Spinal Tap keyboardist David Kaff, aka Viv Savage, dies 'peacefully in his sleep', aged 79
The musician and occasional actor "passed away peacefully in his sleep" on Friday, according to his band Mutual of Alameda's Wild Kingdom.
"We are devastated by this event," the band wrote on Facebook.
Comedian and Spinal Tap lead singer Michael McKean also paid tribute to Kaff, posting a simple "RIP Dave Kaff" on X.
Kaff, born David Kaffinetti, was cast in This Is Spinal Tap after previously reaching the charts in Britain with prog rock group Rare Bird, whose 1970 single Sympathy featured him prominently on the organ.
He played the fictional band's hard-partying keyboardist to perfection, delivering only a handful of lines but making each one instantly memorable, such as his spaced-out assertion of his personal philosophy — "Have a good time, all the time" — during the closing credits.
After performing with the rest of the band on Saturday Night Live following the movie's release, Kaff didn't rejoin principal stars and co-writers McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer in future iterations of Spinal Tap. Instead, he played in smaller groups on America's west coast, such as Oakland's Model Citizenz, over the decades that followed.
However, he remained proud of his association with the group, telling BAM magazine in 1991 that he regularly received fan mail addressed to his character.
"I have a great affection for Viv," he said.
"I played him very close to my heart, just a little bit dimmer."
A sequel to This Is Spinal Tap, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, has been completed and is scheduled for release in September.
Kaff is not believed to have been involved in the film.

First hilarious look at movie sequel fans have waited 40 years for
'Tis the year for long, long-awaited comedy sequels. With the next instalment in the Naked Gun franchise about to hit cinemas – 31 years after the last film in the series came out – now comes a film fans have waited even longer for: A sequel to the 1985 comedy classic This Is Spinal Tap. The first trailer for Spinal Tap II: The End Continues was released today - check it out in the video player above. The original musical spoof pioneered the mockumentary genre, starring Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer as members of the titular hard rock act. It was the first outing in a genre Guest would master, with follow-up mockumentaries like Waiting For Guffman, Best In Show and A Mighty Wind considered some of the funniest films of all time. This new sequel reunites the trio with director Rob Reiner, and sees the members of Spinal Tap team up again for one final concert. As the trailer reveals, all three have fallen on hard times: Nigel Tufnel plays tiny pub gigs, David St. Hubbins is the least-convincing member of a Mexican mariachi band and Derek Smalls has resorted to hawking cryptocurrency online. As the trio prepare to reunite for one last show, one young PR hack has a suggestion to get them maximum publicity: Would one – or preferably two – members of the band be prepared to die mid-show? That would really g enerate some press. The new film also boasts celeb cameos from the likes of Elton John, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks, Questlove, and more. While the original film wasn't a huge box office success upon release – grossing $US5.8m in America against a $US2m budget – it became one of the best-loved (and most oft-quoted) comedy films in modern cinema.

Jessica Simpson suffers wardrobe malfunction during live TV performance
Jessica Simpson appeared to suffer a wardrobe malfunction during her performance on the US Today show, as the singer's corset-style dress slipped down, revealing her bra. While on the stage at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City, the top left part of Simpson's pale pink lace-up frock – which was adorned with feathers on the skirt – fell below the singer's blush-coloured lingerie. Fortunately, Simpson's long, wavy blonde hair and metallic fringe jacket kept her covered up during the accidental peekaboo moment. The fashion mogul styled her statement-making look with an oversized cross necklace and chunky silver rings. Despite the wardrobe malfunction, it's safe to say Simpson's performance this morning went better than her recent appearance on American Idol, which marked her first time on stage in 15 years. In May, she sang her hit These Boots Are Made for Walkin' alongside the ABC series' former contestant Josh King, and it didn't go particularly well, as many called it a 'train wreck.' Simpson, who wore a plunging silver metallic maxi dress, addressed the backlash a few days later, admitting that she was 'dying' during the performance. 'I can't even tell you how long it's been since I've been that nervous,' she told Extra. 'Like, I had to put hairspray on my feet to stand still, like, not that it actually keeps me put, but, like, my feet were sweating. I'm like, 'My feet don't sweat,'' Simpson confessed. In March, the mother of three returned to the music scene after a 15-year hiatus, dropping her EP Nashville Canyon, Part 1, with the second part slated to come out on September 5.

BBC to air latest Masterchef UK series featuring Gregg Wallace, John Torode
The BBC has decided to broadcast the latest season of Masterchef UK, despite it featuring sacked hosts Gregg Wallace and John Torode. In a statement, a spokesperson for the broadcaster said it had made the decision to air the latest series on its flagship channel and streaming platform "after careful consideration and consultation with the contestants". "This has not been an easy decision in the circumstances and we appreciate not everyone will agree with it." Mr Wallace and MrTorode, who had presented the show since 2005, were sacked after a review into complaints made against Mr Wallace. The report upheld 45 of the 83 complaints against Mr Wallace, including that he had used inappropriate sexual language and humour, had been in a state of undress, and in one instance had made unwelcome physical contact. While he apologised for "inappropriate" humour and language, the prominent British television personality also said he had been cleared of the "the serious allegations" against him. The report also upheld a complaint against Mr Torode that he had made a racist comment while working on the program seven years ago. Mr Torode said he had "absolutely no recollection" of making the comment and added that he did "not believe it that it happened". The Masterchef saga has reignited debate around the BBC's handling of misconduct cases. In its statement on Wednesday local time, the public broadcaster's spokesperson added that "broadcasting this series is the right thing to do" for the contestants. "We want them to be properly recognised and give the audience the choice to watch the series." It added that no decision had been made on whether to air a Christmas special and celebrity series which were filmed earlier this year. "In showing the series, which was filmed last year, it in no way diminishes our view of the seriousness of the upheld findings against both presenters," the BBC spokesperson said. The amateur series will air from August 6 on the BBC's primary domestic channel, BBC One, as well as its iPlayer service. 'Most importantly MasterChef is a brilliant, much-loved program which is bigger than any one individual," the spokesperson said. "There are many talented, dedicated and hard-working people who make the show what it is. It will continue to flourish on the BBC and we look forward to it returning stronger than ever in the future."
