She can also compete in the SC quota, her mother told reporters. 'My husband was very supportive. He encouraged us to study for NEET,' Amuthavalli added. The selection committee under the Directorate of Medical Education and Research conducted offline counselling for 7.5 per cent reservation for government school students, special category, PwD, children of ex-servicemen and eminent sports persons on July 30.

49-year-old mom secures seat on day one of TN medical admission counselling, daughter awaits her turn
CHENNAI: With age no bar to sit for NEET, Amuthavalli Manivannan, 49-year-old mother of a girl who is also aspiring to become a doctor, secured an MBBS seat in a government college under the reservation for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwD) on day one of the medical admissions counselling that began in Chennai on July 30. A physiotherapist by profession, Amuthavalli, who had scored 147 marks in NEET, secured a seat in Government Medical College in Virudhunagar, close to her native district of Tenkasi. Her daughter, M Samyuktha, whose preparation for NEET inspired her mother to attempt the exam this year, is awaiting the general round of MBBS counselling to commence.
