Homeland Security's Noem says in talks with five Republican-led states to build detention site

Indian Express12 hours ago
US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said on Saturday that she was in talks with five Republican-led states to build another detention site inspired by the 'Alligator Alcatraz' facility in Florida.
'We've had several other states that are actually using Alligator Alcatraz as a model for how they can partner with us,' Noem told a press conference in Florida.
She declined to name the states. 'Alligator Alcatraz' is a remote migrant detention center, which sits some 37 miles (60 km) from Miami in a vast subtropical wetland teeming with alligators, crocodiles and pythons.

Raj, Uddhav alliance needed to give new direction to Maharashtra: Sanjay Raut

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Sunday said it is necessary that his party chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena head Raj Thackeray form an alliance, claiming it will give a "new direction to the state". In his weekly column Rok Thok in the Sena (UBT) mouthpiece Saamana, Raut also claimed the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nothing to do with the fight for Maharashtra's unity and Marathi "asmita" (pride). "The BJP's policy is to first loot Mumbai, then make Mumbai a union territory and play game for a separate Vidarbha and finish the existence of Maharashtra," he alleged. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bargain Prices on Unsold Container Houses in National Capital Region - Check Them Out! If the unity of Thackeray cousins and their leadership does not remain intact, then Mumbai will be swallowed by "Adani-Lodha" and one day it will not be part of Maharashtra, the Rajya Sabha member alleged. Live Events In April, MNS leader Raj Thackeray sparked speculation about a potential political rapprochement with his cousin Uddhav Thackeray, noting their past differences were "trivial" and uniting for the greater good of "Marathi manoos" (Marathi people) is not a difficult task. The buzz strengthened when Uddhav Thackeray said he was ready to put aside trivial fights provided that those working against Maharashtra's interests will not be entertained, a veiled reference to Raj hosting Shiv Sena head and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde at his residence. On July 5, Uddhav Thackeray said he and his cousin Raj Thackeray have "come together to stay together", while sharing the political stage with the MNS chief for the first time in almost 20 years, after the BJP-led state government withdrew two GRs on the introduction of Hindi language for students from Class 1. Raut claimed the coming together of cousins Raj and Uddhav on July 5 gave confidence to 'Marathi manoos'. "This does not mean all issues of Marathi manoos have been resolved. The issues troubling the Marathi manoos remain as it is. Thackeray brothers came together against the imposition of Hindi but the political alliance (between the two parties) is yet to be announced. It is necessary that there is an alliance. Only then Maharashtra will get a new direction," he said. If anyone has an illusion that Thackerays will succumb to any kind of pressure, then they are fools, he asserted. Raut claimed the unity of Thackeray brothers has rattled the rulers in Delhi and in Maharashtra, a reference to the BJP. CM Fadnavis heats up the political atmosphere by meeting Raj, the Sena (UBT) leader said, adding the MNS president will speak on this and clear the confusion. Fadnavis and Raj Thackeray had met at a hotel in Mumbai last month. Raut said 'Marathi manoos' must first fight a battle for Mumbai and Thane, an oblique reference to retaining power in the civic bodies of the two neighbouring cities the polls for which are likely to be held later this year.

TVK Vijay slams CM Stalin, BJP in first-ever political protest over custodial deaths

CHENNAI: Taking part in a public demonstration for the first time since his plunge into politics, TVK founder and actor Vijay on Sunday targeted DMK president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin over the alleged custodial deaths that have occurred during his four-year rule. Criticising Stalin for referring the investigation into the death of Ajithkumar, a temple security guard in Madappuram in Sivaganga district, to the CBI, the TVK leader charged Stalin with taking shelter behind the BJP-led Union government. Hitting out at the BJP, Vijay said, 'The CBI continues to be a puppet in the hands of the RSS and the BJP. Why are you hiding yourselves behind them by ordering a CBI probe into Ajithkumar's death?' Taking a dig at Stalin, who said 'sorry' to the family of Ajithkumar, Vijay asked, 'You said sorry to Ajithkumar's family. Nothing wrong with that. But under your four-year rule, 24 persons have lost their lives while in police custody. Did you say 'sorry' to those families? Did you grant compensation to them? Please say 'sorry' to them too and announce compensation.'

Jeffrey Epstein case: Elon Musk targets Donald Trump again; asks US president to 'release the files as promised'

Elon Musk and Donald Trump (File photo) Reacting to Donald Trump 's long Truth Social post on the Jeffrey Epstein case, the US president's estranged ally, billionaire Elon Musk , on Sunday demanded that the MAGA leader "release the files as promised." Replying to an X user's post on Trump's Truth Social rant, Musk wrote, "He said 'Epstein' half a dozen times while telling everyone to stop talking about Epstein. Just release the files as promised." Elon Musk X post Musk's remark comes days after the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) closed their investigation into the death of the convicted sex offender, concluding that he was not murdered. The two agencies also denied the existence of the disgraced financier's "client list" - the so-called "Epstein Files" - which allegedly names Trump, among others. Trump and Musk have been feuding publicly following their split, which was triggered by the latter's opposition to the former's "big, beautiful bill." Epstein's brother makes explosive claim The Republican has consistently denied allegations that he was named in the files or had any direct connection to Epstein, despite being seen in at least one decades-old video alongside the late financier at a party. On the other hand, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO is among those who allege that the real estate baron is named in the files. According to the US media, Dan Bongino, an influential right-wing podcast host whom Trump appointed FBI deputy director, has threatened to resign over the administration's handling of the issue.
