TVK Vijay slams CM Stalin, BJP in first-ever political protest over custodial deaths
Criticising Stalin for referring the investigation into the death of Ajithkumar, a temple security guard in Madappuram in Sivaganga district, to the CBI, the TVK leader charged Stalin with taking shelter behind the BJP-led Union government.
Hitting out at the BJP, Vijay said, 'The CBI continues to be a puppet in the hands of the RSS and the BJP. Why are you hiding yourselves behind them by ordering a CBI probe into Ajithkumar's death?'
Taking a dig at Stalin, who said 'sorry' to the family of Ajithkumar, Vijay asked, 'You said sorry to Ajithkumar's family. Nothing wrong with that. But under your four-year rule, 24 persons have lost their lives while in police custody. Did you say 'sorry' to those families? Did you grant compensation to them? Please say 'sorry' to them too and announce compensation.'

Jai Hind Camp residents are living in ‘subhuman' conditions: TMC MPs
A delegation of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs on Sunday visited the Jai Hind Camp in Vasant Kunj, south Delhi, home to Bengali-speaking migrants mostly from West Bengal's Cooch Behar, days after power supply was discontinued in the area on the directions of the Delhi High Court. The delegation, comprising Rajya Sabha members Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Sagarika Ghose and Saket Gokhale, said the slum dwellers told them that they have been living without electricity for the last five to six days. 'We found that there are hundreds of families from Cooch Behar that have been living here for the past 20-25 years. The majority of them work as rag-pickers, and they are being asked to move as the private owners of the land want them out. We will send a detailed report to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee,' said Mr. Roy. The TMC MP appealed to political parties and social organisations to help the residents of the camp, whom he said were living in 'subhuman conditions'. 'Just because they are Bengali-speaking, they are being targeted by the authorities and subject to inhuman actions. We must find some place for them to live,' he said. Accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of being 'anti-Bengali', Ms. Banerjee, last week, in a post on X, said, 'There are over 1.5 crore migrant workers in Bengal who live with dignity. But the same cannot be said for BJP-ruled States, where Bengalis are being treated as infiltrators in their own country. Speaking Bengali does not make one a Bangladeshi. They are as much citizens of India as anyone else, regardless of what language they speak.' The police had conducted a verification drive in the area last year, following Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena's orders.

Mamata Banerjee to lead Kolkata protest on July 16 over migrant harassment row
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will lead a TMC procession in Kolkata on July 16 to protest against the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking migrants outside the state, a minister said on Sunday. TMC leaders, workers, and supporters from Howrah, Bhangar, Dum Dum, and Salt Lake will participate in the rally.(HT Photo) The two-km march will begin from College Square in the northern part of the city around 1 pm on Wednesday and culminate at Dorina Crossing in central Kolkata, state finance minister Chandrima Bhattacharya said. "Trinamool Congress leaders, workers, and supporters from Howrah, Bhangar, Dum Dum, and Salt Lake will participate in the rally to protest against the incidents of harassment against Bengali-speaking people in BJP-ruled states," Bhattacharya said. Allegations have been made that Bengali residents in several BJP-ruled states were facing discrimination, stoppage of supplies of essential services like water and electricity and threats of the NRC implementation even after proper identities were provided. BJP leader and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar described this as "TMC's ploy to play the 'Bengali card' as the ruling party wants to divert the attention of the common people ahead of elections". "The TMC plays with Bengali sentiment when they need to divert attention from something, or the election is nearing. But this time it will not be that easy to befool the Bengalis because they have understood its tricks," Majumdar claimed.

Maratha leader's face blackened over name of his organisation, cops to take action
Workers of the Pune-based Shivadharma Foundation blackened the face of Maratha leader Pravin Gaikwad, who is the state president of Sambhaji Brigade, in Akkalkot area of Solapur district of on Sunday. The Shivdharma Foundation had been protesting against the name of the organisation Sambhaji Brigade, claiming that it insulted the legendary ruler known for his sacrifices, and wanted it to be renamed 'Dharmaveer Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Brigade'. The incident happened when Gaikwad reached Akkalkot for an award distribution function of Fattesingh Shikshan Sanstha and Sakal Maratha Samaj on Sunday. He was suddenly mobbed by members of the Shivdharma Foundation led by BJP worker and Hindutva activist Deepak Sitaram Kate around 4 pm. They allegedly poured black oil on Gaikwad's head, blackened his face and also manhandled him. Supporters of Kate and Gaikwad clashed with each other at the spot. Videos of the incident had surfaced on social media. Sub-Division Police Officer (Akkalkot) Vilas Yamavar said, 'An FIR is being lodged as per the complaint filed by a Sambhaji Brigade office bearer. Further investigation is on. Police responded within a few minutes after the incident was reported and controlled the situation.' Gaikwad blamed the state government for the attack and claimed that it was a part of 'big conspiracy' to kill him. Calling it an attack on his ideology, Gaikwad compared the attackers with the killers of rationalist Dr Narendra Dabholkar, communist leader Govind Pansare and journalist Gauri Lankesh. 'I am alive because of Sambhaji Brigade activists,' he said. Gaikwad said he would not condemn the attack, but mentioning Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who holds the Home portfolio, he raised suspicion on why police were not deployed at the function for which he had come to Akkalkot. 'There is a threat to the 'purogami (progressive)' people in the state,' he said. Gaikwad told mediapersons that he had earlier held talks Kate, regarding the demand to change the 'Sambhaji Brigade' should be changed. 'There was a technical difficulty in changing the name because one Sachin Kamble of Mumbai had already registered a separate group with the name Chhatrapati Sambhaji Brigade,' he said. The Sambhaji Brigade, issued a press statement condemning the attack and outfit claimed that 'BJP goon' Kate had been giving open threats for the last few months, but still the government did not act against him. 'We believe in the law, does not mean we would tolerate injustice….We would give a tit for tat reply….,' it stated in the press release. In January this year, Deepak Kate was arrested by the Pune city police after bullets and magazines were seized from him at the Pune International Airport. Sources said Kate had campaigned for the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), during the Assembly elections last year. Who is Pravin Gaikwad? Pravin Gaikwad is a prominent Maratha face in the state. His organisation Sambhaji Brigade came to limelight after it vandalised the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Organisation (BORI) in Pune 2004, claiming that objectionable content on Shivaji Maharaj in the book by foreign author James Laine was provided by BORI researchers. In January 2017, some members of Sambhaji Brigade had also vandalised a bust of Marathi playwright Ram Ganesh Gadkari at the Sambhaji Park in Pune claiming that in his 1918 play Raj Sanyas, Gadkari had portrayed Chhatrapati Sambhaji in a bad light. In 2017, Gaikwad had joined the Peasants and Workers Party (PWP). However, in March 2019, Gaikwad joined the Congress, hoping to get a ticket for contesting the then Loksabha elections from Pune. But the Congress party fielded another candidate from Pune constituency.
