Kitten litter found by city litter pickers
The tiny creatures were discovered abandoned and alone on a path near Peterborough's Embankment area on Thursday by Peterborough Litter Wombles.
The group immediately called a local cat rescue charity which came along to collect them.
The charity said the kittens were in good health and were being cared for by fosterers before they would be rehomed.
The Wombles group had been clearing litter from Bishops Road to the Embankment in the city when they came across the kittens.
Group member Harry Machin said it was "certainly the most unusual litter we have found for quite a while".
The kittens - four of which were grey and white, and two of which were black - had probably not been in the box very long, a spokesperson from the cat charity said.
Food had been left in the box and there were no signs of flies or excrement, or evidence the kittens had been trying to claw their way out.
The healthy kittens will be placed for adoption when they are old enough, the charity said.

Firefighters respond again to blaze at closed-down Sandown hotel
Emergency teams have once again been called to a derelict Isle of Wight hotel following a fire in Sandown this afternoon (Saturday, August 9). Firefighters were called to the former Parkbury Hotel on Broadway following reports of smoke emerging from a boarded-up window. Crews from Ryde and Newport fire stations responded at around 4.20pm, after Hampshire and IW Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) received multiple calls from concerned members of the public. The fire, which was found in a ground-floor bedroom of the once-popular hotel, was swiftly tackled by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus. This is the latest in a series of incidents that have seen emergency services respond to the site. In July 2022, a major fire at the property required six fire crews, including two water carriers and an aerial ladder platform. Less than a year later, in April 2023, another blaze – this time in an outbuilding – was treated as arson by investigators. Once a thriving hospitality venue, the Parkbury Hotel was known as a jewel in Sandown's tourism offer, operating successfully for decades before closing its doors in 2018. The building has since fallen into disrepair and has become a repeated concern for Sandown residents and emergency services alike. HIWFRS has not indicated whether an investigation will be launched.

Residents rehomed after major water leak at 17-storey building in Coventry
Residents affected by a major Coventry water leakage have been temporarily rehomed. Mercia House at Lower Precinct had to be evacuated after flooding yesterday (August 8). Firefighters were called to the 17-storey building just before 10.50am. Crews from Foleshill, Binley, and Solihull worked to isolate the supply and stem the flow of water into the evening. Citizen Housing, which manages Mercia House, said the leakage was caused by a sprinkler system in the building. National Grid was called as the electricity supply had to be turned off while the issue was resolved. Pub The Town Wall Tavern provided food and drinks to displaced residents yesterday (August 8) and said: 'We are thankful to hear all residents are safe and sound and that steps are underway to fix the issues causing the incident.' In a statement issued yesterday (August 8), West Midlands Fire Service said: 'We responded to Lower Precinct in Coventry at around 10.50am. Two fire engines and two 4x4 Brigade Response Vehicles from Foleshill, Binley, and Solihull attended, the first arriving within five minutes of being mobilised. Historic canal set to be cleared of debris by volunteers in Warrington
AN historic canal is set to be cleared of debris by volunteers in Warrington. The Sankey Canal, England's first industrial canal built in 1757, is due for a clean-up on Saturday, August 16. The Sankey Canal Restoration Society (SCRS) is organising the work party, which will take place at Sankey Bridges from 10am to 2pm. Volunteers are asked to meet at the car park by the canal, off Liverpool Road. The team will aim to clear the canal of debris and remove poor-quality self-seeded saplings to improve water flow. A litter pick will also be available for those interested. The day will focus on cutting back vegetation around the old swing bridge base and clearing coping stones. Volunteers are asked to bring food and drink, a waterproof bag and clothing, old clothes, and sturdy footwear, preferably steel toe-capped boots. The SCRS will provide gloves, safety gear, tools, and equipment. The nearest facilities for the event are at Lidl supermarket, Old Liverpool Road. All volunteers will be covered by the SCRS insurance, and team leaders are emergency first aid trained. The minimum age to be part of the work party is 18, but there are opportunities for younger children to get involved. The SCRS said: "We really appreciate your help in whatever shape or form and for however long you can spare on site."
